Yes—your TV can limit a soundbar. The restriction usually comes from the TV’s HDMI port (ARC versus eARC), the audio formats it passes from its apps and HDMI inputs, or a digital-audio setting that converts the signal. The soundbar cannot decode a format that the source, TV, cable path, or connection never delivers. To find the real limit, check the exact TV, soundbar and source specifications together, then configure the labeled ARC/eARC ports and output settings.
What actually determines the sound your soundbar receives
A soundbar’s advertised decoding features describe what it can process—not what every television will send it. The delivered signal is the result of five links:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Source: a streaming app, Blu-ray player, game console or set-top box chooses an audio track and output format.
- TV input or internal app: the television may decode, convert or pass through that signal.
- TV output connection: HDMI eARC, HDMI ARC, optical or another output has its own capabilities.
- Cable and settings: the port, cable specification, HDMI-CEC and digital-output mode must allow the intended transfer.
- Soundbar decoder: the bar must support the format that finally arrives.
Any weaker link becomes the practical ceiling. A premium soundbar cannot recreate Dolby TrueHD, DTS:X or multichannel PCM after a TV has converted the signal to stereo or a compressed format.

Manufacturers describe capabilities at the feature level, but implementation is model-specific. Sony’s eARC explanation notes that the enhanced channel travels over HDMI to a receiver or soundbar, while its pass-through format guide lists only the formats supported by a particular TV family. Treat the exact manual and specification sheet as authoritative for your model.

ARC versus eARC: the port difference that matters most
| Connection | Typical capability described by manufacturers | What to verify on your models |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI ARC | Compressed 5.1 audio is commonly supported. | Whether the TV passes Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS or Atmos from each source; whether the bar accepts those formats. |
| HDMI eARC | Higher bandwidth; manufacturers list uncompressed 5.1/7.1 and formats such as Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD. | The exact TV pass-through list, soundbar decoding list and source output mode. |
| Optical (TOSLINK) | An alternative digital connection. | The equipment manuals. There is no universal optical codec matrix established across all models. |
| No ARC/eARC output | The TV cannot return TV-app audio over HDMI to the bar. | Whether optical, a source connected directly to the soundbar, or another documented input path meets your needs. |
Samsung’s comparison describes ARC as supporting compressed 5.1, while eARC adds uncompressed 5.1/7.1 and high-bitrate object-based audio. Sony describes eARC as offering up to 37 Mb/s of data-transfer bandwidth. Those are capability descriptions, not a promise that every eARC television passes every listed codec.
Both ends must support eARC
eARC only operates at eARC capability when the television and soundbar both support it. Sony explicitly states that an ARC-only soundbar connected to an eARC TV remains limited to ARC specifications. An eARC TV does not upgrade an ARC soundbar, and an eARC soundbar cannot obtain eARC bandwidth from an ARC-only television.
Labels are not enough
Use the HDMI socket physically labeled ARC or eARC/ARC. Not every HDMI input on a television carries return audio, and some models reserve eARC for one specific port. Sony’s connection guidance also warns that port availability and supported formats can vary by model, region and country.

Why Dolby Atmos or lossless audio may still fail
The source may not be sending that format
A service can offer several audio tracks, and a player can be set to PCM, bitstream or a device-specific mode. If the source selects stereo PCM or a compressed fallback, an eARC connection cannot restore the original object-based or lossless track. Check the title’s audio information and the source device’s audio-output setting before blaming the TV.
The TV may decode or convert instead of pass through
TVs differ in what they forward from internal apps and HDMI inputs. A model may pass Dolby Digital Plus from a streaming app but not pass a format arriving at another HDMI input; another may convert multichannel PCM to a lower-channel output. Sony’s model-specific pass-through table is an example of why a generic “supports Atmos” badge is insufficient.
The soundbar may support only some Atmos paths
Atmos can be carried in different underlying formats. A bar might decode Dolby Digital Plus Atmos from a TV app but require a direct HDMI input for Dolby TrueHD Atmos from a disc player. Read the bar’s input and decoder specifications, not just the word “Atmos” on the box.

Settings and ports to check
Menu names differ by brand, software version and region, but the required choices are consistent.
- Use the correct HDMI socket. Connect the bar to the TV port labeled ARC or eARC/ARC. Select the bar’s TV, HDMI ARC or eARC input mode as its manual specifies.
- Select the external audio system. In the TV’s sound-output menu, choose the HDMI audio system or receiver instead of TV speakers.
- Enable eARC where available. On compatible equipment, turn on eARC in the TV and soundbar menus. Leaving one side in ARC or Auto-only mode can prevent the higher-bandwidth path.
- Set digital output deliberately. Samsung documents Digital Output Audio Format choices such as Auto and Pass-Through, plus PCM. If the bar does not support the selected format, Samsung advises trying PCM, Auto or Pass-Through; the available labels vary by model.
- Check HDMI-CEC/control. HDMI-CEC may be required for the TV to recognize and control an audio system. The feature has different names by manufacturer, so consult both manuals.
- Use the cable specified by the manuals. Sony recommends a High-Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet for eARC data transfer. A cable cannot add eARC to an ARC port, but an unsuitable or damaged cable can prevent a supported link from working.
For a model-specific example of the connection sequence, see Sony’s BRAVIA, soundbar and input-device HDMI guide. Sony’s general audio-system connection guide shows the same port-and-output principles.

