If your MMO outfit is not showing up, first check whether it is missing only on the character-selection screen or also in the game world. Then look for an active costume or disguise, a hidden cosmetic slot, an unapplied change, a different saved outfit, or an appearance your character is not eligible to use. The exact menus differ by game and platform; the examples below show how these causes work in ESO, Guild Wars 2, and World of Warcraft.
Start by narrowing down where the appearance is wrong
Compare the character’s appearance in two places: the character-selection screen and after entering the game. If it looks wrong only at selection, that may be a preview or display issue rather than a failure to apply the outfit. Blizzard’s February 2026 pre-expansion notes, for example, listed a fix for some World of Warcraft characters on different realms whose transmog outfits failed to display on the Character Select screen: Blizzard’s WoW update notes. That was a specific WoW bug, not a general explanation for other MMOs.

Also note whether the issue affects one character or several, one cosmetic slot or the full outfit, and whether other players see the same appearance you do. These distinctions can help separate a character-specific setting or display problem from a broader appearance change, although not every game exposes all of these views or controls.

Check for a costume, disguise, or other appearance override
Some games keep your equipment intact but let another appearance layer cover it. In The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO), disguises can alter visible equipment and costumes visually replace the appearance of clothing. Bethesda also lists Style Parlor selections and vampirism among possible reasons a character may look different from expected. See ESO’s appearance troubleshooting guidance.

ESO: remove the disguise or turn off the Outfit
If armor appears at login but disappears after entering play, ESO support advises checking the Apparel accessory slots and removing an active disguise. If the appearance still does not change and no disguise is equipped, the support guidance recommends submitting an in-game ticket: ESO’s armor-disappearing troubleshooting steps.
You can also change or turn the current Outfit on or off from Collections’ Outfit Styles section or the Character UI, according to ESO’s Outfit Styles instructions. Menu wording may vary with the game’s current interface.

Make sure cosmetic slots are enabled and changes are applied
A cosmetic item can be selected but hidden, or its change may need a separate apply action. Guild Wars 2’s Fashion Templates guidance says to use the checkbox on a cosmetic item’s thumbnail to enable or disable that slot, then click “Apply to equipment” for the changes to appear in the game world. It also notes that an equipped Outfit overrides other armor cosmetics in the active Fashion Template. Follow the current interface instructions in Guild Wars 2’s Fashion Templates guide.

Confirm the intended saved outfit or template is active
In games with multiple saved appearances, the outfit you edited may not be the one currently active. Check the active outfit or template, then look for any automatic switching rules. Blizzard’s February 12, 2026 announcement describes World of Warcraft’s updated transmog system: appearances are applied to Outfit Slots, players can save multiple outfits, and outfits can be associated with situations such as changing specialization or entering a dungeon. Blizzard says, “You can also switch outfits automatically for different situations in the game.” Read Blizzard’s announcement of the updated WoW transmog system for those Midnight-era details; do not assume the same menus or rules apply in other games.
Check whether this character can use the appearance
Having an appearance in a collection does not necessarily mean every character can equip it. Blizzard support explains that an appearance may be learned for characters able to equip that gear type, while another character may not be able to use it: Blizzard’s transmog eligibility guidance. If the appearance is unavailable on only one character, check that character’s eligibility and the relevant item-slot or gear-type restrictions in your game.

- Recheck the exact view. Compare character selection with the in-world appearance and, if possible, ask whether another player sees the same thing.
- Inspect appearance layers and saved looks. Turn off disguises or costumes, enable the relevant cosmetic slots, apply pending changes, and verify the active outfit or template.
- Test another character or saved outfit. This can help identify whether the issue is tied to one character or one appearance selection; the available comparisons depend on the game.
- Use the game’s official support route if it persists. For ESO, support specifically recommends an in-game ticket when armor graphics remain wrong after checking for a disguise. For another MMO, use that game’s support instructions rather than copying menu paths from ESO, Guild Wars 2, or WoW.
Community forum workarounds may describe what helped an individual player, but they are anecdotal and are not guaranteed fixes. A game name, platform, and description of whether the problem appears at selection, in the game world, or only to you are needed for more exact instructions.
