The problem may be the file’s actual structure, missing animation frames, an incorrect content type during delivery, or the app receiving it. A .gif filename alone cannot tell you which layer failed.
Start by checking what is actually in the file
A GIF is a structured raster file, not just an image with a particular filename ending. GIF89a includes a header, logical screen descriptor, image data, and a trailer. Renaming another kind of file to .gif does not convert its contents. The National Archives describes GIF’s structure and its use of lossless LZW compression in its GIF format record.

- Check the file’s signature and structure with a format-aware validator or inspector; do not rely on its extension alone.
- Confirm the file has a valid beginning and trailer. If either is missing or the structure is malformed, the file itself may be incomplete or damaged.
- Open it in a second known image viewer. If it works there but fails in the intended app or site, investigate that destination and the way the file is delivered.
This separates a malformed or mislabeled file from a file that is valid but mishandled somewhere else.

Why does my GIF look like a still image?
Animation is stored as multiple images and control data within one GIF file, not as a property guaranteed by the filename. The Library of Congress describes GIF89a animations as multiple images with control data in one file: its format description was last significantly updated on 2024-05-07.

- Inspect the GIF’s frame count. If it contains only one image, it cannot play as a multi-frame animation.
- If it has multiple frames, test it in the application where the failure occurs. A viewer may display the first image but not play the animation as expected.
- Compare behavior in a second viewer that supports GIF animation. If that viewer animates it, focus on the original destination’s handling rather than assuming the export is defective.
Frame count and playback behavior are different checks: multiple images establish that animation data is present, but the receiving application still has to handle it.
Why won’t my GIF upload or display on a website?
Check both the filename and the type sent with the file. GIF’s documented MIME type is image/gif. Microsoft’s Windows Imaging Component overview lists .gif as the extension and image/gif as the MIME type for its native codec: Microsoft Learn: GIF format overview.

- Inspect the served content type in the browser’s network tools or the server configuration. For a GIF, it should be
image/gif. - Verify that the bytes are actually GIF data; changing a filename or setting a MIME type does not repair a file in another format.
- Test the same file in the destination application or website. Upload validation, decoding, and display happen at the receiving end, so success in a local viewer does not prove the destination will handle it identically.
On the web, major browsers broadly support GIF, but that does not guarantee every upload workflow or application will accept, decode, or animate a particular file. MDN’s image format guide covers browser format support; verify the actual destination when troubleshooting.

When a GIF displays but looks poor
A visual compromise is not by itself evidence of a broken container. GIF supports a palette of up to 256 colors and transparency based on a designated color. Those limits can produce banding, rough edges, or unwanted-looking transparent areas, especially in images with smooth gradients or detailed transparency. The National Archives describes GIF’s color and transparency support in its format record; MDN also explains its indexed-color and transparency limits in the image format guide.

If the file opens but the image looks different from the source, distinguish those palette and transparency limits from structural corruption before blaming the exporter.

These checks diagnose different layers; passing one does not establish that the others are working. Without the specific file and destination, the cause of an individual failure cannot be determined. Call the exporter “fine” only after the file has been validated and the failure reproduced in its receiving context.
