Why Your Refrigerator Is Not Cooling: What to Check First

Start by measuring the temperature, not by guessing from how the shelves feel. Put an appliance thermometer in the refrigerator and check the freezer with a suitable thermometer. FoodSafety.gov’s safety targets are 40°F (4°C) or below for the refrigerator and 0°F (-18°C) or below for the freezer. If food is warmer than that, keep the doors closed, move high-risk perishables to another reliably cold refrigerator or an iced cooler when possible, and work through the checks below.

A display setting is only the temperature the control is requesting; it is not proof that the food compartment has reached that temperature. Controls, vent locations, coil access and service procedures vary by model, so use the owner’s manual whenever it conflicts with generic guidance.

1. Confirm the temperature and protect the food

Place the thermometer in the main refrigerator compartment, away from a door shelf, and allow it to settle according to its instructions. Check the freezer separately. A refrigerator that feels slightly cool can still be above the safe limit, while a brief warm reading after a large grocery load may improve as the appliance runs.

FoodSafety.gov advises keeping refrigerated food at or below 40°F (4°C) and frozen food at or below 0°F (-18°C). Do not rely on touch, smell or taste to judge safety. If the compartment is above 40°F, reduce door opening and move meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, dairy, cooked leftovers and other perishable food to a known-cold appliance or an iced cooler.

FoodSafety.gov says an unopened refrigerator keeps food cold for about four hours during a power outage. Its guidance says to discard refrigerated perishable food after four hours without power, and to discard specified perishables that have been at 40°F (4°C) or above for more than two hours. Those time rules address outage or known temperature exposure; a mechanical fault may have started earlier than you realize. When the elapsed time or temperature is uncertain, use the official food-safety chart and err on the side of discarding high-risk food. As FoodSafety.gov puts it: “After a power outage never taste food to determine its safety.”

Settings and safety limits are different

0°F (-18°C) or below Food-safety target for the freezer FoodSafety.gov guidance; verify with a suitable thermometer

34°F–37°F refrigerator Suggested control range LG USA Support article dated July 6, 2026; follow your model manual

2. Check power, controls and operating modes

  1. Verify household power. Confirm the plug is fully seated and that the outlet works with a safe test, such as a lamp. Check the circuit breaker or fuse if other signs point to a power interruption. Do not work on wiring or remove electrical covers.
  2. Inspect the control display. Look for a control lock, vacation mode, demo mode or an inadvertently changed temperature. Some models stop normal cooling or alter operation in these modes.
  3. Set the temperature according to the manual. Do not apply a generic button sequence to reset an unfamiliar model. Record the current setting before changing it so you can tell whether the control was altered.
  4. Allow stabilization time when appropriate. Frigidaire and Sub-Zero guidance advises allowing 24 hours for a new setting or a newly installed appliance to stabilize. Use that waiting period only after confirming that food remains at a safe temperature; do not leave vulnerable food in a warm compartment while waiting.

If the unit has no lights, display or sound after a confirmed power supply, stop at the owner-accessible checks and use the manufacturer’s support path. The cause could be electrical or control-related and cannot be identified safely from a general symptom.

3. Restore cold-air circulation

Many refrigerator designs make cold air in the freezer and distribute it to the fresh-food compartment. A blocked freezer vent can therefore leave the refrigerator section warm even when the freezer seems cold.

  • Material type:Stainless steel

Clear vents and avoid overpacking

  • Locate the supply and return vents shown in the manual or visible inside the compartments.
  • Move packages, bottles and containers away from those openings.
  • Leave enough space for air to move around shelves and drawers instead of compressing food against the rear wall.
  • Check for a large item, ice buildup or a fallen package obstructing the freezer’s air path.

Do not chip ice from a panel with a knife or other sharp tool. If frost is blocking an internal passage, follow the model’s defrost instructions or arrange service rather than puncturing a liner or refrigerant line.

Check shelves, drawers and the door path

Make sure shelves and drawers are seated in their intended positions. A bin that projects past the frame, a tall bottle, or a shelf installed on the wrong track can keep the door from closing even when the latch appears engaged. Close both doors slowly and inspect the perimeter for a continuous contact with the gasket.

4. Inspect and clean the door gasket

A gasket that is torn, warped, dirty or partly out of its channel can admit warm, humid air continuously. Look for gaps, hardened sections, food residue and places where the seal is folded over. Clean the gasket with warm soapy water and dry it before closing the door.

Frigidaire describes a quick screening method: close the door on a dollar bill and pull gently. Some resistance should be felt. This is one manufacturer’s practical check, not a conclusive test of every seal failure; a gasket can pass at one point and still leak elsewhere. If the seal is visibly damaged or cannot sit correctly, use the model’s parts and service guidance rather than trying to reshape it with heat or adhesive.

