If an EA SPORTS FC player appears in the wrong place, first determine whether the lineup slot is wrong or the player is moving there because of a role. A player is officially “Out of Position” when the assigned slot is not one of that player’s preferred positions. A player can also start in a suitable slot and then move during possession because the selected role and focus change movement. Check the active tactic, preferred-position indicator, role, focus, and both tactical views before changing the formation.
What “out of position” means in FC
Formation problems in FC IQ are easier to solve when you separate three different ideas: the slot shown on the lineup screen, the player’s preferred positions, and the behavior assigned by a role. They can produce a similar-looking mistake on the pitch, but the remedies are different.

The assigned slot is not a preferred position
EA defines a player as out of position when the position assigned to that player is not among the player’s preferred positions. In FC 25, this is marked with a yellow exclamation icon. EA says the player can still play there, but with a lower level of quality than a player designed for that position. The warning is therefore a suitability warning, not proof that the game has randomly moved your player.

Changing that player’s role will not make the slot a preferred position; you need a different player or a formation that uses the player’s natural positions.

The role moves a player after kickoff
A player may be correctly assigned to a preferred position and still look misplaced once play starts. EA describes the formation as the team’s defensive shape and its basic without-ball lineup. Roles influence what players do in that shape and how they move when your team has possession. A roaming, attacking or support-oriented role can pull a player away from the place shown in the pre-match diagram.
This distinction matters: a player who leaves the slot only when your team has the ball may be following the role, not suffering an out-of-position assignment. Review the role and focus before rebuilding the formation.
The active custom tactic is different
Each custom tactic can have its own formation, settings and player roles while sharing the same squad lineup. If the problem appears after switching tactics, you may be looking at a different set of instructions rather than a changed player card. Always inspect the tactic that is active in the match or menu where you noticed the issue.
How to tell which problem you have
| What you see | Most likely explanation | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow exclamation icon beside a player in FC 25 | The assigned slot is outside the player’s preferred positions; role and focus are simplified. | Compare the slot with the preferred positions listed on the player. |
| Player starts correctly but drifts when you have the ball | The role or focus is directing movement in the with-ball phase. | Compare with-ball and without-ball views, then inspect role and focus. |
| Player is correct in one preset but wrong after switching | Custom tactics have different formations or role assignments. | Open the currently active tactic, not just the default tactic. |
| A similar role is available elsewhere but not in this slot | Role availability and familiarity depend on the player’s position and role combination. | Check the exact role options shown for this player in this position. |
| Players appear to swap unexpectedly after a formation change | Could be a tactic setup error or a community-reported behavior; official material does not establish a widespread current bug. | Recheck every tactic, save it, close and reopen the screen, then test again. |
Read both tactical views before changing anything
FC IQ provides with-ball and without-ball views. Use them as a diagnostic pair rather than relying on the single formation graphic.

Without-ball view
The without-ball view shows the defensive organization EA associates with the formation. It is the best place to verify whether your fullbacks, midfielders, wingers and forwards are assigned to the intended defensive lanes. If a player is already in the wrong lane here, investigate the preferred-position assignment or the active tactic.
With-ball view
The with-ball view shows the movement and spacing created by roles. A fullback may advance, a midfielder may drop between defenders, or a forward may pull wide depending on the selected role and focus. Such movement can be intentional even when the base lineup is correct.
Compare the two views for the same tactic. If the player is suitable in the without-ball view but shifts only in the with-ball view, change the role or focus first. If the player is unsuitable in both, fix the slot or choose a different player.

Role Familiarity describes how well a player performs the responsibilities associated with a role. EA says familiarity affects role responsibilities, movement and behavior options, and transitions between attacking and defensive phases. A player with stronger familiarity should offer more of the intended behavior, while an unfamiliar assignment can produce simpler or less effective movement.

In FC 25, the yellow out-of-position indicator means the role and focus are simplified. EA still allows the player to appear in that slot, but says the player performs at a lower quality than someone designed for the position. A base role can remain viable, so you do not have to find a perfect Roles+ match before a tactic can work. Preferred position remains the sensible starting point, followed by the role that best matches your intended behavior.
Do not assume that a role with the same name behaves identically in every position. The role options, focus choices and familiarity shown for a central midfielder can differ from those shown for a wide midfielder or fullback.
Step-by-step: fix a player who is out of position
- Open the squad or tactics screen for the tactic you are actually using. If you changed a preset during a match, select that tactic rather than editing a different saved setup.
- Identify the assigned slot. Note whether the player is being used as a striker, winger, central midfielder, defensive midfielder, fullback, center-back or another listed position.
- Read the player’s preferred positions. Compare the assigned slot with the positions displayed on the player information panel. In FC 25, a yellow exclamation icon confirms that the slot is not preferred.
- Choose a natural replacement or redesign the shape. Move in a player whose preferred positions include the slot, or select a formation that uses the original player in one of their preferred positions. Do not expect role changes alone to remove a preferred-position mismatch.
- Inspect the available role and focus. Select the player in the corrected slot and review the role options offered there. Choose the role that matches the job you want: holding, supporting, attacking, staying wide or moving inside, according to the labels available in your game version.
- Compare with-ball and without-ball views. Confirm that the defensive location is correct and that any attacking movement is deliberate. If the player still vacates an important zone, test a less aggressive or more conservative focus where available.
- Check every custom tactic. Repeat the position and role review for each saved tactic you use. A player can be correctly placed in one tactic and incorrectly placed in another because tactics share the lineup but not necessarily the formation or role assignments.
- Save, close and reopen the tactic. Confirm that the selected formation, slot, role and focus remain visible. This is a practical verification step, not evidence of a documented save-system bug.
- Test in a low-stakes match or practice situation. Watch the player in both phases. Decide whether the remaining movement is an intended role behavior or a setup error before making another change.
How to choose between moving the player and changing the formation
Keep the formation when the base shape is right
If the player occupies a preferred position and only moves during possession, keep the formation and adjust the role or focus. This preserves the defensive structure while changing the attacking pattern. It is usually the least disruptive fix when your midfield distances and defensive coverage already work.

