Why Your New Router May Be Slower Than Your Old One—and What to Check

A new router can deliver worse Wi-Fi than an older one, but there is no single hidden setting that explains every slowdown. Start by separating internet-service performance from Wi-Fi performance, then check channel congestion and width, device compatibility, placement, and features such as QoS. Change one thing at a time and compare results on the same device, in the same place.

First find out whether the slowdown is your internet connection or Wi-Fi

A speed test over Wi-Fi measures both the internet path and the wireless link. If either is slow, the result is slow. When your home setup allows it, connect a computer directly to the modem with Ethernet and run a test; TP-Link recommends this as an early diagnostic step. It recommends Cat6 or higher for that connection. TP-Link’s troubleshooting guide explains the direct-to-modem comparison.

  • Wired and Wi-Fi tests are both poor: the wireless link is less likely to be the only problem. Check the modem, service, and any equipment between the modem and router.
  • Wired is strong but Wi-Fi is poor: focus on wireless signal, interference, client-device compatibility, and router configuration.

Record the test device, connection type, location, and Wi-Fi band if you can see it. Use the same speed-test service or endpoint for repeat comparisons. Do not compare a wired test on one setup with a distant Wi-Fi test on another and treat the difference as a router-setting result.

Compare Wi-Fi near the router and where it is slow

Run a test close to the router, then repeat it in the room where you notice the problem. Keep the same device and note whether it is connected to 2.4, 5, or 6 GHz, if that information is available. Walls, obstructions, router placement, and the client’s position can all affect results. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi and your home layout guide discusses these factors.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5) | Dual Band Wireless Internet, Gigabit, Easy Mesh, Works with Alexa - A Certified for Humans Device
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

A strong result nearby but a weak result in the problem room points toward range, obstructions, or the conditions on that band—not necessarily a defective router. 6 GHz also requires support from both router and client, and is most useful close to the router; having a router that offers it does not mean every device can use it or benefit throughout the home. Microsoft’s guidance covers device and layout considerations.

Check channel congestion before changing channel width

Nearby Wi-Fi networks can compete for airtime. Microsoft suggests using a Wi-Fi analyzer’s network graph to inspect nearby networks and identify congestion. If your router offers channel selection, follow its manufacturer’s instructions, try a less congested option where appropriate, and repeat the same tests. A channel change is a comparison, not a guaranteed fix.

Why channel width is not a simple “bigger is faster” switch

Channel width affects potential throughput, but it also interacts with congestion, signal conditions, and client compatibility. ASUS states that “Channel Width will affect your wireless speed performance and signal stability.” Its guidance does not make one width universally best for every router and environment. ASUS’s channel-bandwidth guide explains the setting.

On 2.4 GHz, a 40 MHz width can cause reliability or compatibility problems for some older adapters. Microsoft suggests trying 20 MHz under those conditions. A narrower width may be a useful stability test in a crowded environment, while a wider channel can offer more throughput when the radio environment and clients support it. Do not automatically select the widest option; compare performance and reliability on the devices you actually use. Microsoft and ASUS both describe the trade-off.

  • NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
  • WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
  • SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

Temporarily test QoS or parental controls

Quality of Service (QoS) and parental-control features can affect how a router handles traffic. TP-Link lists them as possible factors to rule out during slow-speed troubleshooting, not as proven causes of every slowdown. If either feature is enabled, note its original state, disable only one feature temporarily, and repeat your comparison. Restore it if the test makes no meaningful difference or you rely on it. See TP-Link’s troubleshooting steps.

Update firmware, but keep security enabled

Check the manufacturer’s support information for your exact router model and firmware. Menus, defaults, and setting behavior vary, so a universal path or ideal value cannot be given without the model. Apple says router software updates can improve stability, performance, and security; consult its recommended Wi-Fi router settings alongside your router maker’s instructions.

Do not weaken Wi-Fi security to chase speed. Hiding the network name (SSID) is not a security measure, and Apple notes it may expose identifying information. Keep security settings aligned with current manufacturer guidance rather than using concealment as a workaround. Apple’s recommendations explain this point.

Use a controlled retest, not a string of guesses

  1. Write down the baseline: note whether each test is wired or wireless, the device, room, band if visible, and result.
  2. Compare wired and wireless where possible: test a computer directly to the modem for the wired baseline, then test Wi-Fi with the same device and a consistent test service.
  3. Compare locations: test close to the router and in the problem room without changing other variables.
  4. Change one setting: for example, adjust a channel or test a different channel width. Avoid changing several options at once.
  5. Repeat the same tests: Microsoft specifically recommends running speed tests again after network or setup changes. Keep changes that solve the observed problem without creating reliability or compatibility issues; restore others.

If you need exact menu directions, use the router’s model and hardware or firmware version when consulting its manufacturer. A setting name or default on one router may not map directly to another.
