A slow iPhone charge does not automatically mean the phone or accessory is defective. The usual causes are limited output from an adapter, computer, car socket or hub; a shared multiport connection; a mismatched or damaged cable; debris or moisture at the port; intensive use; heat; slower charging above about 80 percent; or wireless-charging limits.
Start with Settings > Battery and look for a Slow Charger or Incompatible Charger message where your iOS version supports it. Then compare a direct wall-outlet connection using a model-compatible cable and USB-C Power Delivery adapter. Disconnect hubs and other devices, inspect the cable and port, stop demanding tasks, let the phone cool, and retest with a known-good charger. That sequence separates a normal charging limit from an accessory or hardware problem without buying replacements unnecessarily.

Why is my iPhone charging so slowly?
Charging speed is determined by the whole charging path: the power source, its available output, the cable and connectors, the iPhone model, the phone’s temperature, what the phone is doing while connected, and the battery’s current level. The largest wattage printed on an adapter is not a guaranteed charge time because the iPhone controls how much power it accepts and may reduce that amount for safety or battery longevity.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Apple says a wired charger providing 7.5 watts or less can take longer than expected. For wireless charging, a charger providing less than 10 W, including Qi1-class chargers, may also be slower. A computer port, car socket, hub or multiport adapter can provide less power than a dedicated wall adapter, particularly when other devices are drawing from the same supply. See Apple’s current About iPhone charge speeds guidance for the model and setup you are using.

The practical question is therefore not “Is this cable bad?” but “Which part of this setup is limiting power?” The checks below identify that limit in a few minutes.
How to make an iPhone charging test that tells you something
- Check the Battery screen. Open Settings > Battery. On supported versions, iOS 18 can display Slow Charger when a higher-wattage charger could improve charging. iOS 26 can display Incompatible Charger when the connected charger is not charging. Apple can change the wording or availability of these notices as iOS changes.
- Use a wall outlet directly. For the comparison, remove the computer, car socket, active hub and multiport adapter. Connect a suitable USB-C Power Delivery adapter to the wall and use the cable connector appropriate for your iPhone generation.
- Remove competing loads. Unplug other devices from a multiport charger. During a wireless test, disconnect any wired USB-C or Lightning accessory from the iPhone because that combination limits wireless charging to 7.5 W.
- Stop high-load activity. Lock the screen and pause games, camera recording, high-quality video streaming and other processor- or graphics-intensive work while you compare charging behavior.
- Inspect the path. Look for fraying, exposed conductors, bent adapter prongs or a plug that does not fit firmly. Check the iPhone port for visible debris. If liquid may be present, do not insert the cable.
- Repeat with known-good equipment. Use a compatible cable and adapter that are known to charge another device normally. If charging is still unusually poor, or the port appears damaged, arrange help through Apple’s charging troubleshooting guidance and service channels.
This controlled comparison is more useful than switching several accessories at once: it changes one likely bottleneck at a time.
Why does my iPhone say Slow Charger?
The message means the connected power source can charge the iPhone but is supplying less power than a higher-output option could provide. It is not, by itself, a failure warning. A low-output USB port, a shared charger, a long or damaged cable, or an adapter that is not negotiating USB-C Power Delivery can all produce this result.

Is the cable wrong for my iPhone generation?
A cable can fit physically and still be a poor choice for the charging setup. Match the connector to the model before judging the accessory.
| iPhone generation | Cable for Apple’s faster wired setup | Common mismatch |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 15 models and later | USB-C cable with a USB-C Power Delivery charger | Using a USB-A supply, an unfit cable or a non-PD path can reduce available power |
| iPhone 14 models and earlier | USB-C to Lightning cable with a USB-C Power Delivery charger | Assuming a USB-C phone cable is interchangeable with a Lightning iPhone |
Examine the insulation, strain relief and connectors for cuts, kinks, exposed wire, corrosion or bent parts. A plug should seat fully without wobbling. Stop using visibly damaged accessories. If iOS reports an unsupported accessory, Apple’s recommended sequence is to connect directly without intervening adapters or equipment, clear debris from the port, restart the iPhone, try another cable or charger, and update iOS. The full procedure is in If your iPhone or iPod touch won’t charge.
Could the iPhone port be dirty, wet or damaged?
Lint and other debris can prevent the connector from seating completely, creating intermittent charging or a low-power connection. Apple recommends removing debris from the charging port and plugging the cable in firmly. The cited guidance does not prescribe metal tools or liquid cleaners, so do not push metal objects into the port or pour liquid into it.
If liquid may be in the port, leave the cable unplugged. Charging a wet connector can damage the contacts. After the port is visibly clear and dry, test with the known-good cable and wall adapter from the diagnostic sequence. If the plug remains loose, charging cuts in and out, or inspection suggests physical damage, stop treating the issue as an accessory problem and contact Apple Support or arrange service. Apple’s troubleshooting instructions are at https://support.apple.com/en-gb/108805.
Can phone use and heat make charging slow?
Yes. Games, camera recording, high-quality video streaming, demanding apps and full display brightness consume power while the charger is trying to refill the battery. The net increase can therefore look very small even when the charger is working normally. Lock the screen and pause intensive work during the test; this is a diagnostic step, not a requirement that you never use the phone while it charges.

