Why won’t my leaf blower start? “Won’t start” describes several different faults, not one universal failure. The usual diagnostic order is: verify the stop switch and the model’s cold- or warm-start procedure, confirm fresh fuel in the specified mixture, then check for fuel-delivery restriction, flooding or a blocked air filter, and finally ignition. If the engine will not crank or the checks point to electrical, carburetor or internal-engine trouble, stop and use a qualified small-engine technician.

The exact steps, fuel limits, spark-plug type and gap belong to the blower’s make and model. The ECHO and STIHL guidance below illustrates how to diagnose safely; it does not replace your operator manual.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Before troubleshooting: identify the blower and make it safe

Find the make and model on the housing or product label and open the current operator manual before removing a part. A detailed ECHO troubleshooting chart, for example, covers particular ECHO blowers and gives a spark-plug gap that must not be copied to another model. Fuel ratios, primer-bulb use, choke positions, filter shapes and replacement part numbers vary.

Work outdoors or in a very well-ventilated area, away from flames, cigarettes, heaters and anything that can make a spark. Let a hot engine cool before opening the fuel system. Wear eye protection and gloves, keep loose clothing away from the intake and fan, and disconnect the spark-plug lead when the manual tells you to do so. Never run a gasoline blower in a garage, shed or other enclosed space.

ECHO’s operator-manual warning states: “Fuel vapors are extremely flammable and may cause fire and/or explosion. Never test for ignition spark by grounding spark plug near cylinder plug hole, otherwise serious personal injury may result.” Do not use that improvised spark test. Follow the manual’s approved ignition-check method or have a technician perform it.

The sequence in this article is for gasoline-powered blowers. Corded and battery blowers do not have a carburetor, fuel mix, spark plug or choke; use their electrical, battery and safety-interlock instructions instead.

What the symptom tells you

First distinguish between an engine that does not turn and one that turns but never fires. That single observation determines which branch to follow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
What you observe Most useful first branch What not to assume
No crank, no attempt to fire Stop switch, starting controls, interlock, electrical or mechanical fault Do not assume the carburetor is dirty; fuel checks cannot fix an engine that is not turning.
Engine cranks but never catches Starting procedure, fuel quality and delivery, flooding, airflow, then ignition Do not keep pulling indefinitely with the choke closed.
Engine fires briefly and dies Choke transition, restricted fuel flow, stale fuel, filter or carburetor issue A brief fire does not prove the fuel system is healthy.
Engine runs but stalls, surges or lacks power Air filter, fuel quality, fuel line or strainer, and service-required adjustment Do not alter carburetor screws without model-specific instructions.

Manufacturers do not publish a reliable percentage ranking of these causes in the cited material. Treat the table as a diagnostic order, not a claim that one fault is statistically most common.

Step 1: verify the controls and the exact starting method

Check the stop switch and controls

  1. Set the stop switch to ON or RUN, exactly as the label and manual show.
  2. Confirm the throttle, cruise-control lever and any trigger lock are in the required starting position. Some models require the throttle released; others specify a particular setting.
  3. Decide whether the engine is cold or warm. A recently stopped engine may need a warm-start procedure rather than full choke.
  4. Make sure the tube, fan cover and other safety interlocks are installed if your model uses them. Never bypass an interlock.

A switch left in the stop position is specifically listed among no-start causes in the ECHO troubleshooting chart. Electrical faults and a defective switch are also possible, so a control that feels loose, sticks or behaves inconsistently should be serviced rather than forced.

Use the manual’s cold-start sequence

Do not substitute a generic “pump and pull” routine for the instructions printed for your blower. ECHO’s support procedure for one cold-start page illustrates the logic: pump the purge bulb until fuel is visible and moves through the return line, pull the starter until the engine fires (or up to five pulls in that procedure), move the choke to RUN, and pull again if required. That is an example for the specified ECHO procedure, not a universal number of pumps or pulls.

If the engine has already fired once, leaving the choke closed can over-fuel it. Conversely, opening the choke too early on a genuinely cold engine can prevent it from catching. Use the model’s cold-, warm- and flooded-start positions rather than guessing.

If the engine is warm

Many manuals call for a warm-start position with the choke open or partly open. Read the label before pulling. If the blower was stopped after repeated attempts, treat it as potentially flooded and use the manual’s clearing procedure; do not continue with full choke.

Step 2: confirm the fuel is correct, fresh and reaching the engine

Use the specified gasoline and oil ratio

Check the manual for gasoline grade, oil type and exact two-stroke ratio, or for the separate fuel requirements of a four-stroke model. A mixture that is too old, incorrectly proportioned or contaminated can prevent starting and can damage the engine. Do not “correct” an unknown mixture by adding oil or gasoline to the tank; drain it as the manual directs and prepare a known-correct batch.

