1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA running heater does not guarantee that every part of a room will feel warm. Heat may escape through cracks, cold windows and walls can make your body lose radiant heat, poorly placed furniture can steer warm air away from where you sit, and an unbalanced heating system can leave one room or floor behind. Find the cause before buying a larger heater: a short inspection usually tells you whether you need draft sealing, a safer layout, system adjustment, or professional assessment.
Diagnose the chill before changing the heater
Start by observing the room rather than guessing from the thermostat reading. The location and timing of the discomfort are useful clues.

- Mark where you feel cold. Sit in the usual chair, then stand near each window, exterior wall, door, floor edge, ceiling, fireplace and pipe penetration. A chill limited to one spot points toward a leak or cold surface; a room that feels uniformly cold points toward heat loss, inadequate distribution or a control problem.
- Note when it happens. A draft that appears when wind rises or when an exhaust fan runs suggests air leakage. Cold near glazing may persist even after the air temperature rises because the glass remains a cold radiant surface.
- Check for moving air without creating a fire hazard. Hold a thin strip of tissue near suspected joints, but do not use a candle, lighter or other flame around curtains, fuel-burning appliances or leaking gas. Look at door edges, window sashes, skirting boards, floor-to-wall joints, ceiling fixtures, fireplaces and places where pipes or cables pass through walls.
- Compare surfaces and air. If the air feels warm but a nearby wall or window feels markedly cold, radiant discomfort is likely part of the problem. If warm air collects near the ceiling while your seating area remains cool, circulation or heater placement deserves attention.
- Check controls and distribution. Compare rooms on the same floor and rooms above or below. Confirm that thermostats, radiator valves, dampers or other controls are actually calling for heat and that no furniture is blocking a radiator or supply outlet. A persistent room-to-room difference without an obvious draft can indicate balancing or maintenance trouble.
Do not seal, insulate or modify an appliance until you understand its ventilation requirements. Fuel-burning heaters need sufficient combustion air and safe flue operation; eliminating every intentional opening can create an indoor-air or carbon-monoxide hazard.
1. Air leaks are stealing heat as the heater replaces it
A heater can run continuously while outdoor air enters through small gaps. The incoming air must be warmed, and the warmed indoor air leaves through other leaks or planned openings. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends checking floors, walls, ceilings, windows, doors and fireplaces for leakage. The Australian Government Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water puts the mechanism plainly: “Draughts introduce unwanted outdoor air into a home.”

Where leaks commonly hide
- Gaps around exterior doors, including the threshold and hinge or latch side.
- Window sashes, trim and meeting rails that no longer close tightly.
- Skirting boards, floor-to-wall joints and cracks around ceilings.
- Fireplace dampers or unused flues that are not properly closed when safe to do so.
- Openings around plumbing, electrical cables, vents and other penetrations.
- Joints between different materials, such as masonry and timber trim.
How to seal a confirmed small gap
Use the material suited to the gap and surface. Weatherstripping for door gaps is appropriate where two moving surfaces meet. Caulk is intended for relatively narrow, stationary joints; compatible foam can fill larger irregular openings, but it must be used according to its label and kept away from heat sources or appliance components. Clean and dry the surface, measure the gap, fit the seal without preventing the door or window from latching, and recheck for movement of air afterward.
Do not treat weatherstripping as a universal cure. It cannot replace insulation in a cold wall, correct an unbalanced radiator or duct system, or make an unsafe heater safe. Never block a required combustion-air opening, flue, extractor or other ventilation path merely because it feels drafty. Local building and appliance rules determine which openings must remain.
When sealing should stop being a DIY job
Stop and obtain qualified advice if you find a damaged flue, soot, unusual combustion odor, suspected gas leak, persistent condensation, mold, wet insulation or an opening close to a hot appliance. A professional can distinguish an accidental leak from a designed ventilation opening and specify fire-resistant materials where necessary.

2. Cold windows and walls cause radiant discomfort
Air temperature is only one part of thermal comfort. Natural Resources Canada explains that a person near a cold window can radiate heat toward the glass and feel cold even when the room air is relatively warm. The same effect can occur beside an uninsulated exterior wall, at a cold floor edge or beneath a poorly insulated ceiling.
Recognizing a radiant-cold problem
Move the chair a short distance into the room. If the chill falls sharply while the thermostat reading changes little, the nearby surface is probably important. You may not feel a noticeable stream of air; instead, one side of your body feels cold, especially beside large glazing or an exterior wall. A surface can also be cold because outdoor heat loss is high, even if no crack is visible.
Low-risk changes to try first
- Move the occupied seat away from the coldest glass or exterior wall while preserving clear access and appliance clearances.
- Close curtains or blinds after dark when they are designed for that use, but keep them clear of heaters and do not cover vents.
- Keep doors between heated and unheated areas closed when appropriate.
- Use a rug or other suitable floor covering where a cold floor is the dominant source of discomfort, provided it does not cover a heater, vent or electrical hazard.
These steps improve the conditions at the occupied spot; they do not repair an inadequately insulated building envelope.

When insulation is the real remedy
Insulation type and thickness depend on climate, construction, moisture exposure and building style. Australian government guidance advises checking electrical safety and required clearances before insulation work. Do not compress insulation around wiring, recessed fixtures, chimneys, flues or heaters unless the product and local rules specifically permit it. In a rented home or a wall shared with another dwelling, obtain the owner’s approval before opening finishes.
An energy assessment is useful when several surfaces are cold or the cause is not visible. The Department of Energy describes walk-through assessments and more detailed methods that can include infrared cameras and blower-door testing. Those methods help locate missing insulation and leakage instead of relying on a larger heater to mask the loss.
3. Heater placement and air circulation can leave your seat cold
Warm air rises. It can travel across the ceiling, cool against a window or exterior wall, and fall as a cold circulation path. YourHome recommends arranging heaters and furniture so that people are not positioned in that path.

