Why Your Moto Tag 2 Isn’t Updating Its Location—and How to Fix It

If your Moto Tag 2 shows an old location in Google Find Hub, that does not automatically mean the tag has failed. It is not a live GPS tracker: when the tag is away from your phone, its location can refresh only after a participating Android device detects it over Bluetooth and reports that sighting. Work through the checks below to tell a normal gap between sightings from a phone, settings, battery, or pairing problem.

Why isn’t my Moto Tag 2 updating its location?

The tag has two different finding modes. Nearby finding uses a direct connection between your phone and tag; remote finding relies on detections by participating Android devices. Bluetooth Low Energy, Bluetooth Channel Sounding, and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) support nearby finding, but precision features require compatible hardware and software. Channel Sounding requires a supported Android phone with Bluetooth 6.0 and Android 16 or later. UWB requires a UWB-capable Android 12-or-later phone with UWB enabled, and availability varies by region. Not every phone supports precision finding. Motorola explains these capabilities in its moto tag 2 User Guide.

When the tag is out of direct range, nearby Android devices can detect its Bluetooth signal and securely report the location of that detection to Find Hub. If no participating device has detected it recently, Find Hub may keep showing the last reported location and its timestamp. That is a record of the most recent network sighting, not a promise of the tag’s current position.

Why does Find Hub show an old location?

First check what Find Hub says about the selected tag. If it shows a nearby/current location and you have the tag with you, try Find nearby or Play sound. If it shows a last-known location, the map is showing the most recent reported sighting; it cannot create a newer remote position without another network detection. You can choose Mark as lost in Find Hub so you can be notified if the network detects the tag later. See Motorola’s Find your tag instructions.

A tag that rings when you are standing beside it has demonstrated a local connection at that moment. It has not demonstrated that a participating device has since detected it remotely.

How do I refresh my Moto Tag 2 location?

  1. Check the tag in Find Hub. Open Find Hub and select Moto Tag 2. Note whether the location is nearby/current or last known. If you have the tag, try Find nearby or Play sound.
  2. Test in a better radio environment. If the tag is with you, leave an elevator, basement, underground parking area, or other obstructed space. Motorola warns that Bluetooth signals may be blocked or weakened in elevators and underground areas. Turn on Bluetooth and make sure the paired phone has Wi-Fi or mobile data, then reopen Find Hub and try the nearby controls.
  3. Verify the Google account and Find Hub settings. Use the Google Account associated with the tag, confirm that the tag appears in Find Hub, and check that the phone has internet access, Bluetooth, Find Hub, and the requested nearby-device and location permissions. Enable Allow device to be located in the phone’s Find Hub settings. Motorola’s Android 16 example is Settings > Google > All services > Find Hub; menus vary by phone, so search Settings for “Find Hub” if that path differs. Motorola lists Android 9 or later, internet access, Bluetooth, a Google Account, Find Hub, and relevant permissions among the pairing requirements in its user guide.
  4. Check battery and app status. Open the Moto Tag app, select the tag, and inspect its battery status. The app can show whether the tag is connecting, play its sound, and offer firmware updates; Motorola describes those functions on its moto tag app support page. If the tag is unresponsive or will not beep, check that its replaceable CR2032 battery is seated correctly, positive side up, and replace it if discharged. Use the included pin at the pinhole—not the buzzer hole—to open the tag, as shown in the user guide.
  5. Update firmware and restore Fast Pair if needed. In the Moto Tag app, open More > Firmware and install an offered update. If the pairing pop-up does not return, press the tag button once to trigger Fast Pair. If it still does not appear, update Google Play services and restart the phone.
  6. Reset only after less disruptive checks. Remove the tag from Find Hub and forget any remaining saved Bluetooth record before resetting. Press the tag button once, then immediately press and hold it for five seconds until the first beep; wait for the second confirmation beep. Reset clears the tag’s existing configuration, so you will need to set it up again. Follow the reset instructions in the Moto Tag 2 User Guide.

When should I contact Motorola support?

If the tag rings locally but its remote location remains old, review the selected Google Account, Find Hub location settings, phone internet connection, and the possibility that no participating device has recently detected it. If it will not power on, beep, connect nearby, or accept an available firmware update after the battery and pairing checks, use Motorola’s moto tag 2 support hub.