Account for storage time and brand-specific limits

STIHL’s blower FAQ says its gasoline engines may use gasoline containing up to E10. The same guidance recommends storing the unit dry when it will be unused for more than 30 days and says fuel mix older than 60 days should not be stored or used in the specific blower context described there. Those are STIHL statements, not a universal rule for every manufacturer. Your own manual controls if it sets a shorter interval, a different ethanol limit or a stabilizer procedure.

If fuel has been sitting in the tank beyond the manual’s limit, smells sour, looks cloudy or contains visible water or debris, stop repeated starting attempts. Dispose of it through an approved local collection route, inspect the tank and refill only with the specified fresh fuel. Never pour fuel onto soil or down a drain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect the tank, strainer and lines

With the engine cool and the manual’s fuel-system precautions followed, look for cracked, soft, kinked or leaking fuel lines. A blocked in-tank strainer or fuel filter can keep fuel from reaching the carburetor even when the tank appears full. ECHO lists a clogged fuel strainer or line as a no-fuel cause and directs cleaning or replacement for some faults, with dealer service for others.

ECHO’s maintenance guidance calls for checking lines for cracks, leaks and wear, as well as checking fuel-filter condition and fuel quality. Replace only a part confirmed to be faulty and matched to the exact model. Filter nipples, line diameters, routing and filter part numbers are not interchangeable merely because they look similar.

Use the purge bulb as a diagnostic clue

On models equipped with a purge bulb, the bulb should respond in the way the manual describes. If it never fills, stays collapsed, leaks, or does not move fuel through the return line, suspect a restriction, air leak, damaged bulb or incorrect line routing. Do not keep pumping a leaking bulb near a hot engine; wipe up fuel and repair the fault first.

Step 3: rule out flooding and restricted airflow

Recognize a flooded engine

Repeated full-choke pulls can put more fuel into the engine than it can burn. A strong fuel smell, wet spark plug or fuel-wet muffler can accompany flooding. In the ECHO chart, a wet muffler is associated with an overly rich mixture. Its listed remedies include opening the choke and cleaning or replacing the air filter, with carburetor adjustment referred to dealer service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Move the choke to the position specified for clearing a flooded engine, hold the blower securely and follow the manual’s pull limits. Do not spray unapproved starting fluid into the intake. It can create a fire hazard and may damage an engine designed for a gasoline-oil mixture.

Check the air filter

A dirty or oil-soaked air filter restricts airflow and can make the mixture too rich. Remove it only as the manual shows so dirt does not fall into the intake. If the manual permits cleaning, use its method and drying time; if it calls for replacement, install the correct filter. Do not run the blower with the filter omitted just to see whether it starts.

Reinstall the filter, cover and fasteners correctly before another attempt. A filter that is clean but distorted, torn or unable to seal can still admit dirt or restrict air and should be replaced with the model-specified part.

Inspect the muffler area without dismantling the engine

Fuel on or around the muffler is a stop condition: allow the blower to cool, remove ignition sources and clean the spill according to the manual. Persistent wetness, heavy carbon or a blocked exhaust requires qualified service. Do not scrape internal deposits into the cylinder or attempt an improvised exhaust modification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 4: inspect the spark plug only as the manual permits

Check the plug’s condition and identity

Once controls, fuel and airflow have been addressed, remove the plug with the correct tool and compare it with the manual. A carbon-covered, fuel-fouled, incorrectly gapped or defective plug appears in the ECHO troubleshooting chart as a possible no-start cause. The remedy may be cleaning, adjustment or replacement, depending on the condition and the model’s instructions.

Read the plug’s part number and verify that it is the exact type specified. A plug that physically fits can still have the wrong heat range, reach or terminal design. The ECHO manual cited for the covered model specifies a gap of 0.65 mm (0.026 in.); that measurement applies only to that covered model, not to every ECHO blower or any other brand.

Refit it correctly

Keep the plug hole clean while the plug is out. Thread the plug by hand first to avoid cross-threading, then tighten to the torque or method stated in the manual. Reconnect the plug lead firmly. Do not leave the lead dangling near a hot or moving part.

Do not perform an unsafe spark test

Never hold the plug against the cylinder or ground it near the plug opening while pulling the starter. Fuel vapors can ignite, which is why ECHO gives the explicit warning quoted above. If the manual does not provide a safe test procedure, or if the switch, coil, wiring or plug lead is suspect, have a qualified technician test the ignition system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the engine will not crank

A no-crank condition is outside the normal fuel-and-choke path. Confirm the stop switch, starting controls and any model-specific interlocks first. Then stop if the recoil starter is locked, unusually hard to pull, frayed or failing to rewind, or if the engine turns with grinding or binding. Do not force the starter or open the flywheel and clutch area without the manual’s procedure.