Temperature is another control. Apple says, “Your iPhone might put charging on hold temporarily while in extreme temperature conditions.” Move a hot phone and its charger to a cooler location and allow the battery to return to its normal operating range. Apple also states that fast charging might not work when conditions are too cold or too hot. Do not cover a hot phone with clothing or place it against a heat source to force a faster charge. See Apple’s fast-charge guidance for the stated thermal caveat.

Why does my iPhone stop charging at 80 percent?
Charging commonly becomes slower after about 80 percent. Apple’s battery guidance describes faster charging up to approximately 80 percent and slower charging afterward, reducing stress and heat as the battery approaches full. A pause or limit around this point can therefore be normal rather than evidence of a failed cable.
Heat can restrict charging above or below that level, and an iPhone 15 model or later may have a configured charge limit. If the phone repeatedly remains at 80 percent, check Settings > Battery for charging-limit or battery-optimization settings and review the temperature conditions. Do not disable a protective feature merely to chase a short-term speed increase. Apple’s battery behavior explanation is in Charge the iPhone battery.
Why is wireless charging slower than expected?
Wireless charging has more variables than a direct cable connection: the charger standard, adapter feeding the pad, alignment, case or objects between the phone and pad, temperature, and whether another accessory is connected. Apple recommends a MagSafe Charger or a Qi2-certified wireless charger for faster wireless charging. A wireless charger under 10 W, such as a Qi1-class charger, may take longer than expected.
Apple specifies these model and adapter combinations for wireless fast charging:

| iPhone models | Wireless setup Apple specifies | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 16 and later | MagSafe Charger with a 30 W or greater USB-C adapter | Use the stated adapter capacity and keep the phone correctly aligned |
| iPhone 15 and earlier | MagSafe with a 20 W or greater adapter; up to 15 W wireless charging | Actual behavior varies with settings and conditions |
| Any compatible model using a Qi1-class pad | Wireless charging below 10 W can take longer | Consider Qi2 or MagSafe when faster wireless charging matters |
Connecting a USB-C or Lightning accessory to the iPhone while it is on a wireless charger limits wireless charging to 7.5 W. Power-pass-through adapters can reserve power for their other ports, so test the pad with a direct, adequate adapter rather than assuming the pad itself is defective. Apple’s complete charge-speed details are at https://support.apple.com/en-us/120619.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How fast should an iPhone charge?
Apple’s fast-charge claims are conditional, not guarantees for every phone, cable, battery level or environment. Apple says iPhone 8 or later can charge to up to 50 percent in around 30 minutes with the specified fast-charge setup. Apple also says iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max can reach up to 50 percent in around 20 minutes with a 40 W adapter or higher.
Those figures come from Apple’s published testing, not an independent comparative study. The fast-charge page says testing included preproduction iPhone 17e units, software, a USB-C Charge Cable and Apple 20 W USB-C Power Adapter Model A2305 in January 2026, and preproduction iPhone 17-family and iPhone Air units with identified adapters and MagSafe chargers in July 2025. Apple states that settings and environmental factors affect charge time and that actual results vary. Read the conditions at https://support.apple.com/en-la/102574 before comparing your result with an advertised figure.
What to do when an accessory alert appears
An accessory warning can result from an unsupported, damaged, poorly connected or obstructed charging path. Follow this order rather than repeatedly reconnecting the same setup:
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Disconnect the accessory and connect the iPhone directly to the charger, without a hub, adapter chain or other intervening equipment.
- Check the port for debris and the cable and adapter for damage. Keep the cable out if liquid may be present.
- Restart the iPhone, then reconnect the direct setup.
- Try a different compatible cable and charger that are known to work.
- Install available iOS updates.
- If the warning or poor charging persists, use Apple’s service options instead of continuing to use a damaged accessory.
These steps follow Apple’s troubleshooting sequence in If your iPhone or iPod touch won’t charge. An alert that disappears with another cable points toward the original accessory; an alert that follows the phone across known-good equipment points toward the phone, port or software and merits support.

Which accessory should you replace?
Replace an accessory only when inspection or substitution gives you a reason. The most relevant wired category is a USB-C Power Delivery charger for iPhone, paired with the correct model-specific cable: USB-C for iPhone 15 and later, or USB-C to Lightning for iPhone 14 and earlier. A damaged cable or adapter should be replaced rather than repaired with tape or used intermittently.
For wireless charging, choose a MagSafe Charger or Qi2-certified wireless charger when your priority is a faster, more predictable wireless setup. Confirm the adapter requirement for your iPhone generation before buying. Neither a larger wattage label nor an app can repair a loose port, bypass thermal limits or guarantee a particular charge time.
Keep the existing accessory if it passes the direct-wall and known-good comparisons, the cable is undamaged, the port is clean and the phone charges normally when cool and idle. In that case, slower behavior in a car, hub, computer port, shared charger or near-full battery is an expected limitation of that situation rather than a reason to replace everything.

When should you seek service?
- The iPhone will not charge with more than one known-good, model-compatible cable and adapter.
- The connector is loose, the port looks physically damaged, or charging stops when the plug is gently left undisturbed.
- The phone repeatedly reports an incompatible charger after direct connections, a restart and another cable.
- Charging pauses or fails after the phone has cooled and the port is dry.
- The iPhone remains unable to power on after Apple’s prescribed charging steps.
Use Apple’s support and service process rather than assuming a port replacement is necessary. The official troubleshooting page is https://support.apple.com/en-gb/108805.
