If your SodaStream is producing flat water, start with the bottle and water level before assuming the machine has failed. Use a bottle approved for your exact maker, fill only to its marked line, seat it according to that model’s locking system, and carbonate plain water before adding flavor. Then identify whether the machine uses a Quick Connect or screw-in CO₂ cylinder and check that cylinder’s installation and remaining gas. A cylinder that is correctly installed but produces no bubbles or sputtering may be empty.
The steps below follow SodaStream’s US support guidance. Names, bottle compatibility, cylinder systems, exchange procedures and support contacts can differ by model and country, so use the instructions for the exact machine in front of you.

Start with the symptom: flat water, leaking water or overflow
“Not carbonating” can describe several different problems. Separating them prevents you from replacing a cylinder when the real issue is bottle fit, or from trying to remove a pressurized bottle unsafely.

Do not begin by opening the machine or attempting to repair an internal valve. The published troubleshooting material provides checks for bottle fit, fill level, locking, water-first carbonation and cylinder replacement, but it does not provide a universal user procedure for repairing an internal seal or valve.

1. Verify that the bottle matches the exact SodaStream model
A bottle that looks close enough can still fail to seal or lock correctly. SodaStream’s troubleshooting flow begins with compatibility because a wrong bottle can cause poor carbonation, leakage or an apparent lack of gas.
Check the model-specific bottle list
Use the compatibility information for your maker’s precise model, not a general statement about SodaStream bottles. For example, the US FRESH troubleshooting guidance says that all SodaStream carbonating bottles work with FRESH except the DUO and CRYSTAL glass bottles. That exception is specific to the cited model guidance; it should not be generalized to every machine.
- Match the bottle to the maker’s model name and connection design.
- Do not assume a bottle designed for another machine will lock, seal or tolerate pressure correctly.
- If the bottle is visibly damaged, deformed or unable to sit in its normal position, stop using it until you have a compatible replacement.
Check the bottle before inserting it
Inspect the neck, threads or locking area and the bottle body for damage. A damaged bottle may leak or fail to engage the machine’s safety mechanism. Do not improvise with adapters, tape or forced seating; the support instructions are based on approved bottle-and-maker combinations.

2. Fill only to the marked line
Use cold, plain water and stop at the fill mark molded or printed on the carbonating bottle. Both the screw-in and Quick Connect troubleshooting pages list the fill line as an initial check for overflow and poor carbonation.
Why the fill line matters
The machine needs room above the water for gas to enter and for foam to expand. Filling beyond the line can push water or foam into the machine and make a normal carbonation cycle look like a leak. Filling far below the line reduces the amount of water being carbonated and can change the result.
- Remove the bottle from the maker if it is attached.
- Pour plain water to the bottle’s marked line.
- Wipe the outside of the neck and the machine’s bottle-contact area if they are wet.
- Continue only when the bottle is within the maker’s stated fill limit.
Do not add flavor, syrup or other ingredients at this stage. Carbonate water first, then add flavor after the bottle has been removed safely. SodaStream’s support wording is explicit: “Always fizz water before adding any flavor!”

3. Seat and lock the bottle using the procedure for your machine
Different SodaStream makers use different bottle connections. A general screw-in or Quick Connect model is not operated exactly like the MIX.
General screw-in and Quick Connect seating
On the general guidance for these systems, a correctly inserted bottle leaves a gap between the bottle and the machine’s base. Follow the maker’s insertion motion rather than pushing the bottle farther upward to eliminate that gap. If the bottle does not settle into its normal position, remove it and recheck compatibility and the neck area.
- Insert the bottle straight and use only the force described in the model instructions.
- Confirm that the bottle is held by the machine before pressing the carbonation control.
- If the bottle rocks, sits unusually high or contacts the base differently from the illustrations for your model, stop and correct the fit.
SodaStream MIX: Snap-Lock and release dial
The MIX uses a Snap-Lock system and a release dial, so its procedure differs from ordinary screw-in or Quick Connect instructions.
- Set the release dial to the unlocked position.
- Insert the bottle and push its neck fully upward.
- Tilt the bottle toward the maker as directed for the Snap-Lock connection.
- Turn the dial clockwise to lock the bottle.
- Carbonate only after the bottle is fully locked.
When finished, do not remove a MIX bottle until the release dial is unlocked and pressure has been released. SodaStream warns that trying to pull the bottle out while it remains pressurized can cause uncontrolled ejection and serious injury. Never defeat or bypass the locking mechanism.
4. Carbonate plain water before adding flavor
Flavoring before carbonation is a common cause of overflow and poor results. Empty the bottle, refill it with plain water to the line and run the carbonation cycle first. Add flavor only after the bottle is safely released from the maker.

Use plain water for the diagnostic test. If plain water carbonates normally, the maker and cylinder are likely delivering gas and the earlier problem was related to the order of preparation or the amount of liquid and foam in the bottle. If plain water remains flat, continue with the cylinder checks rather than adding more syrup.

5. Identify the cylinder system before touching the CO₂ cylinder
SodaStream uses two different cylinder connections in the US support material: Quick Connect and screw-in. They are not interchangeable simply because both are SodaStream CO₂ products.

