Why Your FICO Score Differs Across Banks and Credit Monitoring Apps

Your FICO scores differ because the services may be using different score brands, credit bureaus, FICO model versions, or report dates. Compare those four details—and the underlying report data—before treating two numbers as inconsistent.

The short answer: the numbers may not be measuring the same thing

A score shown by a bank and one shown by a credit-monitoring app can both be accurate while being different. A FICO score is calculated from a particular credit bureau’s file when the score is requested. If another service uses a different bureau file, a different FICO version, a non-FICO model, or data from another date, the result is not an apples-to-apples comparison.

Start by recording the score brand, model and version, bureau, and score or report date for every number. Then compare the reports themselves. A missing account, a balance reported on one file but not another, or a payment status that has not yet updated can explain a difference without any scoring error.

Four details that determine whether scores are comparable

1. Score brand

“Credit score” is a generic label, not a model name. Some bank portals and monitoring services display a FICO score; others display a different scoring brand. Different models can assign different weights or interpret the same credit-file information differently. A number labeled only “credit score” cannot be compared reliably with a FICO score until you identify the brand.

Look for an explicit label such as “FICO Score.” If the service names another model, record that name rather than assuming it is interchangeable with FICO. A lender can also use a model that is not the one shown in your consumer account.

2. Credit bureau

FICO calculates scores from bureau data. Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion may not contain identical information because creditors and other data providers do not necessarily report to all three bureaus, or may report on different schedules. The bureaus can also record, store, or display the same account differently.

Two services using the same FICO version can therefore produce different results if one uses an Equifax file and the other uses an Experian or TransUnion file. FICO’s consumer FAQ says that when scores are significantly different across bureaus, the underlying bureau data is likely different and is driving the observed difference.

3. Model and version

FICO has multiple base models and industry-specific models. Lenders choose which version to use and when to adopt an update, so two lenders can evaluate the same borrower with different FICO versions. A general base score is not necessarily the score used for a vehicle loan or a credit-card decision.

FICO Score 10T is an example of why versions matter. It incorporates trended bureau data, examining a longer history of certain balances and limits instead of relying only on the most recently reported month. A score calculated with that model can differ from one calculated with a model that uses a shorter snapshot, even when both models use the same bureau.

4. Score and report date

Creditors send updates throughout the month. A monitoring app may show a score based on a report pulled before a recent balance or payment-status update, while a bank may have obtained a newer file. FICO advises comparing scores accessed at the same time. A date printed beside the score may be the calculation date, the report-refresh date, or both, so read the service’s explanation carefully.

Why the same account can look different at each bureau

Reporting coverage is not identical

There is no requirement that every information provider send every account update to all three nationwide bureaus at exactly the same moment. One bureau may receive a new balance first; another may not yet show the account at all. A lender’s internal data can also be newer than the data available to a consumer-facing service.

Storage and display can vary

The bureaus may organize account details, payment histories, limits, or status codes differently. Even when the underlying event is the same, a service’s display can make one file appear to contain more or less detail. Those differences can affect the inputs seen by a scoring model.

Updates can cross the services at different times

A creditor may report on a recurring cycle rather than immediately after every transaction. If you pay down a card between reporting cycles, one score may still reflect the earlier high balance. When the update reaches each bureau, the scores can move at different times rather than all changing on the same day.

Base, auto, and bankcard FICO scores are different products

A base FICO score is designed for broad credit-risk decisions. Industry-specific scores adapt the model to a lending purpose: an auto score can emphasize behaviors relevant to vehicle financing, while a bankcard score is designed for card decisions. The score shown in a general financial dashboard may therefore be a different product from the score a lender orders.

Even within one category, the version number matters. Lenders decide when to replace an older version, and adoption is not simultaneous. Ask a lender which bureau and FICO version it uses if you need to understand a particular application. The lender may also combine a score with income, debt, application information, and its own underwriting rules.

