If an HDMI monitor or TV is limited to a lower resolution or refresh rate, the restriction is usually somewhere in the complete signal path: the computer or graphics processor, the display’s selected HDMI input, the cable, an adapter or dock, another display sharing the connection, or an operating-system setting. A newer cable alone cannot overcome a port or device that lacks the required mode.
Diagnose the path in order, starting with the mode Windows is actually using and ending with a direct-connection test. This identifies whether you need a setting change, a different port, a capable cable, or a replacement adapter.

What determines your HDMI resolution and refresh rate?
Every link in the chain must support the mode you want:

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- The computer’s graphics processor and physical output must be able to generate the resolution, refresh rate, color depth, chroma format and HDR combination.
- The display must support that combination on the specific HDMI input you selected. A television can have inputs with different capabilities.
- The cable must carry the signal reliably at the required bandwidth.
- Any USB-C-to-HDMI adapter, dock, receiver, KVM switch or other intermediary adds its own ceiling.
- The operating system must expose and select a mode that the whole path can negotiate.
The weakest link sets the maximum. HDMI version numbers are useful clues, but they do not prove that every feature in a specification is implemented on a particular port.

First check what Windows is actually using
- Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
- Select the HDMI monitor or TV from the display selector.
- Record the active desktop resolution and refresh rate.
- Open the refresh-rate menu and note every offered value. Windows marks rates that do not support the current resolution with an asterisk. Choosing one of those rates changes the resolution to reach that refresh rate, so do not treat the asterisked value as a free upgrade.
- Apply a mode, then confirm the resulting resolution and refresh rate in the same panel.
If the desired value is absent, the limitation is normally reported by the hardware path rather than hidden in a Windows toggle. If it is present but marked with an asterisk, decide whether the associated resolution change is acceptable before selecting it.
Check the simple physical and input causes
Select the HDMI input that is really connected
Use the display’s input control to select the numbered HDMI socket where the cable is plugged in. TVs and monitors can remember a different input from the one used last, and different sockets may support different formats. Windows should also show the expected display under Settings > System > Display; a generic or missing entry indicates a detection problem to solve before tuning refresh rates.
Reseat both ends
Turn off the display, remove and firmly reconnect the cable at the computer (or dock) and at the display, then power the display back on. Inspect for a damaged connector, a cable that is under tension, or a loose dock connection. If possible, test another known-good cable without changing any other part of the setup.
Check the display’s own menu
Some monitors have an input setting such as an enhanced, high-bandwidth or compatibility mode. The exact label is model-specific; consult the display manual and make sure the HDMI input is not forced into a legacy mode.

Compare every component’s stated capability
Look up the exact model numbers, not just the HDMI version printed on a package. Compare the required resolution, refresh rate and image options as a set.
| Part of the path | What to verify | Typical limiting symptom |
|---|---|---|
| Computer or GPU output | Maximum resolution and refresh rate for that physical output, including HDR, color depth and chroma combinations | The desired mode never appears even with a direct connection |
| Display and HDMI input | Supported modes for the exact input; whether inputs differ; whether a setting enables enhanced bandwidth | One HDMI socket offers a higher mode than another, or the display falls back after input changes |
| Cable | Official cable category and certification marking appropriate for the target bandwidth | Intermittent black screens, sparkles, dropouts or a mode that disappears when bandwidth rises |
| Adapter, dock, receiver or KVM | Model-specific maximum resolution and refresh rate, number of displays supported, and host-port requirements | Direct connection works but the docked path is capped |
| Other attached displays | Combined limits imposed by the computer, dock or adapter when displays run concurrently | Each display works alone, but one or both are reduced when all are connected |
Record the exact specifications before buying anything. A port described as HDMI 2.1, for example, does not by itself establish the supported mode, color format or bandwidth on your particular device.
Bypass adapters and docks to isolate the bottleneck
A direct source-to-display connection is the fastest diagnostic test. Disconnect the USB-C adapter, dock, AV receiver, KVM or extension and connect the computer’s HDMI output straight to the display, if the computer has one.
- If the direct path exposes the desired mode, the intermediary is the constraint. Check its model documentation for per-port limits, host-port requirements and maximums when more than one display is attached.
- If the direct path is still limited, compare the computer output, display input and cable specifications instead of replacing the dock.
- If the computer has only USB-C video output, verify that the particular USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode or another video mode required by the adapter. USB-C shape alone does not guarantee video output.
Docks can have different limits by model and by the number of connected screens. A dock that drives one display at a high mode may offer a lower mode when a second display is active. The same trade-off applies to some adapters and host systems.

