Expensive headphones can sound thin, harsh, quiet or strangely bass-light for reasons that have little to do with price. Start with the physical seal and pads, then determine whether the headphone’s tuning suits you, check impedance and source output, and only then consider EQ, replacement parts or an amplifier. This order prevents buying electronics to solve a fit problem—or trying EQ to compensate for a failing cable.
1. Check the seal before changing electronics
A leak between the earcup and your head can remove far more bass than a modest difference between DACs or amplifiers. Glasses, hair, hat bands and uneven pad compression can all break the seal. In-ear models are especially sensitive: RTINGS notes that without a tight seal, nearly all low-end can vanish, leaving the headphones quiet and hollow.

Reseat the headphones
- Place each cup fully around the ear rather than partly on the ear.
- Move hair, glasses arms and clothing away from the pad’s contact area.
- Play a familiar track with steady bass and gently press the cups toward your head. If bass increases substantially, the problem is physical fit.
- For in-ear headphones, try every supplied tip size and insert the earpieces consistently. A tip that is too small commonly leaks.
Inspect and maintain the pads
Flattened foam, torn coverings, skin oil and debris can prevent a consistent seal. Clean pads using the manufacturer’s instructions. Audeze advises keeping pads and your head clean and putting earcups on slowly so pressure equalizes naturally. Replace pads when compression or damage keeps the cups from sealing; choose pads made for the exact model because shape and material alter both comfort and bass.

2. Determine whether the sound is tuning or a fault
Frequency-response range only describes the frequencies a headphone can reproduce. It does not tell you whether its balance will sound neutral or pleasant to you. A headphone may be working exactly as designed while emphasizing treble, recessing vocals or reducing mid-bass.

Use a controlled comparison
- Choose a recording you know well and listen at matched loudness.
- Try the headphone from another known-good source, or compare it with another headphone on the same source.
- Check that left and right channels remain equally loud and that the character does not change when the cable moves.
If the same tonal character remains across sources and both channels are balanced, the likely issue is a tuning preference rather than a defective amplifier. If one channel cuts out, crackles or changes when the connector moves, investigate the cable, plug and jack before judging the headphone.
3. Check impedance, sensitivity and available drive
Impedance is measured in ohms (Ω) and indicates how difficult a headphone is to drive. Sennheiser Hearing’s 2026 guidance places 150–300 Ω models in the high-end and studio category and says a dedicated amplifier can improve volume and sound quality. High-impedance headphones generally require more voltage than low-impedance models.

Do not assume an amplifier is required solely because a model has a large impedance number. If your source reaches a clean listening level with usable headroom and no audible artifacts, more power may not change the tonal balance.

4. Check the source’s output impedance
Output impedance is separate from the headphone’s impedance. When a headphone’s impedance curve changes across frequencies, a high-output-impedance source can change the voltage delivered at those frequencies and therefore change the sound. Sonarworks reported examples ranging from completely inaudible (1 dB maximum) to 7 dB maximum frequency-response distortion in worst cases in its 2021 discussion.

A common compatibility guideline cited by SoundGuys is to keep amplifier output impedance below one eighth of the headphone’s impedance. Treat that as a design check, not a guarantee that you will prefer the result: headphone impedance can vary with frequency, and personal preference still determines the final choice. Low-impedance, high-sensitivity headphones are often the most vulnerable to audible interaction with a source that has excessive output impedance.
5. Use EQ for a tonal mismatch
Once fit, pads, cables and source operation are confirmed, EQ is the direct tool for a headphone that is consistently too bright, recessed or bass-light. A measured correction profile can reduce a treble peak or add controlled low-end without replacing hardware.

A more expensive DAC generally will not correct an unwanted tonal balance. Headphones.com distinguishes tonal tuning from source limitations; a source upgrade is relevant mainly when output-impedance interaction or an intentional source boost is involved. Apply EQ with headroom (for example, reduce the preamp before adding bass) so boosted bands do not clip, and compare with EQ bypassed at the same loudness.
6. When an amplifier is the appropriate fix
A dedicated amplifier makes sense when the source cannot provide adequate voltage or clean headroom, or when it exhibits the distortion, noise, limited response or channel-separation problems described by beyerdynamic. For a 150–300 Ω headphone, verify the amplifier’s power and output-impedance specifications against the exact model rather than relying on a generic “high-power” claim.

What an amplifier will not do
- It will not repair a torn or compressed pad.
- It will not make a headphone’s inherent treble emphasis neutral.
- It will not fix a loose connector or intermittent cable.
- It will not automatically improve a headphone that already reaches clean volume from its current source.
7. Repair or replace only after diagnosis

The practical sequence is simple: seal first, hardware condition second, tuning third, source compatibility fourth, and amplification last. That sequence identifies whether the underwhelming sound comes from your head-and-headphone interface, the headphone’s intended voicing, or a real electrical limitation.