5. Consider installation, room conditions and recent use

Ask what changed before the temperature rose. Whirlpool support identifies several conditions that can temporarily affect cooling:

  • The refrigerator was newly installed or moved.
  • It is operating in a garage, porch or other location outside the ambient-temperature range specified in the manual.
  • A large quantity of warm groceries was loaded at once.
  • The doors have been opened frequently.
  • The appliance has recently been unplugged or had its setting changed.

Keep doors closed as much as practical while the unit recovers. Frigidaire and Sub-Zero advise up to 24 hours for a temperature change or new installation to stabilize, but the appliance must still be monitored with a thermometer. If the room is outside the permitted range, moving the refrigerator or correcting the installation may be necessary; changing the control alone may not solve the problem.

6. Clean condenser coils only when the manual allows it

Dust and debris on accessible condenser coils can reduce heat release and cooling performance. Coil location differs: some refrigerators expose coils near the front or rear, while others place them behind a panel or in a sealed area. Never remove a service panel merely to reach them unless the manufacturer explicitly identifies that as an owner maintenance task.

  1. Read the maintenance section for your exact model and confirm that the coils are owner-accessible.
  2. Unplug the refrigerator before permitted cleaning and keep hands away from fans, wiring, hot components and other moving or electrical parts.
  3. Use a soft-bristle brush or dedicated condenser-coil brush and, where the manual permits, a vacuum nozzle to lift loose dust without bending fins.
  4. Replace any cover correctly, restore power and monitor the temperature rather than assuming the cleaning fixed the fault.

Frigidaire Appliance Parts suggests cleaning every six to 12 months, but that is one publisher’s interval, not a universal schedule. Dusty rooms, pets and the appliance design can require a different frequency. If the coils are inaccessible, leave them alone and arrange qualified service when other checks fail.

7. Use the symptoms to choose the next safe action

What you observe Owner-accessible checks What not to assume
Both refrigerator and freezer are warm Power, control mode, setpoint, door closure, room conditions and permitted coil maintenance Do not conclude that the compressor or sealed system has failed without inspection
Freezer is cold but refrigerator section is warm Clear vents, remove overpacking, check airflow paths and confirm drawers or packages are not blocking returns Do not force a fan or remove an internal panel to reach it
Temperature rises after loading groceries Keep the door closed, spread food so air can circulate and monitor with a thermometer Do not treat a control display as proof that food is safe
Door appears closed but warm air persists Inspect gasket, hinges, shelves and packages; clean the gasket A dollar-bill check cannot rule out every seal or hinge problem
Cooling remains inadequate after basic checks Record measured temperatures, timing and any unusual sounds or frost, then contact support Do not diagnose a refrigerant leak, fan, control board or compressor from symptoms alone

8. Decide when to call for service

Use manufacturer support or a qualified appliance-repair provider when the refrigerator cannot maintain a safe temperature after you have checked power, settings, airflow, door closure, installation conditions and any maintenance expressly permitted by the manual. Have the model and serial number, measured refrigerator and freezer temperatures, and the time the problem began available.

Service is especially appropriate when you see damaged wiring, repeated breaker trips, burning odors, oil-like residue, unusual grinding or clicking, a fan that will not run, heavy frost that blocks airflow, or a temperature that continues to climb. Unplug the appliance and keep food elsewhere if there is an electrical hazard. Do not open a sealed system, add refrigerant, bypass a safety switch or remove panels around energized or moving parts.

Warranty status matters: check the warranty terms before authorizing non-authorized work. The model’s manual and the manufacturer’s support channel determine which repairs are owner-permitted and which require trained service. There is no reliable repair-versus-replacement price or lifespan threshold that can be applied to every refrigerator from the symptoms alone.

A practical first-check checklist

  • Measure the refrigerator and freezer with thermometers.
  • Move vulnerable food to a reliably cold location if the refrigerator exceeds 40°F (4°C).
  • Confirm power, the temperature setting and any lock, vacation or demo mode.
  • Clear visible vents and leave room for air circulation.
  • Check that shelves, drawers and packages allow both doors to close fully.
  • Inspect and clean the gasket; replace it through the proper parts channel if damaged.
  • Consider recent installation, room temperature, warm groceries and frequent door opening.
  • Clean accessible condenser coils only when the manual permits it, with power disconnected.
  • Allow model-appropriate stabilization time while continuing to monitor food temperature.
  • Contact manufacturer support or qualified service if safe checks do not restore cooling.

What not to do

  • Do not taste food to decide whether it is safe.
  • Do not rely on smell, touch or a control-panel number instead of a thermometer.
  • Do not use a generic reset sequence copied from another model.
  • Do not scrape frost with a knife or drill into an ice-covered panel.
  • Do not remove panels, reach near fans or wiring, or handle refrigerant without qualified training.
  • Do not leave the doors open while experimenting with settings.

The bottom line

Measure first, protect the food, then check the controls, vents, door closure, gasket, installation conditions and only the maintenance your manual permits. A refrigerator that still cannot hold 40°F (4°C) or below after those checks needs manufacturer guidance or qualified service, not a guessed diagnosis.