Test multiple-display bandwidth and host limits
- Temporarily disconnect every other external display.
- Restart or re-detect the remaining display, then check Advanced display again.
- If the target mode appears, reconnect the other screens one at a time.
- When the limit returns, lower the resolution or refresh rate of the other display, or move one screen to a separate output path.
Some systems share bandwidth or display-engine resources across outputs. Lowering one display’s mode can make a higher mode available on another; this is a design limit, not evidence that the first monitor is defective.
Understand cable categories and bandwidth
Cable labels describe tested capabilities, not a guarantee that the rest of the system supports them.
| Cable or specification | Capability stated by the HDMI organizations | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Standard HDMI cable | Tested for earlier formats such as 720p and 1080i | May be insufficient for newer high-bandwidth modes |
| High Speed HDMI cable | Up to 10.2 Gbps; designed for 1080p and beyond, including 4K at 30 Hz | Appropriate only when the complete path’s required mode fits within that capability |
| HDMI 1.4b formats | 3840×2160 at 24, 25 and 30 Hz; 1920×1080 at 120 Hz among listed formats | 4K high-refresh operation is not implied by HDMI 1.4b |
| Ultra High Speed HDMI cable | For configurations up to 48 Gbps under HDMI 2.1b | Used for demanding modes such as 4K at 120 Hz when the source, display and intermediaries also support them |
| Ultra96 cable | Up to 96 Gbps for HDMI 2.2 systems | Relevant only when the connected HDMI 2.2 devices require capacity above 48 Gbps |
HDMI Licensing Administrator guidance distinguishes Standard and High Speed cables by tested performance, while HDMI 2.1b identifies Ultra High Speed for up to 48 Gbps. HDMI Forum’s HDMI 2.2 overview, released in 2025, describes up to 96 Gbps and the Ultra96 cable designation. These are interface ceilings, not a promise that your computer or display implements every listed format.
As HDMI Forum president Chandlee Harrell explained on June 25, 2025, “the introduction of the new Ultra96 feature name will help consumers and end-users ensure their product’s maximum bandwidth is supported.” The label helps identify a cable’s tested class; it does not upgrade a lower-capability source or input.

Account for HDR and color settings
HDR, higher bit depth and less compressed chroma can increase the data required for a given resolution and refresh rate. A path that handles 4K at 60 Hz in standard dynamic range may not handle the same refresh rate with HDR enabled.
- Update the graphics driver through Windows Update or the computer manufacturer’s support channel.
- Turn HDR off temporarily and check whether the desired resolution and refresh rate become available.
- If the image has incorrect colors, flickers or loses signal, try a lower refresh rate or resolution as a diagnostic step.
- Once stable, raise one setting at a time and test again.
Keep the mode that meets your actual need. A slightly lower refresh rate with correct HDR and color can be preferable to an unstable maximum mode.
Choose a replacement cable only after identifying the requirement
Buy according to the target mode and the full path:

- For a system that needs no more than 10.2 Gbps-class operation, a compliant High Speed cable may be sufficient.
- For a source and display that genuinely require up to 48 Gbps, choose a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable and confirm that every intermediate device is rated for the same mode.
- Consider an Ultra96 cable only for a system with HDMI 2.2 hardware that actually needs bandwidth above 48 Gbps.
- Prefer packaging or jacket markings that use the official cable names and certification labels rather than vague claims such as “8K ready.”
A cable replacement cannot fix a graphics output, display input or dock that is capped below the requested mode. Conversely, an inadequate cable can prevent a capable system from maintaining a high-bandwidth signal, so both sides of the path must be checked.

Common symptoms and the most useful next test
| Symptom | Next test |
|---|---|
| Only low resolutions are listed | Check the selected input, direct-connect the display, and verify the GPU output specification |
| High refresh appears only with an asterisk | Read the resolution Windows will change to before applying it |
| Mode works with one display but not two | Disconnect the second display, then lower its mode or check dock limits |
| Black screen or sparkles at the highest mode | Reseat or replace the cable with the appropriate certified category, then retest |
| HDR causes color problems | Update the graphics driver and test a lower refresh rate or resolution |
| Direct HDMI works but docked HDMI does not | Check the dock or adapter’s exact model limits and host-port requirements |
When replacing hardware is justified
Replace a cable when it is damaged, lacks the category required by the target mode, or fails a direct-connection test while another appropriate cable works. Replace an adapter or dock only after its published limits are below your requirement and a direct path confirms that it is the bottleneck. Replace neither solely because a package says HDMI 2.1 or because a newer cable is available.
Keep a written record of the successful combination: computer output, display input, cable category, intermediary model, resolution, refresh rate and HDR state. That record prevents a later port change or second monitor from recreating the problem.
Bottom line
Start with Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, verify the selected input and cable seating, compare the exact capabilities of every device, and test a direct connection with other displays disconnected. Only after those checks should you buy a certified cable or replace an adapter. The maximum HDMI mode belongs to the entire path, not to the cable label alone.
