A screenshot file can be “empty” in two very different ways: it can be a literal zero-byte file, or it can contain image data but open as transparent, black, or otherwise blank. A zero-byte PNG was not successfully written, so an image editor cannot recover pixels from it. Recreate the capture, then verify the save location, format, dimensions, and write result. If the file has a nonzero size, use a separate display/rendering diagnosis instead of treating it as a failed save.
Start by identifying the exact failure
Open the file manager’s properties panel and check the size in bytes. Do not rely only on the filename ending in .png; an extension does not prove that a valid PNG was encoded.
| What you see | What it means | First action |
|---|---|---|
| 0 bytes | No image bytes were written to the file. | Capture again from the source tool and inspect every output step. |
| Nonzero size, but the image looks blank | Image data exists, but the captured content, color mode, transparency, or viewer may be the problem. | Open it in a second image-capable application and inspect the capture conditions. |
| The file cannot be found | The screenshot may have been saved elsewhere, copied to the clipboard, or never completed. | Check the tool’s configured destination and completion notification. |
| A file has another format, such as HEIF | The capture tool used a different output format than you expected. | Check the selected format before changing the extension. |
If the file is genuinely zero bytes, editing, renaming, or converting it cannot restore the missing pixels. The practical fix is to create a new capture after finding where the capture or write stage failed.
Use this recovery sequence before changing settings
- Make a small test capture. Capture a simple window or a small screen region rather than a long webpage. A small test tells you whether the basic workflow works.
- Use the platform’s built-in capture flow. This separates an operating-system problem from a third-party app or automation problem.
- Save to a simple local folder. Choose a location you can write to, such as your Desktop or a test folder in your home directory. Confirm the exact path shown by the tool.
- Check the resulting byte count. Refresh the file manager and inspect the new file’s properties. A nonzero result confirms that the capture and write path can work.
- Only then return to the original app or script. Compare its destination, format, dimensions, and completion handling with the working test.
Windows: recapture with Snipping Tool
Save a new snip
- Press Windows+Shift+S.
- Select rectangular, window, full-screen, or free-form snip mode and make the capture.
- Open the notification or the Snipping Tool editor that appears.
- Choose Save Snip, select a local folder, and confirm the filename and format.
- Open the saved file’s properties and verify that its size is greater than zero.
Microsoft’s Snipping Tool workflow puts the capture in its editor for editing, saving, or sharing. The Print Screen key can instead copy an image to the clipboard without creating a PNG file. If that was your workflow, paste the clipboard contents into an image-capable application and save from there.

If Snipping Tool works but your app does not
- Compare the app’s save directory with the directory you inspected. Relative paths may resolve against a different working directory than you expect.
- Check whether the app reports completion before the file stream is closed. A process that exits or is interrupted during encoding can leave an incomplete output.
- Try a short filename and a local folder to rule out an invalid path or unavailable network location.
Mac: verify the Screenshot app’s destination and format
Capture and inspect the save location
- Press Shift+Command+3 for the full screen, or press Shift+Command+5 to open the Screenshot controls.
- In the Screenshot controls, open Options and inspect Save to. The default location is the Desktop, but it can be changed.
- Make a test capture and check that location immediately. Verify the file’s byte count rather than assuming it was saved beside the application or document you were using.
Check PNG versus HEIF on newer macOS
Apple documents that, on supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, standard-dynamic-range (SDR) screenshots use PNG while high-dynamic-range (HDR) screenshots use HEIF. If you expected a .png but selected an HDR workflow, the output format may explain the mismatch. Do not “fix” that by renaming a HEIF file to .png; select the format you need or convert the image with an image application that understands the source format.
Some applications, including Apple TV, may block window capture. If only one protected application produces a missing or blank result, test the same shortcut on an ordinary Finder or browser window before diagnosing storage or permissions.
Check the destination, not just the screenshot command
A successful-looking capture can still fail when the destination is unavailable. Save a fresh test image to a local folder and check all of these conditions:

- Correct path: confirm the complete folder and filename, including differences in capitalization or automatic extensions.
- Write access: make sure your account can create and modify a file in that folder. A protected, read-only, or managed location can reject the write.
- Available space: check the volume that actually contains the destination, not merely the system drive. Large full-page or high-resolution captures need more space than a small screen snip.
- File locks and sync folders: test outside a removable drive, cloud-sync conflict folder, or application-managed directory.
- Completion: wait for the tool’s save operation to finish before closing it or starting another capture.
Apple’s general file guidance identifies destination capacity and permissions as possible reasons that moving or copying an item fails. Apply those as checks, not as proof that either issue caused your particular zero-byte screenshot.

