Find My updates an AirTag or compatible third-party item when it connects to the Find My network. Until that happens, the app may show the last place and time it was detected. Check the item’s status and timestamp first, restore your iPhone’s Bluetooth, Location Services, account and data connection, then distinguish a nearby-finding problem from a network-update problem. Battery, reset and repair steps depend on whether the item is an AirTag or a particular third-party card.
What a stale Find My location actually means
Find My is not a continuous live-tracking display for a wallet item. Apple describes the process this way: “The item’s location is updated when it connects to the Find My network.” An AirTag or registered Find My accessory can therefore remain on an older map position while it is out of range of your devices or has not yet been detected by another participating Apple device.

The pin represents the most recent report that reached Apple’s Find My service. It does not prove that the tracker is still at that spot, and it does not prove that the tracker has failed. Read the time shown beneath the item’s name before taking any hardware action.

Find My can retain a last-known location for up to seven days. Apple’s wording is precise: “If more than seven days have passed since your device last sent its location to Apple through the Find My network, Find My can’t display a location.” That seven-day rule concerns how long a location can be displayed; it is not a promised refresh interval.

Step 1: Check the item’s status, timestamp and alert setting
- Open Find My on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap Items, then select the wallet tracker.
- Read the status under its name and note the date and time of the last report.
- Compare that time with where you believe the wallet was. A map pin is only the last network report, not a live confirmation.
- If the item cannot currently be located, choose Notify When Found, when that option is available.
- Allow Find My notifications in iOS so the alert can reach you. Without notification permission, the item can be found later without producing the expected alert on your phone.
If the timestamp is only a few minutes old, waiting for another network connection may be more sensible than changing settings. If it is hours or days old, continue with the phone checks below and then investigate the tracker’s power system.
Step 2: Restore the iPhone or iPad prerequisites
These checks address setup and connectivity on the device managing the item. They cannot force a distant tracker to transmit; the item still has to connect to the Find My network.
Install the latest available iOS or iPadOS update
Open Settings > General > Software Update and install the latest version offered for your device. Apple’s support guidance specifically recommends updating when items do not appear correctly. Compatibility requirements can change between AirTag generations and operating-system releases, so use Apple’s current AirTag documentation for the exact minimum version rather than relying on an old number copied from an earlier guide.
Turn on Bluetooth
Go to Settings > Bluetooth and make sure Bluetooth is enabled. Bluetooth is used for local discovery and communication with a nearby item. Turning it on will not create a remote map update when the tracker is elsewhere, but leaving it off can prevent nearby actions and setup from working.
Check Location Services and Find My permission
Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. Turn on Location Services, then select Find My and allow location access. For the most accurate nearby experience, enable Precise Location for Find My when that switch is available. A disabled or approximate permission can interfere with directions, nearby finding and location sharing from the phone.

Resolve Apple Account or iCloud prompts
Look in Settings for any request to finish Apple Account setup, accept updated terms or address an iCloud sync problem. Complete those prompts and confirm that iCloud data is not paused. An incomplete account setup can leave Find My items from appearing or syncing normally even when Bluetooth is working.
Use a reliable internet connection
Connect to a dependable Wi-Fi network or enable mobile data. Find My needs an internet path to retrieve and upload status information. If other apps also fail to load, fix the connection first; changing tracker settings while the phone is offline will not produce a new map report.
Restart the iPhone or iPad
After checking the settings, restart the device and open Find My again. Apple includes a restart in its AirTag setup troubleshooting because it can clear a temporary Bluetooth, account or synchronization fault. Recheck the item’s timestamp after the restart rather than assuming that a restart itself updated the tracker.
Step 3: Give the Find My network a chance to update the item
When the wallet is away from your iPhone, its location depends on a connection to the Find My network. Compatible Apple devices near the tracker can relay an encrypted location report, but the official guidance does not promise a fixed refresh interval. There may be a delay between the item moving and a new report appearing.
- Leave Notify When Found enabled if the item is missing.
- Keep Find My notifications allowed on the managing iPhone or iPad.
- Do not interpret an unchanged pin as proof that the wallet is still there.
- Do not promise yourself that walking around with your own phone will refresh a distant card; your phone must actually be close enough to communicate with it.
If the item was left in a sparsely populated area, inside a building with limited nearby Apple-device traffic, or in a location where radio signals are obstructed, a new report can take longer. That is a network-availability issue, not necessarily a failed tracker.

