A Thunderbolt 5 dock can deliver its advertised maximum only when the computer, host port, cable, dock, connected devices, and workload all support the relevant capability. Start by checking the computer’s exact port and the cable, then simplify your display setup and compare it with the dock maker’s compatibility details. A dock cannot upgrade a slower host connection.
What “full speed” means for Thunderbolt 5
Thunderbolt 5 supports up to 80 Gbps in each direction in its balanced mode. For video-intensive use, Bandwidth Boost can rebalance the link to provide up to 120 Gbps of transmit bandwidth and 40 Gbps of receive bandwidth. The 120 Gbps figure is therefore neither a symmetric transfer rate nor a guarantee that every workload or downstream dock port will run at that speed. Intel’s 2023 announcement describes the 80 Gbps bidirectional bandwidth and up to 120 Gbps for display use; its Thunderbolt 5 Technology Brief explains the transmit-side rebalancing.

The number you see in practice depends on the entire connection path: the computer’s host port and platform, cable, dock, attached device, and what is using the link. Displays, storage, and other high-bandwidth peripherals share the available connection rather than each independently receiving the host link’s headline maximum.
Why a Thunderbolt 5 dock can be slower than expected
The computer’s host port is the limiting link
A Thunderbolt 5 dock connected to a Thunderbolt 4 host does not turn the host connection into Thunderbolt 5. The link is constrained by what the computer and the specific port support. USB-C is only a connector shape; it does not establish which protocol or speed a port supports. Check the exact computer model’s technical specifications and identify the port you are using rather than relying on the dock’s label or the port’s appearance. Intel’s Thunderbolt 5 bandwidth guidance and the dock manufacturer’s compatibility details can help clarify supported configurations.
#1 Best Overall
- 20 Ports of Extreme Connectivity - The TS5 Plus includes 3x 80Gb/s Thunderbolt 5 ports, 5x USB-A 10Gb/s ports, 5x USB-C 10Gb/s ports, DisplayPort 2.1, SD 4.0 & microSD 4.0 UHS-II card readers, 10Gb Ethernet, and 3 x audio ports.
- More Power than Ever - The TS5 Plus host charging port provides up to 140W of dedicated power delivery, ideal for laptops such as the 16” M3/M4/M5 Pro & Max series MacBook Pro that charge at 140W. The included 330W power supply allows sustained power delivery at all times from the host charging port as well as all of the remaining ports. The downstream Thunderbolt 5 ports and one of the front USB-C ports can provide up to 36W of dedicated power delivery for accessories.
- Flexible Display Configurations - The TS5 Plus on macOS devices can connect up to Dual 6K 60Hz displays, or even Dual 8K 60Hz displays on Macs that support those resolutions. Up to Triple 6K 60Hz displays are supported on M5 Pro & Max only. Up to Quad 6K 60Hz displays are supported on M5 Max only. Windows users please check your PC’s supported display compatibility.
- 10 Gigabit Ethernet - 10GbE is 10X faster than traditional 1GbE found on the majority of docking stations. Connect to ultra fast 10GbE networks in order to transfer files faster than ever, or connect to 10GbE equipped NAS storage devices. *Ethernet is only supported on Thunderbolt based hosts as well as USB4 hosts that support PCIe.
- Dual USB Controllers - A unique feature of the TS5 Plus is that it includes Dual USB Controllers. This means that the ports on the front of the dock have one 10Gb/s USB controller for all of the attached devices, and the rear ports have a second 10Gb/s controller for the devices on the back ports. This avoids any bottlenecks when multiple high speed USB devices are connected.
Display modes use different amounts of bandwidth
Display bandwidth varies with resolution, refresh rate, and color depth. For a multi-stream transport (MST) setup, consider the combined demand of all display signals, not just one monitor’s mode. Intel’s example figures put 4K UHD at 60 Hz with standard 8-bit color at 12.54 Gbps and 4K UHD at 120 Hz at 25.82 Gbps. These are example signal-bandwidth figures, not a promise about total dock throughput or the modes a particular computer, dock, and monitor combination can support. See Intel’s display-bandwidth examples and guidance.
The cable or dock compatibility may not match the setup
A USB-C cable is not automatically a Thunderbolt 5 cable. For its Prime Thunderbolt 5 dock, Anker recommends using the included cable or a certified Thunderbolt 5 cable. Its published compatibility list is product-specific: it lists Thunderbolt 5 or Thunderbolt 4 laptops, excludes Thunderbolt 3 hosts, supports Windows 10/11 and macOS 14.5 or later, and excludes ChromeOS and Linux. Check the current compatibility information for your own dock rather than assuming another model has the same restrictions. Anker Prime dock specifications and compatibility.

How to troubleshoot a Thunderbolt 5 dock that is slow
- Identify the host port. Look up the exact computer model and confirm the protocol supported by the port connected to the dock. Do not infer Thunderbolt 5 capability from a USB-C connector. If the host supports an earlier or lower-capability connection, the dock cannot raise that limit.
- Check the dock’s model-specific compatibility. Review the manufacturer’s supported host generations, operating systems, display modes, and any model-specific exclusions. A dock’s port list alone does not confirm that your computer supports every listed configuration.
- Verify the host cable. First try the cable supplied with the dock. If you are using another cable, confirm that it is certified for Thunderbolt 5 and meets the dock maker’s guidance. Changing the cable cannot overcome a host port that supports a lower capability.
- Reduce display demand temporarily. Test with one display connected. If the desired mode is unavailable, try lowering its refresh rate, resolution, or color depth. Then add other displays one at a time. For MST, keep in mind that the displays’ combined signal requirements matter. Intel identifies these display settings as bandwidth factors in its bandwidth guidance.
- Consider other devices on the dock. Note which ports carry displays, storage, and other high-bandwidth devices. If performance changes when you disconnect a device, the issue may involve the combined workload or the particular port and host configuration—not a failure to deliver the headline speed to every dock port.
- Compare results with the supported configuration. If the host supports the needed capability but a display mode or connection still does not work, consult the current support information for the computer, dock, and connected display. The relevant details can depend on the exact model and configuration; there is no universal compatibility matrix covering every combination.
When replacing a cable or dock makes sense
Replace a cable only if the one in use does not meet the dock maker’s Thunderbolt 5 guidance or if testing with the included or correctly certified cable changes the result. A new cable cannot make a Thunderbolt 4 host behave like a Thunderbolt 5 host.
Consider another dock only after confirming that the computer can support the capability you need and that the current dock does not support your configuration. Compare the exact host computer and operating system, supported display count and modes, host-link and downstream-port capabilities, cable inclusion or certification, and the peripheral ports you need. For example, CalDigit says its TS5 Plus should be used with a Thunderbolt 5 or USB4 v2 host for maximum functionality and that USB-C 5/10 Gbps host devices are not compatible. That is guidance for that dock, not a universal rule for all docks. CalDigit TS5 Plus specifications.
