Why Your FICO Score Changed: Common Causes and How to Check Your Credit Reports

A FICO score can change whenever the information used to calculate it changes—or when you are looking at a different bureau report, score version, or reporting date. A payment, balance update, new inquiry, account closure, aging item, or newly reported error may alter the calculation. Two numbers that look like a sudden jump or drop may also be valid scores based on different snapshots of your credit files.

Before assuming something is wrong, record the bureau, score brand, model or version, report date, and score-generation date. Then compare the underlying reports, not just the headline number. If you find information that is genuinely inaccurate or incomplete, dispute it with both the credit bureau and the company that supplied the information, keep your documentation, and check the result afterward.

What a FICO score is—and why it can move

A FICO score is a point-in-time calculation made from the credit-report data available when the score is requested. It is not a permanent grade attached to you. As creditors send updated information, the contents of a bureau file can change and the resulting score can change with it.

The three nationwide bureaus can hold different information or receive the same information on different schedules. A score shown by a consumer service may also use a different model or version from the one a lender uses. Consequently, a changed number is not automatically evidence of an error, and an unchanged personal action does not prove that the underlying data stayed unchanged.

First check whether you are comparing the same score

Write down these details for each number before trying to explain a difference:

Comparison point Why it matters
Score brand A FICO score and a score from another scoring brand are different calculations and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Bureau or report source Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion may contain different accounts, balances, dates, or public-record information.
Model and version Different FICO versions can weigh the same report differently. A lender may use a version that is not the one displayed to consumers.
Report date The report may reflect the last data transmission from each creditor, not what is true today.
Score-generation date A newly requested score can use a more recent snapshot than a score saved in an app or statement.
Product type Some services provide a report, some a score, and others alerts or a combination. An alert is not itself a new score calculation.

Only after these fields match is a before-and-after comparison meaningful. If the bureau, model, or date differs, you may be seeing two legitimate calculations rather than one score that mysteriously changed.

Why did my FICO score go down?

Updated balances or credit use

Creditors report balances at their own times. A payment made today may not reach a bureau until the creditor’s next reporting cycle. Conversely, a statement balance can be reported before your payment posts. When the updated balance is incorporated, the score can move even though your account is current.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Changes in balances and available credit can alter the proportion of revolving credit being used. The same dollar balance can have a different effect when a credit limit changes, and the impact depends on the rest of your file. Do not assume that paying a balance on a particular day guarantees a particular score.

A newly reported late payment or other serious event

Payment history is a major part of FICO scoring. A newly reported late payment, bankruptcy, collection, or similar event can lower a score, but there is no universal point deduction. The effect depends on what else is in your file, how recent the event is, and which model is used.

Check the account’s payment-history grid, current status, date of first delinquency where shown, and whether the entry belongs to you. A single status change can explain a movement that you did not notice in day-to-day account activity.

New accounts and inquiries

A recently opened account can change the age and mix of your accounts. A lender’s inquiry may also be considered by the same score version over time. Several applications close together can therefore coincide with a change, although the result varies by profile and model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review the inquiries section for the date, company name, and bureau on which each inquiry appears. Do not treat every unfamiliar inquiry as proof of identity theft; first determine whether it is a legitimate permissible access, a duplicate, or an error.

An account aged or information left the file

Credit files evolve even when you take no new action. Accounts become older, and older negative or inquiry information can eventually stop appearing. Educational material from myFICO uses a late payment reaching a seven-year mark and an inquiry aging past one year as examples, but those are not universal legal deadlines for every item. The applicable item type, reporting rule, and current law matter.

An item aging off can help or hurt depending on what it was and what remains in your file. Compare the previous and current reports for changed dates, status fields, and entries that disappeared.

An account was closed or paid off

Closing a card or paying off a loan can change the information used in scoring. A closed revolving account may no longer contribute available credit in the same way, while paying off an installment loan can alter the mix or the set of active accounts. The outcome depends on the complete file, so a closure or payoff does not have a guaranteed direction or point effect.

Reports arrived at different times

Bureaus do not necessarily receive or process updates simultaneously. One report may show a new balance while another still shows the previous one. A score generated from a stale snapshot can therefore differ from a score requested later, even if you have not taken any action between the two dates.