How to compare two scores step by step

  1. Write down the complete label. Record whether each number is FICO or another brand, the named model, and the version number if the service discloses it.
  2. Identify the bureau. Note Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion. If a service says “all three” but gives one score, check whether it is showing a selected bureau or a composite product.
  3. Capture both dates. Record the score date and the underlying report-refresh date when they are listed. Do not compare a newly pulled score with a dashboard that has not refreshed.
  4. Save the report details. Compare account lists, balances, credit limits, payment statuses, reported dates, inquiries, and public-record information where applicable.
  5. Align the comparison. The closest comparison uses the same brand, model and version, bureau, and pull date. If any of those differ, describe the numbers as different measurements rather than as a contradiction.
  6. Trace the largest input difference. A newly reported card balance, a late-payment status, a new account, or a missing account can have more effect than small display differences. Check which file contains the item and when it was reported.
  7. Investigate possible inaccuracies. If an account, balance, limit, or payment status is wrong, follow the dispute instructions for the bureau whose file contains the error. Keep copies of the report and supporting records. The exact process and timing depend on the bureau’s current instructions and applicable consumer guidance.
  8. Ask before applying. For a specific loan or card, ask the lender which score type, bureau, and version it normally uses. The lender is not required to use the score visible in your monitoring account.

A diagnostic table for common mismatches

What you observe Most likely explanation What to check next
One service says FICO and another says only “credit score” Different score brands or models Open each service’s score-details page and record the brand and model name.
Both say FICO, but the bureaus differ Different bureau files, reporting coverage, or update timing Compare the account list, balances, limits, and payment statuses on each bureau report.
The bureau and model match, but one score is older Different report-refresh dates Pull or refresh both scores on the same day before comparing.
A recent payment has changed one score only The creditor’s update reached one bureau first Check the “reported” date for the account and wait for the other file to update before judging the difference.
A lender’s result does not match an app score The lender used another FICO version, an industry score, another brand, or additional underwriting data Ask the lender which score type and bureau it used; do not assume the app’s number was the decision score.
An account or status appears incorrectly Potential bureau-file error Dispute the inaccurate item with the relevant bureau using its current official procedure.

What a monitoring app can—and cannot—tell you

A monitoring service is useful for observing changes and inspecting the file it receives. It can help you notice a new inquiry, a balance update, or a missing account. Its score is still a dated measurement tied to a stated model and bureau. A service that refreshes weekly is not necessarily showing the same information as a lender that pulls a file after your creditor reports.

Read the service’s disclosures for the bureau source, model name, version, and refresh schedule. If any field is omitted, treat that score as a general indicator rather than a precise preview of a lender’s number. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has described differences among scoring formulas, bureau data, and consumer versus creditor scores; its earlier analytical work and consumer explanations provide context, but they should not be read as a current description of every app’s product.

Why a lender’s score may still differ after you compare everything

Even after you align the brand, bureau, version, and date, a lender can produce another number. The lender may use a bureau-specific implementation, a different industry model, or an updated version that your consumer service does not offer. It may also evaluate information outside the score, such as income, debt obligations, requested amount, or its own eligibility rules.

That is why no consumer score can guarantee a future approval, interest rate, or exact lender score. Matching the lender’s model and bureau is the best way to reduce surprises, but underwriting remains the lender’s decision.

How common is FICO use?

FICO states that 90% of top U.S. lenders use FICO Scores. This is FICO’s own published claim, and the cited page does not state a year; it is not an independently verified statistic from the CFPB. The claim explains why FICO information is relevant, not why every bank or app will show the same number.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Comparing labels instead of models: “Credit score” does not establish that two services use FICO.
  • Ignoring the bureau: A score from Equifax is not automatically interchangeable with one from Experian or TransUnion.
  • Overlooking the date: A score generated before a balance update can legitimately differ from one generated afterward.
  • Assuming newer means universally better: A lender may still use an older FICO version because its systems have not adopted the newer one.
  • Disputing before checking dates: A legitimate item that has not reached every bureau is not necessarily an error.
  • Expecting a monitoring score to predict approval: Lenders choose their scoring and underwriting inputs.

The practical rule

When two scores differ, first compare score brand, bureau, model/version, and report date. If those four fields do not match, the difference is expected. If they do match, examine the underlying bureau reports for different balances, limits, statuses, accounts, inquiries, or update dates, then dispute only information that is inaccurate. This process tells you whether you are seeing different measurements or a report problem—and prevents a consumer app score from being mistaken for a guaranteed lender result.
