If your mouse wheel stops scrolling on a website but works elsewhere, the mouse may be fine: the cause may be limited to that browser, page, or embedded area. Test the same wheel in another app, another browser, and another website before changing settings or replacing hardware. Where the problem occurs is the quickest clue to what to try next.
Find out where scrolling fails
Start with a short comparison rather than assuming the mouse is broken. Open a document or another app with content that can scroll, then try a second browser and a second website. These tests help separate a device or operating-system issue from a browser configuration or page-specific problem. Microsoft recommends trying a page in another browser as part of general Edge troubleshooting, and Mozilla similarly recommends another-browser testing when diagnosing a website problem in Firefox (Microsoft Support; Mozilla Support).
| Where the wheel fails | What to investigate first |
|---|---|
| Multiple apps and browsers | Mouse connection or power, wheel condition, or operating-system pointing-device settings. |
| One browser across several sites | Browser extensions, theme, settings, profile, cached data, or hardware acceleration. |
| One website or one embedded area | Whether that area can scroll, where pointer or keyboard focus is, site settings, or page-specific behavior. |
These patterns indicate where to investigate, not a definitive diagnosis: a site-specific symptom does not prove the site is at fault, and a browser-only symptom does not prove an extension caused it.
Check the page, pointer, and focus
- Move the pointer to an ordinary part of the page and try the wheel again. A form control, frame, menu, or other embedded content may be receiving the input instead.
- Try scrolling a different section of the same page. Some pages contain panels with their own scrolling area, while the outer page may not move when the pointer is over that panel.
- Check whether the page has enough content to scroll in the direction you are trying. If it does, click a neutral area of the page and test again.
- If only a particular page or embedded area fails, compare another site before changing browser-wide settings.
A Mozilla community thread describes a similar report of wheel scrolling failing on some pages but not others; it is from 2013 and is useful as an example of the symptom, not as a current universal fix (Mozilla Support community thread).

Test another app, browser, and website
Use the comparisons in order and note the results. Try a document or other scrollable app, a second website in the same browser, and the affected website in another browser. If you do not have another browser installed, the app test and second-site test still help narrow the scope.
- It fails in other apps too: move on to the mouse and operating-system checks below.
- It works in other apps but fails across sites in one browser: troubleshoot that browser, beginning with extensions and temporary profile changes.
- It fails on one site only: treat it as a page-specific issue until further tests show otherwise. Microsoft advises contacting the website owner when a problem appears specific to that site (Microsoft Support).
Fix a browser-specific problem
If scrolling works in other apps and browsers but not in one browser, isolate browser changes before resetting everything. Exact menus and labels differ by browser version, so use the browser’s current settings search if a path does not match what you see.
Restart and update the browser
Save work in open tabs, close and reopen the browser, then check for and install available updates. Retest the same page and a second website. This is a basic isolation step: it does not establish that an update or restart is a wheel-specific fix.

Temporarily disable extensions
Turn off extensions temporarily, then reload the affected page. If scrolling returns, re-enable extensions one at a time and retest to identify a conflict. Microsoft includes disabling extensions among its general Edge troubleshooting steps (Microsoft Support).
Use Firefox Troubleshoot Mode
In Firefox, open the application menu, select Help, then Troubleshoot Mode and confirm the restart. Try the page while the mode is active. Mozilla says that if the problem no longer occurs in Troubleshoot Mode, an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration is likely involved. This is an isolation test, not proof of which item is responsible. Return to normal mode and change one suspect at a time; Mozilla’s guide explains how to investigate extensions, themes, and acceleration (Mozilla Support).
Check settings and browsing data carefully
Review browser settings that may affect the site, and test in a fresh or private session if available. Clearing cached browsing data can be useful in broader browser or website troubleshooting, but the cited guidance does not establish it as a specific mouse-wheel fix. Be aware that clearing site data may sign you out or remove saved site preferences. Mozilla and Microsoft include settings, extensions, or browsing data in broader troubleshooting guidance (Mozilla Support; Microsoft Support).

When only one website or embedded area is affected
First confirm that the pointer is not over a control or nested scrolling panel. If the page still behaves differently from other sites in the same browser, try the same address in another browser and, if practical, another device. If the problem stays tied to that page, report the browser and version, the page address, and the steps that reproduce it to the site owner.
There are technical reasons a page can affect scrolling behavior. Microsoft Edge engineering has explained that page event handlers that cancel a browser’s default scrolling behavior can interfere with optimized scrolling. Its 2017 article discusses touchpad Pointer Events; it illustrates how site code can affect scrolling, but does not prove a particular mouse-wheel failure (Microsoft Edge Blog).
Check the mouse and operating system
If the wheel fails in multiple applications and browsers, investigate the input device rather than making browser changes. These are practical diagnostic checks, not fixes prescribed by the browser articles cited above.

- Your hand can relax in comfort hour after hour with this ergonomically designed mouse. Its contoured shape with soft rubber grips, gently curved sides and broad palm area give you the support you need for effortless control all day long.
- You’ve got the control to do more, faster. Flipping through photo albums and Web pages is a breeze, especially for right-handers—with three standard buttons plus Back/Forward buttons that you can also program to switch applications, go full screen and more. And side-to-side scrolling plus zoom gives you the power to scroll horizontally and vertically through your music library, maps and Facebook feeds, and zoom in and out of photos and budget spreadsheets with a click.* * Requires Logitech SetPoint software (Windows) or Logitech Control Center software (Mac OS X)
- Two years of battery life practically eliminates the need to replace batteries. ** The On/Off switch helps conserve power, smart sleep mode extends battery life and an indicator light eliminates surprises. ** Battery life may vary based on user and computing conditions.
- The tiny Logitech Unifying receiver stays in your laptop. There’s no need to unplug it when you move around, so there’s less worry of it being lost. And you can easily add compatible wireless mice and keyboards to the same wireless receiver.
- For a wireless mouse, check its battery or charge and reseat its receiver; for a wired mouse, unplug and reconnect it, or try another USB port.
- Inspect the wheel for visible dust or debris. Avoid liquid or force that could damage the device.
- Review the operating system’s mouse or pointing-device settings, including scroll behavior, and restore an unexpected setting if you know what it changed.
- Connect another mouse or pointing device and test the same apps. If the second device scrolls normally while the first fails across apps, the original mouse is a stronger suspect.
A basic USB wired mouse with a wheel can serve as an optional cross-check if you do not have another pointing device. Replacing the mouse makes most sense after the fault follows it across apps and browsers, not when only one website is affected.

Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Replacing the mouse after one page fails: compare apps and browsers first; a page-specific failure may have nothing to do with the device.
- Changing several settings at once: change one item, retest, and record the result so you can identify what mattered.
- Clearing all browser data as the first step: this can remove sign-ins and preferences, and the cited sources do not establish it as a wheel-specific remedy.
- Assuming a site-code explanation is proven: page behavior is one plausible branch when the issue is limited to a site, not a conclusion from the symptom alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the wheel work on some websites but not others?
Different pages can handle scrolling differently, and some contain embedded areas or controls that receive pointer input. If the failure remains limited to one page after comparison tests, report the reproducible behavior to its owner.

Should I clear cookies or cache to fix mouse scrolling?
Not as a guaranteed wheel-specific fix. Browser support guidance discusses cached data in broader troubleshooting, but clearing site data can sign you out or remove preferences.
When should I replace my mouse?
After testing it in multiple apps and browsers and, if possible, comparing another pointing device. If the fault follows the mouse across those tests, replacement may be reasonable.