A different FICO model or a non-FICO score was displayed

The same report can produce different numbers under different FICO versions. A non-FICO score is not directly comparable to a FICO score, and a lender can use a model or industry version that differs from a consumer-facing product. Look for the model name or version in the score details; if it is not shown, treat the number as incomplete for comparison purposes.

A mixed, fragmented, or incomplete file

Differences in names, addresses, Social Security-number fragments, or other identifiers can leave a bureau file incomplete or cause information associated with someone else to appear. Storage and reporting differences between bureaus can produce the same result.

Unfamiliar information deserves investigation, but it is not by itself proof of identity theft. Verify the account, creditor, dates, and contact details, then dispute information that is not yours or is factually wrong.

Why did my credit score change when nothing changed?

“Nothing changed” often means no visible action occurred in your bank or card app. The credit file may still have changed because a creditor reported a new statement balance, a payment status was updated, an inquiry was added, an account reached a new age band, or an older entry stopped reporting. The score may also have been recalculated from a different bureau or version.

To test this explanation, compare the report used for the earlier score with the report used for the later score and mark every difference. Pay particular attention to:

  • Current and previous balances, credit limits, and account status.
  • Payment-history codes and newly reported delinquencies.
  • New accounts, account-opening dates, and inquiries.
  • Collections, bankruptcies, or other public-record information.
  • Accounts or inquiries that disappeared or changed dates.
  • Names, addresses, employers, and account identifiers that could indicate a split or mixed file.

If the reports are identical but the numbers differ, recheck the score brand, model, bureau, report date, and generation date. A model or timestamp mismatch is a more likely explanation than an invisible change in your behavior.

Why are my FICO scores different between bureaus?

There is no single nationwide “FICO score.” Each bureau can supply a separate report, and each report can produce a different score. The differences usually fall into three categories:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
What differs What you may see What to check
Underlying data One bureau lists a balance, account, inquiry, or payment status that another does not. Account ownership, balance, limit, status, payment grid, collections, and inquiries on all three reports.
Timing The same creditor’s update appears on one bureau before the others. “Date reported,” “last updated,” and the date each score was generated.
Scoring calculation Matching reports still produce different numbers. FICO brand, model/version, industry score type, and whether one display is a non-FICO score.

Compare like with like: the same bureau, the same score model, and dates as close together as possible. A lender’s result can still differ if it requests another version or receives a newer report.

How do I check my credit reports?

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau points consumers to AnnualCreditReport.com for checking their reports and recommends reviewing them and correcting errors. The service’s current access terms can change, so read the live site when you request a report rather than relying on an old cadence or promotion.

  1. Record the score details. Save a screenshot or note the provider, whether the score is labeled FICO, the model or version, the bureau, and both the report and score-generation dates.
  2. Request your reports. Use AnnualCreditReport.com, and obtain reports from all three bureaus so that you can see differences that a single report hides.
  3. Confirm identity and ownership. Check names, addresses, account numbers, creditors, and opening dates. Flag accounts or personal information that do not belong to you.
  4. Review account status and balances. Compare current balances, credit limits, payment status, dates updated, and whether an account is open, closed, paid, transferred, or in collection.
  5. Read payment history. Look for a newly coded late payment or a status that conflicts with your statements and cancelled checks.
  6. Check inquiries and new accounts. Match each inquiry to an application or an account review that you recognize, and investigate duplicates or impossible dates.
  7. Look for aging or removed entries. Note accounts, inquiries, collections, or public-record entries that changed dates or no longer appear. Apply the correct rule to the specific item rather than assuming every entry follows the same period.
  8. Compare all three files. A discrepancy appearing on only one bureau may explain why one FICO score moved while another did not.

How to connect a report change to the score date

Make a simple timeline. Put the earlier score and report date on one line, the later score and report date on another, and list each account change between them. Then classify each change:

  • Balance event: a statement balance, payment, credit-limit change, or utilization update.
  • Payment event: a newly reported late status, cure of a delinquency, or other history change.
  • Application event: an inquiry or newly opened account.
  • Lifecycle event: an account aging, closing, payoff, transfer, or an entry leaving the file.
  • Data-quality event: a duplicate, mixed-file item, missing account, or wrong status.
  • Comparison event: a different bureau, model, score brand, or timestamp.

