If the laptop receives less wattage than its model is designed to accept, charging slows or the operating system may report a slow charger.
That does not mean every multiport charger divides power equally. Some chargers reserve an assured amount for each port; others let several ports draw from a shared capacity pool. The charger’s output table, the laptop’s required input, the cable, and USB Power Delivery compatibility determine what actually happens. USB-IF describes both assured-capacity and shared-capacity ports.

What changes when you connect a second device?
A USB-C Power Delivery charger and a laptop negotiate how much power can be supplied. When another device is connected, that device also requests power. The charger then follows its own port-allocation design. If the laptop’s port has independent assured capacity, its available output may remain unchanged. If the ports belong to a shared-capacity group, the laptop can receive less after the second device starts drawing power.

The important point is that “multiport” describes the number of connectors, not a universal distribution rule. A charger advertised with a high total wattage may reserve that output across several ports rather than make the full figure available to one laptop while every other port is occupied.

Your laptop therefore charges slowly when the power delivered to it falls below what its model can use for faster charging. The connected phone is not necessarily taking a fixed half of the charger’s output; the result depends on the charger’s design and the devices’ negotiated requests.
Two ways multiport chargers allocate power
| Port-capacity model | How it works | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Assured capacity | Each port has a labeled rated capacity that can be delivered independently, subject to the charger’s specifications. | Confirm that the laptop port’s assured rating meets the laptop’s recommended input. |
| Shared capacity | Several ports draw from a common capacity group. Output available to one port changes according to what the other ports are using. | Read the simultaneous-use output table, not only the charger’s headline total wattage. |
These categories come from the USB Implementers Forum’s USB Power Delivery guidance. A product can use different arrangements for different port groups, so you need the specification for the exact charger rather than a general assumption about all USB-C products.
A concrete example: Apple’s 35 W dual-port adapter
Apple documents one clear illustration. With a Mac laptop and an iPhone or iPad connected to its 35 W Dual USB-C Port Power Adapter, each device can receive up to 17.5 W. That is the allocation for that specific adapter, not a rule that every two-port charger splits power 50/50. The figures and Apple’s simultaneous-use guidance appear on its 35 W Dual USB-C Port Power Adapter support page.

| Apple adapter example | Documented value |
|---|---|
| Total adapter rating | 35 W |
| Mac laptop connected with an iPhone or iPad | Up to 17.5 W for each device |
If the laptop needs more than the delivered 17.5 W for its normal charging rate, it may charge slowly. Apple’s own advice for this situation is to unplug the other device and its charging cable from the adapter. That test applies to the documented adapter; other chargers can allocate power differently.

Why the USB-C shape does not answer the wattage question
A USB-C connector only identifies the physical connector. It does not, by itself, prove that a charger supports USB Power Delivery or a particular charging rate. The USB-IF USB Charger (USB Power Delivery) guidance explains that USB-C and USB Power Delivery are not interchangeable labels and that product capabilities vary.
USB Power Delivery can extend power levels up to 240 W, according to USB-IF. That 240 W figure is a protocol ceiling, not a promise that your charger, cable, or laptop supports 240 W. A laptop may require a much lower or higher input than another laptop, and a charger may offer different limits when several ports are occupied.
Read three separate pieces of information:
- The laptop manufacturer’s recommended charging wattage or input specification for your exact model.
- The charger’s output for the laptop port when the other intended devices are connected at the same time.
- Whether the charger and cable support the USB Power Delivery behavior required by the laptop.
How to find the laptop’s actual requirement
There is no single wattage number that applies to every laptop. Use the model-specific documentation, the label on the original power adapter, or the manufacturer’s support page. If the computer reports a delivered-wattage warning, use the guidance for that model rather than applying a generic USB-C recommendation.