Typical circulation mistakes
- A heater is tucked behind a sofa, cabinet or long curtain, so warm air cannot enter the room.
- A chair is placed directly in the falling-air path beside cold glazing.
- A thermostat is near the heater or another warm spot and shuts the system off before the occupied area is comfortable.
- A supply outlet is blocked while a return grille is obstructed, disrupting the intended airflow.
- Portable equipment is aimed at one object or corner, leaving the rest of the room stratified.
Rearrange safely
- Read the appliance instructions and preserve every stated clearance from walls, curtains, furniture and combustible materials.
- Clear the space immediately in front of radiators, baseboards, registers and return grilles.
- Move seating out of the cold-window return path and into the region where warmed air mixes, without placing it directly against a heater.
- Keep interior doors positioned so they do not block supply or return openings.
- After the room reaches its normal operating temperature, test the seat again rather than judging from the air near the ceiling.
Do not improvise covers, enclosures or duct extensions around a portable or fuel-burning heater. A layout that looks efficient can overheat the appliance, restrict combustion air or create a fire risk.
4. Uneven heating points to distribution or control trouble
If one room or floor remains colder than others despite no obvious draft, the building may be losing heat unevenly or the heating system may not be distributing it correctly. UK guidance identifies radiator balancing and system maintenance as relevant measures. Similar symptoms can occur when controls are misadjusted, a valve is closed, or the thermostat responds to a warmer location than the room you occupy.

- Confirm that the cold room’s radiator, register or other outlet is open and unobstructed.
- Compare the settings of room controls and verify that the thermostat is not being heated by sunlight, a nearby appliance or a draft from another area.
- Notice whether the problem affects an entire floor, only one room, or only one side of a room.
- Listen for unusual cycling, banging, persistent air noise or a heater that runs but produces little usable heat.
- Record the conditions at the same time each day so a technician can see the pattern.
Radiator balancing and other system adjustments involve changing flow so emitters receive heat more evenly. Because procedures differ by system, do not remove covers, bleed components, alter combustion settings or change electrical wiring unless the manufacturer and local rules clearly allow the work. A qualified heating professional can inspect controls, flow, maintenance condition and distribution safely.

Match the remedy to the evidence
| What you observe | Most likely contributor | First response | Escalate when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moving air at a door, window, skirting board or penetration | Unwanted air leakage | Confirm the gap, then use suitable weatherstripping, caulk or compatible foam while preserving required ventilation | The opening is near a flue, fuel-burning appliance, wiring or a structural defect |
| Cold feeling beside glazing or an exterior wall without a clear draft | Cold radiant surface or insufficient insulation | Move the seat, use safe window coverings and investigate insulation | Several surfaces are cold, moisture is present, or the insulation location is unknown |
| Warm ceiling, cold occupied zone, or a chair in a falling-air path | Stratification or poor placement | Clear outlets and returns; rearrange furniture within appliance clearances | The appliance overheats, airflow remains abnormal or instructions are unclear |
| One room or floor stays colder with no obvious leak | Distribution, balancing or control issue | Check settings, unobstructed emitters and maintenance indicators | The difference persists or the system requires balancing, electrical work or combustion service |
| Persistent cold throughout the building | Combined envelope loss and system capacity or distribution problem | Arrange an energy assessment and heating-system inspection | Always involve a qualified professional before major modifications |
Why buying a larger heater is usually the wrong first step
A larger heater may raise the temperature near itself while drafts, cold surfaces or poor distribution continue to make the room uncomfortable. It can also cycle poorly, overload a circuit, exceed a manufacturer’s clearance requirements or create unsafe combustion conditions. Correct the diagnosed loss or airflow first. Only after the building envelope, controls and distribution have been checked should a qualified professional determine whether the existing equipment is actually undersized.
Safety rules for sealing and heating work
- Preserve ventilation. Draft-proofing must not block combustion air, flues, extract ventilation or other openings required for safe operation and indoor air quality.
- Follow appliance clearances. Keep fabrics, furniture, insulation and sealants outside the distances stated by the manufacturer.
- Do not use flame tests. Use visual inspection or a tissue strip to find air movement; never test drafts around gas or other fuel-burning equipment with a flame.
- Respect electrical risks. Before adding insulation or moving anything near electrical equipment, follow local requirements and the guidance to check electrical safety and clearances.
- Act on warning signs. A suspected gas leak, carbon-monoxide alarm, soot, damaged flue, burning odor or abnormal appliance behavior requires immediate attention from the appropriate emergency or qualified service provider.
- Account for local rules. Ventilation, insulation, fire separation and heating requirements vary by country, region, building type and appliance.
When to arrange an energy assessment or heating professional
Arrange an assessment when you cannot locate the cause, several rooms behave differently, insulation is inaccessible, or sealing has not changed comfort. A walk-through can identify obvious leakage and control issues. Infrared imaging can reveal cold areas associated with missing insulation or thermal bridges, while blower-door testing can help quantify and locate uncontrolled air leakage. These methods diagnose the property; they do not automatically specify one universal heater size.
Use a qualified heating professional for radiator balancing, combustion service, flue inspection, electrical changes, persistent control faults and any work that affects an appliance’s safety. Give the professional your observations: where the chill occurs, whether air moves, which surfaces feel cold, which rooms are affected and what settings were in use.