Electrical faults, a defective switch, seized components and internal engine damage require appropriate test equipment and guards. ECHO directs users to dealer service for several electrical and internal-engine fault categories. A technician can determine whether the problem is in the ignition circuit, recoil mechanism, compression or another internal component without exposing you to rotating parts or fuel vapors.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

When a carburetor problem is likely

Suspect the carburetor only after the correct start procedure, fresh fuel, fuel lines and filters, flooding checks and spark-plug checks have been completed. Symptoms can include fuel not reaching the engine, an engine that runs only briefly, surging, or a blower that requires an abnormal choke position to keep running.

Do not turn adjustment screws as a generic fix. Carburetor settings are model-specific, and an incorrect adjustment can create an excessively lean or rich mixture, unsafe operating temperatures or emissions problems. The ECHO troubleshooting information sends carburetor adjustment to a dealer in the relevant cases. Use an authorized dealer or qualified small-engine technician when the manual reserves adjustment, cleaning or replacement for service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing replacement parts without creating a new fault

Buy a replacement only after the diagnosis identifies the component and the manual confirms its specification. Use the exact model and, where provided, the manufacturer’s part number.

Part category What must match When replacement is justified Do not do this
Spark plug Part number or approved equivalent, reach, heat range and model-specific gap Fouling, damage, failed inspection or a plug the manual says to replace Do not use the 0.65 mm (0.026 in.) ECHO gap as a universal setting.
Air filter Exact housing shape, seal and model part number Torn, distorted, oil-soaked beyond the cleaning method, or too dirty to restore as the manual allows Do not operate without the filter or with a loose cover.
Fuel filter or strainer Correct size, pickup design and model compatibility Confirmed blockage or damage after inspection Do not install a visually similar filter that restricts flow or does not fit the tank pickup.
Fuel line Correct diameter, material, routing and connections Cracks, leaks, collapse, hardening or confirmed blockage Do not reroute lines by guesswork; incorrect routing can prevent priming.

If a listing or package does not identify your exact blower model, pause the purchase and check the manual or a dealer parts diagram. A model-specific spark plug, filter or line is more important than a generic claim that a part “fits most blowers.”

A practical decision tree

  1. Does the engine crank? If no, verify controls once, then arrange service for starter, electrical or internal faults. If yes, continue.
  2. Is the stop switch ON and is the cold- or warm-start procedure correct? Correct the setting and make one controlled attempt.
  3. Is the fuel fresh and the mixture correct for this model? If uncertain or outside the manual’s storage limit, drain and replace it safely.
  4. Does the purge bulb and return line behave as the manual describes? If not, inspect for a damaged bulb, blocked strainer, kinked or cracked line, or a filter problem.
  5. Could it be flooded? If there is a fuel smell or wetness, use the model’s clear-flood procedure with the choke open as directed; do not continue full-choke pulls.
  6. Is the air filter serviceable? Clean or replace it only by the manual’s method.
  7. Is the spark plug the correct type, clean and correctly gapped? Service or replace it to the model specification, without an unsafe spark test.
  8. Still no start? Stop DIY diagnosis if carburetor adjustment, electrical testing, compression or internal repair is indicated. Take the blower to an authorized dealer or qualified technician.

Questions readers commonly ask

What should I check first when the engine cranks but will not catch?

Check the stop switch and the exact start position, then verify fresh model-correct fuel and the manual’s purge-bulb/choke sequence. After that, check for flooding, air-filter restriction and the specified spark plug. This order prevents repeated choke pulls from obscuring the original fault.

Could I be using the choke incorrectly?

Yes. A cold engine may need choke, while a warm or flooded engine generally uses a more open position according to the manual. ECHO’s example moves the choke to RUN after the engine fires. Treat that as a model-specific example, not a universal timing rule.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can old fuel stop a leaf blower from starting?

Yes. Old or incorrect fuel mix can prevent starting and can restrict or damage fuel-system components. STIHL’s blower guidance says to keep gasoline engines dry for storage beyond 30 days and not to store or use fuel mix older than 60 days in the stated context. Other manufacturers may specify different limits, so follow your manual.

When should I take it to a repair shop?

Go straight to qualified service when the engine will not crank, the recoil mechanism binds, fuel leaks, wiring or the ignition switch is suspect, or the manual directs dealer service for carburetor, electrical or internal-engine faults. Also stop if you cannot identify the correct part or safely inspect the fuel system.

Is a replacement spark plug the best first purchase?

Not automatically. A plug can be fouled or defective, but controls, stale fuel, flooding, a blocked filter or a damaged line can produce the same symptom. Diagnose first, then buy the exact plug specified for your model and set its model-specific gap.