Also check whether the laptop expects USB Power Delivery rather than merely a USB-C-shaped connection. A charger can have the right connector and still lack the power profile or negotiation behavior the laptop needs.
Test the cause in a few minutes
Use this sequence to separate shared-power limits from cable or charger problems. It will not guarantee a particular charging speed, but it identifies which part of the setup deserves attention.
- Record the laptop’s recommendation. Find the exact model’s recommended charging wattage and note any system message such as “Slow Charger.” Apple says a Mac may show “Slow Charger” when the delivered wattage is too low for that model; its explanation is available in Apple Support’s charging guidance.
- Check the charger’s simultaneous-use table. Look for the output assigned to the laptop port while the phone, tablet, or other device is connected. Do not use only the total wattage printed on the front of the charger.
- Disconnect the second device and its cable. Leave the laptop on the same charger and observe whether charging improves. Apple specifically recommends testing one device at a time for its 35 W adapter. If the laptop becomes faster or the warning disappears, the multiport allocation is the leading explanation.
- Try a different compatible cable. Use the cable supplied with the laptop or device whenever possible. If that cable is unavailable, use a cable whose specifications match the laptop’s USB Power Delivery requirements. A cable problem can prevent the expected power level even when the charger itself has enough capacity.
- Recheck the charger’s maximum and per-port ratings. Confirm that the charger can meet the laptop’s requirement both by itself and in the exact combination of ports you plan to use. If the simultaneous-use rating is below the laptop’s recommendation, the charger is undersized for that combination.
- Repeat with the intended devices and ports. Some chargers assign different capacities to different port groups. Test the exact ports you expect to use and compare the result with the published allocation table.
How to interpret the results
The laptop charges normally by itself
If disconnecting the other device restores normal charging, the second device is using capacity that the charger does not independently reserve for the laptop. Choose a charger whose simultaneous-use output meets the laptop’s requirement, or charge the second device from another adapter or outlet.

The laptop remains slow with every other device unplugged
That result points away from the immediate shared-load explanation. Verify the laptop’s recommended wattage, inspect the charger’s maximum output, and try the supplied or another compatible cable. A USB-C connector alone does not establish that the charger can provide the required USB Power Delivery profile.

Only one port combination causes the slowdown
The charger may have separate power groups or different priorities for its ports. Use the manufacturer’s table for that exact combination. Moving the laptop to a port with a higher assured or simultaneous-use rating can help only if the specification explicitly assigns that capacity.
The operating system displays “Slow Charger”
Treat the message as an indication that the delivered wattage is too low for the laptop’s model, not as a universal diagnosis of a defective battery or a particular charger brand. Follow the model-specific support instructions and compare delivered capacity with the manufacturer’s recommendation.

Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11- Required input: the laptop’s recommended charging wattage for its exact model.
- Simultaneous-use output: the wattage available on the laptop port while the other devices are connected.
- Capacity architecture: whether the relevant ports have assured capacity or share a capacity group.
- USB Power Delivery and cable compatibility: support for the power-delivery behavior and cable requirements specified by the laptop.
A charger with a larger total rating can still be a poor match if its laptop port drops below the required output when another port is occupied. Conversely, a lower-total charger can be suitable if its documented allocation gives the laptop enough power for your actual two-device combination.

USB-IF’s 240 W maximum illustrates why protocol capability and product capability must be separated: the existence of a high USB PD ceiling does not mean a particular charger or laptop reaches it. Check the product’s own technical specification.
Can one USB-C charger safely charge a laptop and a phone?
Yes, when the charger is designed for that combination and its simultaneous-use output meets the laptop’s requirement. USB Power Delivery is intended to let the powered device and source manage the supplied power. The practical question is not whether two devices can be plugged in physically, but whether the charger allocates enough power to the laptop while the phone is connected.
For a known charger, follow its documented port-allocation guidance. For an unknown charger, do not infer behavior from the number of ports, the USB-C shape, or the total wattage printed on the casing.
What this explanation does not establish
There is no general statistic showing how often laptop charging slows with shared chargers or by how many watts it slows. The documented 17.5 W-per-device example belongs to Apple’s 35 W adapter and should not be presented as a universal split.
The available guidance also does not establish battery level, laptop workload, or temperature as causes of this specific shared-charger behavior. The reliable checks are the charger’s allocation, the laptop’s model-specific requirement, USB Power Delivery compatibility, and the cable.
Because the laptop, charger, cable, and second device are unspecified in this question, no exact wattage recommendation can apply to every reader. Use the documentation for each component and test the setup with the other device disconnected.