Look at the cylinder’s valve seal and compare it with the machine’s documentation. Do not force a cylinder into a connection that does not match.
6. Reinstall or replace a Quick Connect cylinder
Use this sequence when the maker is designed for Quick Connect and the cylinder needs to be removed or replaced. The bottle must come out first.

- Open the machine’s back cover.
- Raise the cylinder handle.
- Insert the Quick Connect cylinder bottom first.
- Lower the handle so the cylinder is secured.
- Replace the back cover.
After installation, attach a compatible bottle, fill it to the marked line with plain water and run a test. If there is still no carbonation, check that the handle is fully lowered and the cylinder is the correct Quick Connect type before escalating.
7. Reinstall or replace a screw-in cylinder
For a screw-in maker, remove the bottle first and keep the machine upright on a stable surface. Install the cylinder gently by hand. SodaStream’s replacement guidance says: “Do not use tools and make sure the cylinder is secured in its place.”
- Remove the carbonating bottle.
- Place the maker upright on a stable surface.
- Remove the empty cylinder according to the model’s instructions.
- Align the replacement screw-in cylinder with the connector.
- Turn it by hand until it is secure; do not use pliers, a wrench or another tool.
- Reattach the bottle and test with plain water at the fill line.
Do not overtighten or cross-thread the cylinder. If it will not start smoothly by hand, stop and check that the cylinder and connector are the same system and that the threads are aligned.

The 130L cylinder note
SodaStream’s US replacement page states that the 130L cylinder has been discontinued. If your machine or cylinder is associated with that size, check current model-specific replacement and exchange guidance rather than assuming a currently sold cylinder is an automatic substitute.
8. Decide whether the cylinder is empty
After confirming bottle compatibility, fill level, seating, carbonation order and cylinder installation, observe the machine during a plain-water test. SodaStream says that a properly checked cylinder that produces no bubbles and no sputtering may be empty.
Signs that justify an exchange
- The cylinder is the correct Quick Connect or screw-in type.
- It is installed and secured using the maker’s procedure.
- The bottle is compatible, filled to the line and correctly locked.
- You are carbonating plain water before adding flavor.
- The machine produces neither visible bubbles nor the usual sputtering response.
At that point, use SodaStream’s cylinder exchange route online or through a local retailer where available. Exchange availability, collection rules and eligible cylinder types can vary by country and retailer, so verify the service for your location.

If water leaks around the bottle
Stop the cycle and check the three fit-related causes first: the bottle is compatible with the exact model, the water is below the marked line and the bottle is locked or seated as the model requires. A wet or damaged bottle neck can also prevent a proper seal. Do not continue pressing the carbonation control while water is escaping.
If foam rises into the machine
Release the bottle using the normal procedure, clean and dry accessible surfaces, then repeat with plain water at the fill line. Adding flavor before carbonation or overfilling can create excessive foam. Never open a cover or pull a bottle free while pressure remains.

Do not force it. Set the release dial to the unlocked position and wait for pressure to be released as specified by the MIX instructions. SodaStream’s warning about uncontrolled ejection applies even when the bottle appears stuck.

10. What not to do
- Do not mix Quick Connect and screw-in cylinders.
- Do not assume a bottle fits because it is made by the same manufacturer.
- Do not carbonate liquid above the fill line.
- Do not add flavor before the water has been carbonated.
- Do not use tools to install a screw-in cylinder.
- Do not force a bottle out of a MIX while it may still be pressurized.
- Do not attempt an unverified internal valve, seal or pressure-system repair.
These shortcuts can create leaks, damage the connector or turn a fit problem into a pressure-related injury.
11. When to contact SodaStream support
Contact SodaStream support when the checks above do not restore carbonation, when a cylinder exchange is needed, or when the machine shows a persistent leak or mechanical problem. The US troubleshooting pages direct customers to exchange an empty cylinder online or through a local retailer and provide US support contact details.
Have these details ready
- The exact maker model, such as MIX or FRESH.
- Whether the cylinder has a pink Quick Connect seal or blue screw-in seal.
- The bottle type and whether it is listed as compatible with that model.
- Whether the bottle was filled to the marked line and carbonated before flavor was added.
- What happens during a test: bubbles, sputtering, leakage, overflow or no response.
- Whether the cylinder was recently installed or exchanged.
Use local support guidance when you are outside the United States. Product names, compatible bottles, exchange options and contact channels are not guaranteed to be identical across regions.
A complete diagnostic sequence
Run the following sequence once, in order, rather than changing several variables at the same time.
- Identify the exact SodaStream maker model.
- Confirm that the bottle is approved for that model; remember that compatibility exceptions exist.
- Inspect the bottle and neck for damage.
- Fill with plain water to the marked line.
- Seat and lock the bottle using the model-specific procedure.
- Identify the cylinder system by the valve seal: Quick Connect or screw-in.
- Confirm the cylinder is installed and secured using the matching procedure.
- Carbonate the plain water before adding any flavor.
- Observe whether there are bubbles or sputtering and whether water leaks.
- If there is still no gas response, arrange a cylinder exchange or contact SodaStream support instead of opening the machine.
This order isolates bottle and fill problems before cylinder supply, while keeping pressurized components closed and handled only through the manufacturer’s documented steps.
