1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA stand mixer may move slightly during heavy mixing, and a small amount of vibration is considered normal by KitchenAid. It should not repeatedly walk toward the edge, shake violently, lose its lock, scrape the bowl, or develop persistent grinding or knocking sounds. Those symptoms usually point to an unsecured bowl or head, an attachment that is not fully seated, an overloaded or overly fast dough cycle, incorrect beater clearance, or a worn connection point.
Turn the mixer off and unplug it before touching the bowl, attachment, head, or any moving part. Then work through the checks below in order. The assembly details and speed limits quoted here are KitchenAid guidance; other manufacturers use different locking systems and operating limits, so use your model’s owner manual whenever it differs.

First, decide whether the movement is normal
KitchenAid Product Help states that “It is normal for a stand mixer to vibrate slightly while in use.” A tilt-head can also move a little when kneading a dense mixture. A small, steady movement that does not worsen and does not affect the bowl or attachment is different from instability that sends the machine across the counter.
Movement that can be acceptable
- Slight vibration while the motor is running.
- A small amount of tilt-head movement during a stiff dough cycle.
- More noticeable movement only when the mixture is dense or the batch is large.
Movement that needs a check
- The mixer walks toward the counter edge or changes position rapidly.
- Shaking is excessive, persistent, or getting worse.
- The symptom appears during light mixtures as well as dough.
- The bowl, head, or attachment will not lock securely.
- The beater strikes or scrapes the bowl.
- Grinding, knocking, or another unusual sound continues while running.
Do not try to diagnose a machine that is moving toward a fall by holding it in place while it runs. Stop it first.

Make the mixer safe before inspecting it
- Switch the mixer off. Use the power switch before reaching near the bowl or attachment.
- Unplug it. KitchenAid’s troubleshooting guidance calls for disconnecting power before inspecting setup or moving components.
- Move it away from the edge. If it has already walked, place it on a stable work surface before continuing.
- Wait for moving parts to stop. Do not touch the beater, dough hook, bowl, shaft, or head while anything is still coasting.
- Let a hot or stopped motor cool. The 2024 KitchenAid owner’s manual advises allowing a motor that has shut down to cool before trying again. Do not repeatedly restart a motor that has stopped under load.
Inspect the feet and the work surface visually. The mixer should sit evenly, with all of its own feet present and seated. This check can reveal a tilted machine or a missing foot, but it is not a manufacturer-verified cure for movement on every countertop material. Do not assume that an anti-slip pad or a heavier surface solves a loose bowl, head, or internal connection.
Identify your mixer design before checking the locks
Tilt-head and bowl-lift mixers support the bowl differently, so their troubleshooting steps are not interchangeable.
| Feature | Tilt-head design | Bowl-lift design |
|---|---|---|
| What moves for access | The motor head pivots upward. | The bowl rises and lowers on support arms while the head stays fixed. |
| Primary lock to verify | Head fully lowered and locked; bowl rotated into the base plate. | Both bowl sides seated evenly on the support arms and pressed into the secure position. |
| Connection that can cause movement | Head lock or neck pin, bowl plate, or attachment shaft. | Bowl clips, support-arm seating, or other bowl connection points. |
| Clearance adjustment | Uses the tilt-head adjustment procedure in the model manual. | Uses the bowl-lift adjustment procedure in the model manual. |
| What not to assume | A bowl-lift adjustment method is not automatically correct. | A tilt-head locking check is not a substitute for verifying both support arms. |
The table describes the two common arrangements; exact latches, pins, and adjustment screws vary by model.

Check assembly and connection points
Tilt-head mixer: head, bowl, attachment, and neck pin
- With power disconnected, lower the head completely. Confirm that its lock engages rather than stopping short of the locked position.
- Remove and reseat the bowl. Rotate it into the base plate until it is fully engaged according to the owner’s manual.
- Remove and reinstall the attachment. Push it fully onto the shaft and secure it using the model’s locking motion. A partly seated attachment can create wobble that feels like a walking mixer.
- If the mixer still wobbles or shakes with a light mixture, inspect the neck-pin area as described in the model manual. KitchenAid notes that a loose or displaced neck pin can permit extra head movement.
- Do not bend, drive out, or reposition a pin without the model-specific instructions. If the pin is loose or the head will not remain secure, stop using the mixer and arrange service.
A head that lifts during operation, a latch that will not hold, or a bowl that rotates out of its seated position is a connection problem, not something to compensate for by pressing down on the machine.
Bowl-lift mixer: support arms and bowl clips
- Lower the bowl completely and switch off the lift mechanism.
- Check both sides of the bowl. They should rest evenly on the support arms rather than sitting higher on one side.
- Press the bowl into its secure position using the procedure for the exact model. Do not run the mixer while one side is only partly engaged.
- Raise the bowl and verify that it remains centered and locked before attaching the beater.
- If the bowl will not stay secure after correct seating, stop. KitchenAid identifies worn bowl clips or other connection points as possible causes that may require compatible replacement parts.
Confirm a replacement bowl, clip, base plate, or related part against the exact model number. Parts that look similar are not automatically interchangeable.
Attachment and shaft checks for either design
With the mixer unplugged, look for an attachment that is cocked, loose, or not fully pushed onto the shaft. Remove it and check for obvious damage, then reinstall it exactly as the manual shows. If the shaft or attachment has visible damage, or if the attachment remains loose after correct installation, do not continue operating the machine.

Match the load and speed to the job
Dense dough and large batches place more strain on the motor, bowl lock, and support structure. If the mixer shakes mainly with stiff dough, stop and reassess the recipe quantity, dough density, and speed before changing any adjustment.