Do not expect the score to react on the day you make a payment or submit a dispute. The event must first be reported and then included in a score request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if I find an error on my credit report?

Dispute only information that is actually inaccurate or incomplete. A correct negative item is not an error merely because it lowers your score.

  1. Identify the exact problem. State the account name and partial account number, the field that is wrong, what it should say, and why.
  2. Gather evidence. Include copies—not irreplaceable originals—of statements, payment confirmations, court documents, identity records, or correspondence that supports the factual correction.
  3. Dispute with the bureau. Follow that bureau’s current online or mail process and keep the submission, attachments, confirmation number, and date.
  4. Contact the information furnisher too. The company that supplied the account data should receive the same explanation and supporting records. Contacting only one party can leave the source data unchanged.
  5. Track the investigation. Save every response and note whether the item was corrected, deleted, or verified as reported. myFICO guidance says investigations are usually completed within 30 days unless a dispute is considered frivolous, but timing can vary and that is not a guarantee.
  6. Check the updated report. Confirm that the specific field changed on the correct bureau file. If it did not, use the response instructions to provide additional documentation or escalate through the available complaint process.

A correction does not guarantee a particular score increase. The score is recalculated from the complete file, so other balances, dates, accounts, and model differences still matter.

How long will a score change last?

There is no single expiration date for a score movement. A balance-related change can reverse when a later balance is reported; a late payment or other serious event can influence scores for much longer; and an inquiry or aging account follows rules tied to its item type and model. The report’s dates and status fields are more useful than a generic promise that a score will recover after a set number of days.

After a dispute, wait for the bureau’s investigation response, verify the corrected entry, and then request or view a score using the same bureau and model as before. Comparing a corrected score with a different model or newer report can obscure the effect of the correction.

Choosing a way to monitor scores and reports

You do not need a paid subscription to request reports or dispute inaccuracies. A paid service can be useful if you specifically want recurring score access, multiple-bureau monitoring, or alerts, but compare the product details before enrolling:

Question Why to ask it
Which score brand and version are included? Determines whether the number is comparable with a lender’s FICO score or with a previous display.
Which bureau reports are covered? A single-bureau product cannot show changes held only by another bureau.
How often are reports and scores refreshed? Frequent alerts do not necessarily mean a new score is calculated each time.
What triggers an alert? Understand whether alerts cover balances, inquiries, new accounts, personal-information changes, or only selected events.
What is the current price and renewal term? Check the provider’s own page for present pricing, automatic renewal, cancellation rules, geography, and availability.

Use monitoring as an early-warning tool, not as a substitute for reading the underlying reports. An alert tells you that something may have changed; the report tells you what changed.

Common mistakes when interpreting a changed FICO score

  • Comparing unlike numbers: A FICO score, another scoring brand, and a lender’s industry-specific version are not interchangeable.
  • Looking at only one bureau: A missing or delayed update can explain a bureau-to-bureau difference.
  • Expecting same-day reporting: Payments and account changes take effect in the score only after a creditor reports them.
  • Assuming a fixed point penalty: The same event can affect different files differently, and models do not all calculate it the same way.
  • Disputing accurate negative information: A dispute is for factual errors or incomplete data, not for removing information simply because it is unfavorable.
  • Sending original documents: Keep originals and submit copies unless the receiving organization specifically requires otherwise.
  • Treating unfamiliar data as conclusive identity theft: Verify the item and identifiers first, then take the appropriate fraud or dispute steps.

A concise decision path

  1. If the score labels, bureaus, models, or dates differ, record the mismatch before drawing a conclusion.
  2. If they match, compare all relevant report sections and identify the first changed field.
  3. If the change is legitimate, allow for the creditor’s reporting schedule and the model’s normal calculation.
  4. If the field is wrong or incomplete, document it and dispute with both the bureau and furnisher.
  5. After the response, verify the report and compare a new score only under matching conditions.