Change the formation when several players are mismatched
One warning may be solved by a substitution; several warnings usually indicate that the formation does not fit your squad. Build the shape around the positions your strongest players actually support. Then assign roles that preserve the defensive structure and create the attacking movements you want. A formation diagram is only a starting shape, so judge the result in both tactical views.

EA’s FC 26 Gameplay Deep Dive describes a more flexible role system. EA says roles are less restrictive, regular Roles and Roles+ were improved, and a Versatile focus was added for selected roles. EA also says it “Drastically reduced the negative impact of being Out of Position.”
What the change does not mean
Less restriction does not make every assignment equivalent. The available Versatile focus depends on the player’s position and role, and the options shown in-game are the authority for your specific player. Preferred positions and role fit still help determine whether a player performs the behavior you want.

When to try Versatile
Use Versatile when it is offered for the selected player and role and you want more freedom than a narrowly defined focus provides. Compare the resulting with-ball movement with your without-ball shape. If the player now leaves a zone you must protect, return to a more specific focus or choose a different role.
Common situations and targeted fixes
A winger keeps appearing inside
First confirm that the player is assigned to a wide position and that the without-ball view shows the expected width. If the player narrows only with the ball, the role or focus is likely encouraging an inside movement. Select a role or focus that preserves width, if the game offers one, rather than replacing the player immediately.
A fullback is too high in attack
Check whether the movement occurs only in possession. If so, review the fullback’s role and focus. A more conservative assignment can keep the player closer to the defensive line. If the player is misplaced even without the ball, assign a natural fullback or change the formation.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A midfielder drops into defense unexpectedly
Compare the with-ball and without-ball diagrams, then inspect the midfielder’s role. A supporting or holding behavior can create a deeper position during buildup. If that movement is not part of your plan, choose another available focus or use a midfielder whose preferred position and role familiarity better match the intended task.
Everything changes after switching tactics
Open the tactic you selected immediately before the change. Verify its formation, every player slot and every role. Because custom tactics can carry separate settings, correcting the default tactic will not correct a different active tactic.
Players seem to swap after editing
Community reports describe players changing places after formation edits, but the official FC 25 and FC 26 material does not verify this as a widespread current bug. Treat it first as a configuration problem: inspect the active tactic, confirm each slot, save, reopen, and test with one change at a time. If the behavior survives across tactics and sessions, record the exact steps, platform and game version before seeking technical support.
Mistakes that make the problem harder to diagnose
- Changing several variables at once. If you move the player, change formation, role and focus simultaneously, you cannot tell which setting solved or caused the movement.
- Judging only the kickoff graphic. The base shape does not show every role-driven movement. Always inspect with-ball and without-ball views.
- Assuming Role Familiarity is a position change. Familiarity affects behavior quality; it does not turn a non-preferred slot into a preferred one.
- Editing the wrong tactic. Shared lineups can hide different formation and role settings across custom tactics.
- Treating every movement as a bug. Roles are designed to change positioning during possession. Verify the assignment before concluding that the game has swapped players.
- Copying FC 25 instructions into FC 26. FC 26 changed role flexibility and out-of-position effects, so use the labels and options visible in your current version.
A practical diagnostic checklist
- Is the player’s assigned slot one of the preferred positions shown on the card?
- If you are using FC 25, does a yellow exclamation icon appear?
- Is the player misplaced in the without-ball view, the with-ball view, or both?
- Which role and focus are selected, and what movement do their descriptions imply?
- Would a base role provide the behavior you need without forcing a specialist assignment?
- Is a Versatile focus available in FC 26 for this exact position and role?
- Did the issue begin after switching to another custom tactic?
- After saving and reopening, do the same formation, slot, role and focus remain selected?
The shortest reliable fix
Start with the active tactic and the player’s preferred positions. Replace or reposition anyone assigned outside those positions. Then use the with-ball and without-ball views to determine whether remaining movement comes from the role. Adjust the role or focus for intentional movement, redesign the formation when several slots are mismatched, and use FC 26’s more flexible options only where the game makes them available. This process separates a genuine lineup error from normal FC IQ behavior without sacrificing the tactical shape you want.
