First identify whether Excel starts slowly with every file, whether one workbook is the outlier, or whether the delay occurs while that workbook refreshes links or recalculates formulas. Those clues point to different fixes.
Start by separating an Excel startup delay from a workbook delay
Open Excel without opening the problem file, then open a different, small workbook. Note when the pause occurs: before a workbook appears, while its grid loads, or after opening as calculations or updates run.

- Excel or every workbook is slow: investigate startup components, add-ins, updates, and other processes before changing the problem file.
- Only one workbook is slow: focus on that file’s formulas, links, queries, formatting, and objects.
- The pause occurs during an operation: check whether Excel is refreshing external data or recalculating formulas. Excel may also seem unresponsive while another process is using it; allow that operation to finish before trying more actions.
Microsoft recommends Safe Mode troubleshooting for Excel hangs and startup or opening problems. Microsoft’s Excel troubleshooting guide covers the broader causes, including add-ins, startup files, calculations, updates, other processes, and environmental factors.
Could an add-in be making Excel slow to start?
On Windows, use Safe Mode as a comparison test. Press Windows key + R, enter Excel /safe, and press Enter. Safe Mode bypasses certain startup locations and settings, including startup folders and Excel add-ins, and most COM add-ins. If Excel behaves better in Safe Mode, an add-in or startup component may be involved; the test does not identify which one by itself.

- In normal Excel, go to File > Options > Add-ins.
- At the bottom, use the Manage list to select COM Add-ins, then choose Go.
- Clear the selected add-ins and restart Excel normally to compare performance.
- If the delay is gone, return to the same list and enable add-ins one at a time, restarting and testing after each, until the problem returns.
Safe Mode is an isolation test, not a permanent fix: some features and settings are bypassed, so judge performance in normal startup after identifying the component.
Is Excel refreshing links or recalculating when the workbook opens?
Check external workbook links
A workbook can refresh linked data on opening. In Excel, inspect Data > Queries and Connections > Workbook Links. The workbook’s link settings can ask before refreshing, always refresh, or skip refresh when opened. Choosing not to refresh may shorten the opening process, but the displayed values can then be out of date. Use that option only if you understand and accept the freshness tradeoff. See Microsoft’s guidance on managing workbook links.

Test whether formulas are recalculating
For a workbook with complex formulas, temporarily test Manual calculation mode to see whether automatic recalculation is contributing to the delay. Treat this as a diagnostic, not a general fix: formulas will not necessarily recalculate automatically while Manual is selected. After the test, restore the intended calculation behavior and verify that results are current. Microsoft includes calculation settings among the troubleshooting steps in its Excel not responding guide.

What workbook contents can make a file slow?
If one file is slow and the pause is not explained by refresh or calculation, inspect its structure. Microsoft identifies these as possible performance contributors, not guaranteed causes:
- Formulas that refer to entire columns when only a smaller range is needed.
- Array formulas whose arguments use uneven numbers of elements.
- Hundreds or thousands of hidden objects, or objects with zero height or width.
- Excessive cell styles, which can accumulate through repeated copying and pasting between workbooks.
- Excessive or invalid defined names.
- Large numbers of geometric shapes or complex shape objects.
These checks are most useful when the delay follows the file across machines or appears only in that workbook. Microsoft’s troubleshooting article describes the possible causes; finding one does not prove it is responsible, so compare opening behavior after a targeted change.
Use excess-formatting cleanup cautiously
Microsoft’s Inquire add-in includes Clean Excess Cell Formatting, which can reduce unnecessary formatting and file size. Make a backup first: Microsoft warns the command cannot be undone and may increase file size in some cases. Inquire availability depends on the installed Microsoft 365 edition. Details are in Microsoft’s instructions for cleaning excess cell formatting.

Do Excel’s size limits explain the slowdown?
Limits provide scale context, not a speed threshold. Microsoft lists the following specifications for Excel for Microsoft 365, Excel 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016:
| Specification | Microsoft’s stated limit |
|---|---|
| Rows per worksheet | 1,048,576 |
| Columns per worksheet | 16,384 |
| Unique cell formats | 65,490 |
| Open workbooks | Limited by available memory and system resources |
These are product limits, not recommended targets or a benchmark for opening speed. A workbook can be slow well below a limit, and reaching a limit does not by itself identify what causes a particular delay. See Microsoft’s Excel specifications and limits.

Check your Excel version and current known issues
Update Excel and check whether a documented issue applies to your version before trying a workaround. Microsoft says versions starting at 2503 include fixes involving PivotTable refresh performance, freeze panes rendering, and geometric shape loading, and recommends using the latest Current Channel version. An update is not guaranteed to fix a slow workbook; it is one branch of the diagnosis. See Microsoft’s current Excel for Windows known-issues page, which was last updated in September 2026, and confirm that any issue or workaround matches your installed version.
Quick Recap
Choose the next test from what you observe
| What you observe | Next useful test |
|---|---|
| Excel itself or several workbooks open slowly | Compare normal startup with Safe Mode; investigate add-ins, startup components, updates, and other processes. |
| Only one workbook opens slowly | Inspect that workbook’s formulas, defined names, formatting, and objects; compare behavior after targeted changes. |
| The pause coincides with linked data updating | Review Workbook Links and decide whether data must refresh on opening. |
| The pause coincides with formula work | Test Manual calculation mode briefly, then restore and verify calculation behavior. |
| The file contains many shapes or extensive formatting | Check for applicable Excel updates; back up before using Inquire’s cleanup command. |