When a script or Windows capture API creates the file
Automation has more failure points than a keyboard shortcut. Check the pipeline in order:
- Capture support: verify that the target display, window, or session supports the capture API before starting.
- Session start: confirm that the capture session actually starts and that errors are surfaced instead of ignored.
- Frame arrival: wait for a frame event or returned frame object. Do not invoke the encoder on a null or not-yet-populated frame.
- Dimensions: log the frame width and height. Both must be greater than zero.
- Content bounds: use the frame’s content size. Microsoft warns that areas outside a frame’s content size can contain undefined data.
- Encoding: check that the PNG encoder returns data or completes without an exception.
- File write: write all returned bytes, flush, and close the stream. Then read the final path and report its size.
Microsoft’s Windows.Graphics.Capture documentation demonstrates a support check, session and frame workflow, and saving a PNG from a frame. Mirror that order in your implementation and log each transition so you can identify the first failed stage.

Browser automation: inspect viewport dimensions
Mozilla Bugzilla issue 1492357 records a WebDriver case in which a zero width or zero height capture produced an invalid zero-byte image. That is a documented edge case for the reported browser-driver context, not a universal explanation for every empty PNG. Before taking a browser screenshot:
- Log the browser viewport and page dimensions.
- Confirm that the page has rendered a real frame rather than an unopened or minimized window.
- Wait for the target content or a known selector before calling the screenshot method.
- Verify the exact browser, driver, and automation-library versions when comparing behavior with that issue.
- Check the returned byte array and the final file size; do not assume that a completed method call means valid image data.
Do-it-yourself browser checks for a blank-looking image
These checks apply when the file has a nonzero size but appears transparent, black, or empty:
- Open the image in a second viewer. A viewer-specific rendering problem can make a valid image appear blank.
- Inspect the page at the moment of capture. A page may still be loading, showing a consent overlay, or waiting for client-side content.
- Capture a visible element instead of the full page. This helps distinguish a page-layout problem from an encoder problem.
- Disable unusual transparency or compositing settings and test a solid background.
- Capture a simple static page with the same script. If that succeeds, compare the failing page’s redirects, authentication, bot checks, frames, and lazy-loaded content.
A nonzero file that is visually blank needs content and rendering investigation; the documented zero-byte case does not establish a single cause for that branch.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely investigation | Fix to try |
|---|---|---|
| Exactly 0 bytes after a manual capture | The save step, destination, or selected workflow did not write data. | Repeat in Snipping Tool or Screenshot, save to a local writable folder, and verify the size. |
| Print Screen created no file | The key copied pixels to the clipboard instead of saving a PNG. | Paste into an image editor and save, or use the Snipping Tool save workflow. |
| Mac file is not PNG | An HDR capture on supported macOS Tahoe 26-or-later hardware can use HEIF. | Check Screenshot Options and select the required format or convert it properly. |
| Automation returns a zero-byte image | A frame may not have arrived, dimensions may be zero, or encoding/write completion may be missing. | Log support, session, frame, width, height, encoder output, stream close, and final path. |
| File has bytes but looks blank | The page content, transparency, protected window, or viewer may be involved. | Open it elsewhere and test a simple visible page or element. |
| Only one application fails | The application may block capture or render through a protected surface. | Test another window and consult that application’s capture restrictions. |
Prevent the next empty screenshot
- Print the resolved output path and final byte count in every capture job.
- Reject zero width or height before invoking an encoder.
- Wait for a known page selector, network-idle condition, or other explicit readiness signal.
- Keep a small known-good test URL or static window for regression checks.
- Use a local writable destination during diagnosis, then reintroduce network or managed storage.
- Preserve the browser, driver, operating-system, and capture-library versions with automation logs.
- For API calls, record the HTTP status and the
X-Page-VerdictandX-Billedheaders alongside the saved response.
FAQ
Can renaming an empty file to .png repair it?
No. Renaming changes only the filename; it does not create encoded image bytes. Capture the source again or fix the stage that failed to write.
Why can a screenshot be valid but still look empty?
A nonzero image can contain transparency, a protected or not-yet-rendered window, or content your viewer does not display correctly. Open it in another viewer and test a simple visible target before treating it as a zero-byte failure.
Should I assume low disk space or permissions caused the problem?
No. They are sensible destination checks, but they are not proof of the cause. Confirm by saving a small test capture to a known writable local folder and checking its resulting size.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a recovery utility restore pixels from a zero-byte PNG?
No. A zero-byte file contains no image data; recreate the capture after correcting the capture or write failure.
What should I log in an automated screenshot job?
Log capture support, session start, frame arrival, width and height, encoder completion, stream close, resolved output path, final byte count, and any response status or verdict headers.