Yeast dough
KitchenAid advises using the dough hook for kneading yeast dough and not exceeding Speed 2. Its guidance also warns that kneading above Speed 2 may cause the bowl to unlock on some models. These are KitchenAid limits, not a universal rule for every brand or model; check your own manual when it specifies a different setting.
- Turn the mixer off and unplug it if the bowl is moving or the head is lifting.
- Reduce the batch to the amount permitted by the manual. A recipe that fits physically may still be too heavy for the machine’s rated dough load.
- Install the dough hook rather than using a flat beater for kneading.
- Restart at the manufacturer’s recommended low speed and keep yeast-dough kneading at no more than Speed 2 when following KitchenAid guidance.
- Stop again if the bowl unlocks, the head rises, or the motion remains excessive.
Other heavy mixtures
Thick cookie dough, chilled ingredients, and large quantities can also increase strain. Use the attachment and speed listed for the specific model. Do not infer that a higher speed is safe merely because the motor sounds able to turn; the bowl-lock and support system may be the limiting factor.

When the symptom is not load-related
If shaking occurs with an empty bowl, a light batter, or at low speed, load is less likely to be the sole explanation. Recheck the bowl and head locks, attachment seating, and beater clearance. Persistent movement after those checks warrants support or service rather than repeated speed experiments.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check beater-to-bowl clearance when the beater scrapes
Incorrect clearance can make the beater strike the bowl, leave ingredients at the bottom, or transmit unusual movement through the bowl. It is a separate issue from a loose base or worn lock, so do not treat clearance adjustment as a universal fix for a mixer that walks.
KitchenAid’s dime test
- Unplug the mixer and attach the flat beater.
- Place a dime in the bowl.
- Run the beater only as directed by the model’s adjustment guide, observing the dime from a safe position. KitchenAid says a properly adjusted beater should move the dime about one-quarter inch with each pass.
- Stop the mixer immediately if the beater strikes the bowl or the dime is not moving as described.
- Follow the adjustment procedure for the exact design. Tilt-head and bowl-lift models use different directions.
KitchenAid’s adjustment guide lists a flathead screwdriver as the tool for the adjustment. Check the manual before buying or turning anything: screw location, access, and the permitted adjustment differ by model. If the beater continues to hit the bowl, do not run the mixer while trying to “work through” the contact.

Clearance symptoms and their limits
- Scraping or metal-on-bowl contact: stop immediately and correct or service the clearance.
- Ingredients left at the bottom: clearance may be too high, but recipe quantity and bowl shape can also affect mixing.
- Walking with no scraping: clearance alone may not be the cause; check locks, load, and connection points.
Use a symptom-based decision path
| What you observe | First action | If it remains after the check |
|---|---|---|
| Slight vibration only during heavy mixing | Verify bowl/head seating and use the recommended attachment and speed. | Continue only if the movement stays slight and stable; monitor for worsening. |
| Machine walks toward the edge | Switch off, unplug, and reposition it safely. | Check feet, bowl/head locks, attachment seating, and batch load before another test. |
| Head moves excessively on a tilt-head | Confirm the head lock and inspect the neck-pin area according to the manual. | Stop use and contact support if the pin or lock is loose. |
| Bowl will not remain seated | Reseat it evenly using the correct design-specific procedure. | Have clips or other connection points checked; order only model-compatible parts. |
| Beater scrapes the bowl | Stop and perform the model-specific clearance check. | Service the mixer if adjustment does not restore safe clearance. |
| Grinding or knocking persists | Stop running the mixer and unplug it. | Contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. |
Know when to stop troubleshooting and seek service
Do not keep operating the mixer if it shakes excessively, will not lock securely, produces persistent grinding or knocking, or gets worse after the basic setup and load checks. KitchenAid recommends contacting support for recurring symptoms or apparent mechanical problems.
Information to collect before contacting support
- The exact model number and serial number.
- Whether the symptom occurs with an empty bowl, a light mixture, or only a heavy dough.
- The speed setting and attachment in use.
- Whether the head or bowl unlocks, whether the beater contacts the bowl, and whether unusual sounds are present.
- What changed immediately before the problem began, such as a new bowl, attachment, or recipe size.
This description helps support distinguish a setup issue from a worn clip, neck pin, lock, shaft, or other internal component. Do not disassemble the motor housing or defeat a safety lock to keep using the machine.
Prevent a recurrence without masking the fault
- Use the attachment and maximum speed specified for the recipe and model.
- Keep yeast-dough kneading within the manufacturer’s stated speed limit; for KitchenAid guidance, that is no more than Speed 2 with the dough hook.
- Respect the model’s batch-size limits even when the bowl appears to have room.
- Before each heavy mix, verify that the bowl and head are fully locked and that the attachment is fully seated.
- Stop at the first sign of bowl unlocking, beater contact, or a new grinding or knocking sound.
- Use only parts confirmed for the exact model when a bowl clip, base plate, or other connection component needs replacement.
These checks reduce avoidable strain, but they cannot repair a worn or damaged connection. A mixer that remains unstable after correct setup should be serviced rather than restrained by hand or repeatedly restarted.
Quick Recap
Quick checklist
- Switch off and unplug the mixer.
- Move it safely away from the edge and check that its feet sit evenly.
- Identify whether it is tilt-head or bowl-lift.
- Reseat the bowl, lock the head or support arms, and reseat the attachment.
- For a tilt-head, follow the manual’s neck-pin check if light mixtures still cause wobble.
- Reduce a heavy batch and use the correct attachment and speed; KitchenAid yeast-dough guidance is dough hook, no higher than Speed 2.
- If the beater scrapes or leaves ingredients behind, perform the model-specific dime test and adjustment.
- Stop and contact support for persistent instability, an unsecured bowl or head, grinding, knocking, or worsening movement.