Step 4: Separate network location from nearby finding
Map updates and nearby precision finding are different features. A map location can be supplied by the Find My network even when your phone cannot guide you to the item at close range. Conversely, the map can be stale while a nearby item responds once you are close enough.
Requirements for Find Nearby or Precision Finding
- A supported iPhone with Ultra Wideband hardware.
- Find My location access enabled on that iPhone.
- The AirTag within practical Bluetooth and Ultra Wideband range.
- A relatively unobstructed path; walls, furniture and other objects can reduce performance.
If Find Nearby is missing, unavailable or inaccurate, check those requirements and move closer. The absence of Precision Finding does not by itself mean that the Find My network has stopped updating the item. It may simply mean your phone model does not support the feature, the item is out of range, or the environment is interfering with the signal.
Use sound when you are close
When Find My offers a sound control, play a sound and listen in quiet areas. Sound is a local search aid; it does not create a remote network report. A silent response can result from distance, a blocked speaker, a depleted or sealed power system, or the item not being reachable at that moment.
Step 5: Handle power and reset questions by tracker type
If the item is an AirTag
Apple lists battery replacement as a possible AirTag troubleshooting step. Follow the current AirTag instructions for opening the device, battery type and replacement procedure. Verify the exact battery compatibility in Apple’s documentation before buying a cell or attempting the change. After replacement, keep the AirTag near the iPhone and check whether it reconnects in Find My.
Do not treat an AirTag battery procedure as a general wallet-card repair. An AirTag in a separate holder and a thin wallet card can have completely different power designs.

If the item is a third-party wallet card
Identify the manufacturer and exact model before opening, charging or resetting anything. Apple supports third-party items that are explicitly registered to an Apple Account in Find My, but Apple does not publish one universal battery, firmware, reset or sealed-card procedure for every accessory.
- For a rechargeable card, follow the maker’s charging time, cable and indicator instructions.
- For a card with a replaceable battery, use only the specified battery and access method.
- For a sealed card, do not pry it open or apply AirTag battery steps; contact the manufacturer about service or replacement.
- Use the maker’s documented reset or firmware process, if one exists.
If the card remains absent after the iPhone checks and its documented power procedure, use the manufacturer’s support channel. Contact Apple Support for Apple Account, iOS or Find My service problems. There is no single reset sequence that is safe for every wallet tracker.

Old timestamp or “last located”
Find My has a previous report, but the item has not connected again since that report. The displayed place may be accurate for that earlier moment and wrong for the item’s current position.
“Offline”
Treat this as not currently reachable. Confirm Bluetooth, Location Services, Find My permission, account setup and internet access on your phone, then wait for the item to encounter the Find My network. Offline does not identify whether the cause is distance, obstruction, power or network availability.

After more than seven days without a location sent through the Find My network, Apple says Find My cannot display a location. At that point, check the tracker’s model-specific power and support instructions rather than repeatedly restarting the phone.

“Not sharing location • Online”
Apple documents this wording for an online device that cannot send its location, including a possible Location Services issue. It should not be assumed to describe every wallet tracker card. Apply the message to the device type shown in Find My and follow the relevant Apple or manufacturer guidance.
“Find Nearby” unavailable
Check Ultra Wideband support, Find My location permission and proximity to the AirTag. Walls and other objects can interfere. This message concerns nearby precision finding, not necessarily the broader Find My network.
When replacing the tracker makes sense
Replacement is reasonable only after you identify the card’s model and confirm that it is designed for Apple Find My. Before buying a replacement, verify each of these specifications on the current manufacturer page:

No universal price, card model or performance result can be assumed from Find My compatibility alone. Confirm the details for the exact model and region before purchasing.
A safe escalation checklist
- Record the item status and timestamp in Find My.
- Enable Notify When Found and Find My notifications.
- Update iOS or iPadOS, then verify Bluetooth, Location Services, Precise Location and Find My permission.
- Finish any Apple Account or iCloud prompts, connect to reliable Wi-Fi or mobile data and restart the device.
- Try sound or nearby finding only when you are physically close and the phone supports the required feature.
- Identify whether the tracker is an AirTag or a specific third-party card.
- Apply only that product’s documented battery, charging, reset and firmware instructions.
- Contact the card maker for hardware or sealed-battery problems, and Apple Support for account, operating-system or Find My service issues.
The practical diagnosis is usually one of three things: the map is showing a legitimate last-known report, the managing iPhone has a permission or connectivity problem, or the tracker needs model-specific power or hardware support. Treating all three as the same “Find My not updating” fault leads to unsafe resets and unnecessary replacements.