- Is the TV port ARC, eARC, or neither?
- Which codecs does the TV pass from internal apps?
- Which codecs does it pass from each HDMI input?
- Does the soundbar decode the desired codec through its TV-return input, or only through a direct HDMI input?
- What output mode does the source use: PCM, bitstream, Auto or another label?
- What HDMI cable type does each manufacturer require?
Record “not stated” when a manual does not specify a value. Do not infer pass-through from a logo or from another model in the same product range.
Use the source’s audio indicator
Many bars show the incoming mode—such as PCM, Dolby Digital, Dolby Atmos or DTS—on their display or mobile control panel. If the indicator changes when you switch a TV setting, you have identified a pass-through or conversion point. The indicator proves what the bar receives, not what the source originally contained, so compare it with the source’s track information.

If the television is ARC-only but the soundbar has an HDMI input, connect a capable source—such as a disc player or streaming box—directly to the soundbar. Sony documents this as a way to deliver a higher-quality format such as Dolby Atmos without relying on the TV’s eARC return channel.

- Connect the source’s HDMI output to the soundbar’s HDMI input.
- Connect the soundbar’s HDMI output to the TV’s HDMI input.
- Select the soundbar’s source input and set the source to a compatible bitstream or Auto mode.
- Confirm that the bar reports the intended format.
This workaround has two conditions. First, the source and soundbar must support the format. Second, the soundbar must pass the source’s video resolution, HDR mode and refresh rate to the TV. If it cannot pass the video signal you need, connect video directly to the TV and use the TV’s supported audio-return path instead, accepting its format ceiling.
Optical: useful fallback, but not a universal answer
Optical is a documented alternative in Sony’s audio-system guidance and can restore basic digital audio when HDMI ARC is unavailable or unreliable. However, the manufacturer material does not establish one codec limit that applies to every optical output and soundbar. Check both manuals for channel count, Dolby/DTS support and whether TV apps are allowed to output those formats over optical.
Optical also lacks HDMI’s return-channel control features. You may need to switch the bar’s input manually, and volume or power control may not behave like HDMI-CEC. Choose it because your specific manuals confirm the required format, not because optical is automatically equivalent to ARC or eARC.
Troubleshooting: diagnose the bottleneck in order
No sound at all
- Move the cable to the TV socket labeled ARC or eARC/ARC.
- Set the TV’s output to the external audio system and the bar to its TV/ARC input.
- Enable HDMI-CEC and eARC if the equipment requires them.
- Power-cycle the TV, bar and source after changing the connection.
- Test PCM as the digital output. If PCM works, the previous format was unsupported or not being passed correctly.
Sound works, but it is stereo or the bar shows PCM
- Check that the source is not forced to stereo PCM.
- Try Auto or Pass-Through on the TV’s digital-output menu.
- Verify that the TV passes multichannel audio from that particular HDMI input or internal app.
- Confirm the title actually offers a multichannel track and that the bar can decode it.
Atmos or another format is missing
- Confirm eARC support on both TV and bar; an ARC-only endpoint imposes ARC limits.
- Check whether the TV passes the exact Atmos variant from the source.
- For a high-bandwidth source, test a direct source-to-soundbar HDMI connection.
- Check the soundbar’s on-screen or front-panel incoming-format display.
Intermittent dropouts or handshake errors
- Replace the cable with the High-Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet type recommended for eARC.
- Remove intermediate switches or receivers temporarily.
- Update device firmware if the manufacturers document an applicable fix.
- Reconnect in this order: TV and bar powered off, HDMI attached to the labeled ports, TV powered on, then bar and source.
Does eARC automatically sound better?
No. eARC increases the formats and bandwidth the connection can carry; it does not improve every soundtrack by itself. You hear a difference only when the source provides a higher-quality or more-channel track, the TV passes it unchanged, and the soundbar and speakers can reproduce it. With a stereo stream, a compressed 5.1 track or a bar that cannot decode the additional format, eARC may add compatibility without changing audible quality.
Conversely, an ARC system can sound excellent when its source uses a format ARC supports and the TV passes it correctly. The practical benefit of eARC is headroom and fewer format compromises, not a guaranteed percentage increase in loudness, detail or immersion.
A quick decision guide
| Your equipment | Most sensible path |
|---|---|
| eARC TV + eARC soundbar | Use the labeled eARC port, a compliant HDMI cable, eARC enabled, and Pass-Through or Auto as supported. |
| eARC TV + ARC-only soundbar | Use ARC; the system remains limited to ARC specifications. |
| ARC-only TV + eARC soundbar | Use ARC for TV-app audio, or connect a high-bandwidth source directly to the bar’s HDMI input if video pass-through is suitable. |
| No ARC/eARC TV + optical-capable bar | Use optical only after both manuals confirm the required formats and control behavior. |
| Unknown format support | Find the exact model guides, map each source and input, and use the bar’s incoming-format display to verify the result. |
The shortest reliable rule is: match the TV port, TV pass-through list, source output and soundbar decoder as one system. A label on any single device is not proof that the complete chain supports the format you want.
