Blurry phone photos usually come from a smudged lens, movement, poor light, a subject that is too close, an obstructing accessory, or a camera setting—not necessarily a broken camera. Check the blur pattern, then work through the simple tests below. The exact focus behavior and menu options vary by iPhone or Galaxy model.
Start by identifying the kind of blur
- The whole frame looks smeared: the phone may have moved while the photo was taken.
- A moving person or object is smeared, but stationary edges look sharp: subject movement is a likely cause.
- The intended subject is soft while another area is sharp: focus may have landed elsewhere, or the subject may be too close for the active camera.
- The image looks hazy, streaked, or unusually dark and fuzzy: check for a dirty lens, glare, difficult lighting, or condensation.
These clues can narrow the cause, but they do not diagnose a fault by themselves. Samsung notes that moving the camera or photographing a moving subject can create blur even when the camera is otherwise working normally. Try these checks in order
1. Clean every camera lens
Use a soft, dry microfiber or microfibre cloth on the front and rear camera lenses. Clean all rear lenses, not just the one that appears to be in use: Samsung says additional lenses may contribute to preview, rangefinding, or autofocus. Fingerprints and dust can reduce clarity, but cleaning will not fix blur caused by motion, focus distance, condensation, or physical damage. Apple’s camera guidance and Samsung’s Galaxy focus guide also recommend cleaning the lenses.
2. Remove anything around the camera and retest
Temporarily remove the case, lens protector, film, magnetic mount, converter, or other accessory that could cover or sit close to the camera. Take a test photo without it. Apple specifically recommends checking for blocked cameras or flash and magnets near the camera; it also notes that certain accessories can contribute to motion blur in low light. Samsung warns that camera protectors can cause focus problems or light distortion. This is a diagnostic check, not evidence that every case or protector is faulty.

3. Hold the phone steady and give the subject more light
Brace the phone with both hands, keep it still as you take the shot, and add light to the subject if possible. In dim conditions, a camera may need more time to capture an image, making movement more visible. A moving subject can blur even if the phone is steady; stabilization does not freeze the subject. Samsung recommends holding the device as still as possible and making sure the subject is well lit.
4. Step back if a close subject will not focus
Phone cameras have a minimum focusing distance, and it depends on the active lens. If a close object stays soft, move back and reframe rather than repeatedly tapping the screen or zooming in. Samsung’s current U.S. support guidance gives these general minimum distances:

These are Samsung guidance figures, not universal distances for every Galaxy, iPhone, or lens generation. Samsung also gives model-specific minimum distances for the 5x telephoto camera: 30 cm on the S25 Ultra and 80 cm on the S26 Ultra. At high zoom, a Galaxy may switch to a telephoto camera designed for distant subjects, leaving a nearby subject out of focus. Check guidance for your exact model before relying on a distance figure. Samsung’s U.S. support page lists these examples.

Close-up blur on a Galaxy
On supported Galaxy models, Focus enhancer can automatically switch to the Ultra Wide camera to reduce blur around a close subject. Samsung describes toggling it with the flower icon in the Camera preview; availability and controls vary by model and software. If the subject remains soft, step back and test again.

Soft areas in a 200 MP photo
Samsung says that focus range in 200 MP mode varies with aperture, shooting distance, and subject position, so some areas may appear soft as a normal optical characteristic. A sharp subject with a softer background can also be ordinary depth-of-field blur rather than a fault.
Galaxy tracking autofocus appears to stay locked
Samsung’s Galaxy focus guide says Tracking auto-focus locks onto the selected person or item for three seconds. If that behavior is interfering with your framing, turn the feature off; the precise setting and menu location can differ by device and software.

Light streaks or glare
Lens flare is more likely in bright conditions or at night with many light sources, and Samsung says it can be more noticeable with a dirty lens or high zoom. Clean the lens and adjust the angle or lighting to test whether the artifact changes. Editing may reduce an unwanted artifact in an existing image, but it does not correct the conditions that caused it during capture.

If the specific problem is dark lines or flicker under indoor lights, Samsung describes adjusting Pro-mode shutter speed to 1/120 second or lower. This is a targeted suggestion for that lighting symptom, not a general setting for blurry photos; Pro mode and its controls may not be available on every model.

A foggy or hazy camera
Temperature changes can lead to condensation inside the camera area. Samsung recommends letting it clear naturally. Do not open the phone or apply heat.

On iPhone or iPad
- Remove a case or accessory that could obstruct the camera, flash, or lens area, and clean the front and rear lenses.
- Restart the device, then install any available iOS update.
- Test the front camera and rear camera separately to see whether the issue affects one or both.
- If the camera still does not work properly, contact Apple Support or arrange service. Apple’s steps are in its camera and flash troubleshooting guide.
On a Galaxy phone
- Install available device software and app updates.
- If the symptom suggests it, turn off Tracking auto-focus, then test the camera again.
- Reset the Camera settings and retest.
- Test in Safe Mode to check whether a third-party app could be involved.
- If focus problems persist after these checks, contact Samsung support or use an authorized service route. Samsung notes that menu paths and screenshots vary by model and software in its Galaxy focus guide.
When a blurry camera needs service
Seek manufacturer support if the same camera continues to produce blurry images after you have cleaned the lenses, removed accessories, tested in good light at a suitable distance, and tried the relevant restart or software checks. If only one camera view is affected, tell support whether it is the front camera, a particular rear lens, or both. The guidance from Apple and Samsung supports escalation when basic troubleshooting does not resolve the problem; it does not identify the cause of an individual phone’s fault.
