Iterating guild.members.values() visits the members represented in that collection at that moment; it does not prove that every member is represented. If a scheduled job must consider offline or otherwise unseen members, either build its candidate list from durable records or deliberately request the roster with the required access—and log what the job actually examined.
How an incomplete cache can make a sweep miss members
In a September 30, 2026 DEV Community post, Motzumoto described setting largeThreshold: 50 after reading a comment that it saved memory “with no functional loss.” The author says the initial guild data omitted offline members above that threshold, while the bot fetched a full roster only when it received a guild-join event. When the process restarted, existing guilds did not get that fetch. As a result, their cache represented online members and members seen since—not a verified complete roster. Read Motzumoto’s incident account.

This is an account of one bot, not an independently verified test or a guarantee about every Discord library. A cache reflects what the bot has received and retained under its gateway configuration, event history, and library behavior. Check the documentation for the exact Discord library and version your project uses before relying on a particular fetch method or cache guarantee.
The incident illustrates the gap between examining a collection and examining a whole guild. A loop such as for (const member of guild.members.values()) can only visit entries present in that collection; the loop itself cannot fill in missing members.

Why the bot appeared to time out nobody
Motzumoto reports searching 200 MB of production logs and finding zero occurrences of the “verification timeout action applied” line. The same post says two of the four servers using the gate were above the configured threshold: one had 532 members and another had 54. The author says the 54-member server was affected by a threshold of 50, whereas Discord’s stated default threshold of 250 would not have included it. Those are incident-specific figures and a threshold comparison reported by the author, not general statistics or an independently checked statement of current protocol defaults.
The missing log line was not enough to show that nobody qualified for action. The sweep returned early and silently when it found no candidates. That left at least two possibilities: it examined the intended population and found no matches, or it never examined the members needed to find them. A useful diagnostic must distinguish those outcomes.
Choose the right source of candidates
Before walking a guild’s members, ask whether the job actually needs offline or otherwise unseen members. If it acts only on users encountered through events or recent interactions, a partial cache may be adequate. If it must audit everyone, do not silently treat whatever is cached as the source of truth.

Use durable records for a known actionable set
For a workflow such as pending verification, persist who needs action instead of reconstructing that set from the current cache on every sweep. Motzumoto says they added a pending_verification table and used it as the candidate source. That approach targets known pending users; it does not substitute for a full roster when the job’s requirement is to audit every guild member.
Define the record lifecycle for your bot: when a user is marked complete, when a request is cancelled, and what happens if the member leaves the server. The incident account does not specify those rules, so they must reflect the application’s own workflow.
Fetch deliberately when the task requires a roster
If the operation genuinely needs the guild’s member list, fetch it intentionally before iterating and handle unavailable members or request failures explicitly. Discord Developer Support says the privileged Guild Members intent controls access to guild-member events—including joins, profile updates, and leaves—and the ability to request guild member lists. Confirm that the application has the necessary current access and that the installed library’s fetch behavior matches your needs. Discord’s privileged-intents guidance was updated June 10, 2026.
Discord’s June 10, 2026 announcement describes updated requirements for apps accessing server data, including member lists, presence, and message content, with user-based thresholds and review requirements for privileged intents. Check the Developer Portal and Discord’s current server-data access guidance for the requirements that apply to your app before shipping.
Make scheduled sweeps observable
For every run, record enough to show what population was examined and what happened. Useful fields include:
Best Value
- Guild identifier and sweep time.
- Candidate count and examined count.
- Unavailable or not-cached count, where the library exposes it.
- Actions taken, plus errors and fetch failures.
A run with zero matches should still report that it examined the intended candidate set. A run that could not obtain that set should report the limitation or failure instead of looking like a successful empty sweep. This makes “nothing qualified” distinguishable from “the job did not see everyone it needed to inspect.”
Treat the threshold as a tradeoff, not a guarantee
Motzumoto says the threshold reduced memory use and that they kept it, but the account gives no measurement of the savings or benchmark against alternatives. Do not assume a threshold has “no functional loss” for an application that needs a complete roster. Verify the current Discord Gateway behavior and your library’s implementation, then test the exact startup and scheduled-job paths your bot uses. The available official guidance cited here establishes the privileged-intent context, but does not substantiate the incident post’s exact threshold mechanics or default value.
