LinkedIn and Discord can display the same Open Graph image differently because each service builds its own link preview from your page metadata and image. For LinkedIn, start with its documented recommendation: a 1.91:1 image at least 1200 × 627 pixels and no larger than 5 MB. For Discord, the available evidence here does not establish an official crop ratio or size threshold, so verify the actual preview rather than treating a suggested dimension as a rule. In Next.js App Router, check the deployed page’s og:image and either use a route-level image file or configure metadata explicitly.
Why does an Open Graph image crop on LinkedIn or Discord?
An Open Graph image is source material for a platform-generated preview, not a guarantee that every platform and context will show the full image identically. A preview may be cropped or presented at a different scale because the destination service controls its display. Also check that the shared route points to the intended image: correct-looking React component code does not prove that the deployed page’s HTML contains the expected metadata.

LinkedIn has published image guidance
LinkedIn recommends a 1.91:1 sharing image, with minimum dimensions of 1200 × 627 pixels and a maximum file size of 5 MB. It says images less than 401 pixels wide display as thumbnails. These are LinkedIn’s stated sharing-module requirements, not a universal Open Graph specification. See LinkedIn’s guidance for making a website shareable.

No current official Discord image ratio, size threshold, or preview-cache interval is established by the available sources. Suggestions about Discord dimensions should therefore be treated as experiments, not official requirements. After fixing the metadata and image, inspect the preview in the context where it is shared. A secondary overview is available at OpenGraphImage’s platform previews guide, but it is not Discord documentation.

How to diagnose the preview before changing code
- Inspect the deployed page’s head. Open the shared URL in a browser, use developer tools to inspect the rendered HTML head, and confirm the final
og:imagepoints to the expected image. Also verify the route has the intendedog:title,og:description, andog:url. Next.js explains how metadata appears in the document in its metadata and Open Graph images guide. - Check the actual image file. Confirm its intrinsic dimensions, aspect ratio, file size, and that it is the full-size asset rather than a thumbnail or derivative. For LinkedIn, meet the 1200 × 627 minimum, 1.91:1 recommendation, and 5 MB limit.
- Keep important content away from the edges. Leaving room around text and key visual elements is a practical design safeguard against differing display crops. It is not an official safe-zone specification for either LinkedIn or Discord.
- Test the image URL as a public resource. Fetch it without logging in and verify that the expected image bytes are returned. LinkedIn notes that a compliant image may fail to appear if the site blocks its crawler or the image sits in a protected directory or website.
- Recheck after deployment. Next.js says generated metadata-image routes are cached by default unless dynamic APIs or dynamic configuration affect them. The sources do not establish how quickly LinkedIn or Discord refreshes a preview, so do not assume a change will appear immediately.
How to set an Open Graph image in Next.js App Router
Next.js supports both colocated image files and metadata configured through the Metadata API. A route-level image can override an image defined higher in the route tree. Choose the method that best matches whether the image is shared across pages or needs to vary by route.
Option 1: Add a static route-level image
Place a supported image file in the relevant route segment. For example:

With a static image file, Next.js adds the Open Graph image tags, including image type, width, and height. The documented supported formats are JPG, JPEG, PNG, and GIF. The App Router convention documents an 8 MB maximum for an opengraph-image file; if LinkedIn will use that same image, stay within LinkedIn’s stricter 5 MB limit. For a generated image, add an opengraph-image.tsx route file and configure its size, contentType, and optional alt. Next.js’s documented example uses ImageResponse with a size of 1200 × 630 pixels and a PNG content type. That is an example, not a requirement imposed by every sharing platform. The image-generation API supports flexbox and a subset of CSS, so do not assume arbitrary browser CSS will render identically.

Generated images are statically optimized by default unless dynamic APIs or uncached data affect the route. Check the current file-convention documentation for the limits and behavior applicable to your Next.js version.
Option 3: Define Open Graph metadata explicitly
Use the metadata export for static metadata or generateMetadata when metadata depends on route data. Next.js documents Open Graph image entries with a URL, width, height, and optional alt text; the URL must be absolute. For example:

The image is too narrow
LinkedIn states that images less than 401 pixels wide display as thumbnails. Check that the deployed og:image points to your full-size image and not a small derivative.

The image is too large or does not meet the recommendation
For LinkedIn, use a 1.91:1 image at least 1200 × 627 pixels, and keep the file at or below 5 MB. The separate 8 MB limit in Next.js describes its App Router image-file convention; it does not supersede LinkedIn’s limit when LinkedIn is the destination.
The crawler cannot access the image
LinkedIn says a compliant image may still fail to appear if the site blocks LinkedIn from fetching it or the image is in a protected directory or website. Make sure the image URL works without authentication and is accessible to the platform’s crawler. LinkedIn’s sharing guidance describes these access issues.
What to do when Discord still crops the preview
First confirm the deployed page exposes the intended Open Graph image and that the image URL returns the expected public file. Then try an image composition with more space around essential text and subjects, and inspect the resulting preview. Because an official Discord crop ratio, size threshold, and refresh interval are not established by the sources cited here, those adjustments are practical tests rather than guaranteed fixes. Avoid promising a specific cache-clearing or waiting interval.
