If internet access fails, first find out whether the problem affects one device, your home Wi-Fi, or the broadband connection itself. Try another device on the same network, check the router and modem connections, then compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet if possible. These checks can narrow the cause before you reset settings, buy equipment, or call your provider.
What “connected to Wi-Fi, no internet” actually means
Wi-Fi connects a device to your local router; it does not prove that the router can reach the internet. A device may join the wireless network while web pages and apps still fail because of a device setting, local network configuration, router problem, modem or fiber connection issue, or provider outage. Microsoft describes this as being connected to Wi-Fi without an internet connection.

Think of the connection as a chain: your device connects to the router, the router connects through a modem or fiber terminal, and that equipment connects to your provider. A break anywhere in that chain can look like “the internet is down.”
Identify the pattern before changing settings
| What you notice | Most useful first clue |
|---|---|
| Only one phone or computer cannot get online | Other devices work on the same network; investigate the affected device. |
| Several devices fail on Wi-Fi | Check shared equipment, Wi-Fi, and provider service. |
| Wi-Fi fails but Ethernet works | The wireless or router path is more suspect than the broadband line. |
| Devices fail on both Wi-Fi and Ethernet | Check the modem or fiber terminal, provider status, and possible line fault. |
| Service is slow or drops at certain times or in certain rooms | Compare wired and wireless results; distance, walls, interference, device limits, and competing traffic can affect Wi-Fi. |
| One app or website fails while others work | The issue may be limited to that service rather than the whole connection. |
These are clues, not guarantees: a device can have a local configuration problem even when other devices work, and a provider fault can be intermittent.

Work through the checks in order
- Define the failure. Note whether service is fully down, slow, intermittent, or limited to one app or site. Record any message such as “connected, no internet” and when the problem began.
- Compare devices. Try a second phone or computer on the same Wi-Fi. If it works, focus on the affected device; if several fail, investigate shared equipment or the service. Microsoft recommends this comparison when diagnosing Windows Wi-Fi problems.
- Inspect power and connections. Check that the router and modem are powered and that their cables are seated. For fiber broadband, check the ONT—the fiber terminal that the router connects to—as well as the router. Consider recent changes such as moving equipment, installing an update, or changing network settings.
- Restart equipment and devices. Follow your provider’s preferred restart sequence if it gives one. Microsoft’s guidance says to unplug the modem and router, wait about 30 seconds, reconnect them, and allow them time to restart and reconnect; then restart the affected device. Ofcom also recommends rebooting relevant router, mesh or booster, ONT, and client equipment.
- Check your provider’s status information. Look at the service-status page or app, or call support. If no outage is listed but the connection is still failing, report the fault rather than assuming the status page has identified every local problem.
- Try Ethernet, if available. Connect a computer directly to the router with an Ethernet cable and test again. Confirm the computer has an Ethernet port or suitable adapter, and use a cable rated for the speed you are checking. If wired access works while Wi-Fi does not, concentrate on wireless coverage or router settings. If wired and wireless both fail across devices, the modem, fiber terminal, provider, or line deserves attention.
- For a slow connection, measure more than once. Run several speed checks at different times and, if practical, compare Wi-Fi near the router with Ethernet. A single slow Wi-Fi result cannot establish that the broadband line is faulty. Download speed is not the only consideration for video calls and gaming: delay or lag can matter too.
- Give support a useful fault report. Tell the provider when the problem started, whether it is constant or intermittent, which devices are affected, whether Ethernet works, and what you have already checked. Keep a record of interruption times and ask about likely repair timing, any equipment or engineer charges, and options for staying connected if the service is essential.
When one device is the only one affected
Start with that device’s Wi-Fi state and restart it. Check whether a recent update or settings change coincides with the problem. If it is a Windows PC, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance includes checking whether it received an IP address, renewing its IP configuration, flushing DNS, reviewing proxy settings, and testing whether it can reach the router. The exact menus and steps differ by operating system and device.
On Windows, an address beginning with 169.254.x.x can mean the computer did not obtain an address from the router, assuming the device is not intentionally configured with a static address. This points toward a local addressing problem, but it does not by itself identify the cause.

If a Windows adapter problem appears after an update, investigate the driver before removing it. Microsoft advises having a backup driver available before uninstalling a network adapter driver. Use a network reset only as a last resort: it removes network adapters and resets their settings, and VPN or virtual-switch software may need to be set up again afterward.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen Wi-Fi is weak, slow, or unreliable
Wireless performance can be affected by distance from the router, walls, router placement, interference, the device being tested, and other traffic on the network. Test near the router and compare with Ethernet before concluding the broadband service is at fault.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
A mesh system or booster may help when evidence points to weak coverage in parts of the home. A replacement router makes sense only when the existing equipment is implicated—for example, it is old or cannot provide the needed performance. These purchases cost money and cannot repair a provider outage or damaged outside line; mesh placement also matters, and adding devices does not automatically improve performance. Check provider compatibility and support before replacing provider-supplied equipment.
When the modem, fiber connection, or provider is more likely
If multiple devices cannot get online over both Wi-Fi and Ethernet, check the equipment lights and connections, then consult your provider’s status information. On a fiber connection, include the ONT in the checks. If no outage is shown, contact the provider with the symptoms and wired-test result; they can investigate service or line faults that you cannot diagnose from the home network alone.

Keep security fixes separate from outage fixes
Changing security settings is not a first-line remedy for an ordinary connection failure. Once access is restored, the FTC recommends using WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal encryption, unique administrative and Wi-Fi passwords, and current router software. It also advises reviewing remote management, WPS, and UPnP settings. Router menus and available controls vary; disabling a feature should not be treated as a way to restore a failed broadband line.

UK compensation and complaint routes are not universal
Ofcom’s guidance applies to UK consumers. For providers participating in its automatic compensation scheme, one qualifying situation is a reported loss of service that remains unfixed after two full working days. Eligibility depends on the provider’s participation and scheme conditions. Do not apply that timeframe or UK escalation route to another country; check the rules that apply where you live.
