Check compatibility first, then work through the app, network, signal and pairing steps below. Button sequences and requirements vary by model, so use your washer’s manual when they differ from these general instructions.
1. Confirm that your washer supports Wi-Fi
Not every Samsung washer can join SmartThings. Samsung’s Smart Care guidance distinguishes Smart Care from SmartThings: a Smart Care button by itself does not establish that the washer has Wi-Fi capability. Look for a Smart Control button or a Wi-Fi indicator, then verify the exact model code in its user manual.

If the model does not support Wi-Fi, app pairing will not work. Check the manual rather than relying on a feature name or button that sounds connected.
2. Check SmartThings and the Samsung account
Update the SmartThings app, sign in to the Samsung account that should control the appliance, and use the app’s add-device flow for a washer. Samsung notes that setup may differ depending on whether the washer has already been registered or is already connected to a network. Its SmartThings connection guidance also identifies app and home-network conditions as possible factors in setup failures.

If the washer appears to belong to another account or was set up before, follow the app’s device-specific prompts rather than assuming a brand-new-device procedure applies.
3. Check Wi-Fi band, network name and password
For the washer software-update connection process described by Samsung, the network must use 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, and Samsung says the network name should contain only letters and numbers. These details apply to that described process; requirements can differ by model and setup flow. Check the manual for your exact washer before changing router settings. See Samsung’s washer software update guidance.
- Confirm the required 2.4 GHz network is available to the washer.
- Check that the network name follows the applicable model or setup requirements.
- Verify the password by connecting another device to that same network.
4. Check signal where the washer sits
A phone or laptop may connect elsewhere in the home while the washer receives a weak signal in the laundry area. Samsung states in its software update guidance, “If Wi-Fi signal is too weak the Washer might not connect,” and suggests moving the router closer.
Try improving coverage at the washer before buying equipment. If the router cannot be moved and you have established that signal is weak there, a range extender is one possible option, but it is not a guaranteed fix or a product recommendation from Samsung.
5. Update credentials if your Wi-Fi changed
If you recently changed the network name or password, the washer may still be trying to use its old details. Samsung says some devices let you change Wi-Fi details in SmartThings. If no network-change option appears for your washer, it may need to be reset and connected again. Follow Samsung’s instructions for changing SmartThings device Wi-Fi properties and your model’s manual.
6. Put the washer into pairing mode
On applicable models, press and hold Smart Control until AP appears on the washer display, then continue setup in SmartThings. This sequence is not universal: use the manual if your panel or display differs. Samsung’s washer reset instructions also describe AP/OK button steps for clearing stored network details on supported models.

Power cycle for a basic glitch
To power-cycle the washer, unplug it or switch off its breaker, wait about 1 to 5 minutes, then restore power. Samsung describes this as a general troubleshooting step. It is not the same as resetting the washer’s Wi-Fi network information.
Network reset to clear saved Wi-Fi details
A washer-specific network reset clears stored network information; use the procedure for your exact model, since button combinations vary. Before resetting, record any displayed error code: Samsung warns that resets can erase error-code history. Avoid repeating resets without a reason.
8. Gather useful details if connection still fails
If the setup does not complete, note the model code, the SmartThings screen or percentage where it stops, any message on the washer, and whether another device can connect to the same Wi-Fi. Contact Samsung support with those details and consult the manual for model-specific next steps. General connection guidance cannot identify the cause for a particular washer without its model and failure symptoms.
Quick Recap
Quick diagnosis by symptom
| What you notice | What to check next |
|---|---|
| No Wi-Fi or Smart Control indication, or only a Smart Care button | Verify Wi-Fi and SmartThings support in the exact model’s manual; Smart Care alone is not proof of Wi-Fi capability. |
| SmartThings cannot finish adding the washer | Update the app, confirm the intended Samsung account, and check the model’s network requirements and password. |
| Setup fails only near the washer | Check signal at that location and try moving the router closer. |
| The home Wi-Fi name or password changed | See whether SmartThings offers a Wi-Fi change option; otherwise, follow the model-specific reset and reconnection steps. |
| The washer never shows AP during setup | Check whether the model uses the Smart Control/AP procedure and consult its manual for the correct pairing mode. |
| Connection still fails after these checks | Record the model code, failure point and display message, then contact Samsung support. |
