A Google ranking does not guarantee that ChatGPT Search will mention or cite your business. The two services have separate discovery and eligibility conditions. To troubleshoot, check whether OpenAI’s OAI-SearchBot can access your pages, whether hosting or security systems interfere with crawlers, and whether your important content is clear and reachable. These checks can improve eligibility and help identify problems, but they cannot guarantee a ChatGPT appearance.
Why a Google ranking may not carry over to ChatGPT
Google visibility and ChatGPT Search visibility are different outcomes. A page appearing in Google does not establish that OpenAI’s search crawler can reach it, nor does crawler access guarantee that ChatGPT will select the page for an answer. OpenAI’s guidance for publishers who want content included in ChatGPT Search summaries and snippets is to allow OAI-SearchBot. Google’s guidance for its AI Search features, meanwhile, emphasizes established SEO fundamentals such as crawl access and useful, accessible page content.

There is no official statistic in the cited guidance showing how often Google-visible businesses are absent from ChatGPT. Treat this as a page-level troubleshooting problem, not proof that your business needs a special AI-ranking trick.

Check the crawler and access path
1. Review robots.txt for OAI-SearchBot
Open your live robots.txt file and inspect the rules that apply to the pages you want ChatGPT Search to find. Look for rules that block OAI-SearchBot or disallow access to the relevant paths. OpenAI identifies this crawler as relevant to discovery and inclusion in ChatGPT Search summaries and snippets. If your policy is to make those pages available for that purpose, ensure the rules permit access.

Do not treat permission as a promise of inclusion. A crawler being allowed to visit a page does not mean the page will be cited or that your business will be recommended.
2. Check hosting, CDN, and security behavior
A permissive robots.txt file is not enough if the request cannot reach the page. Google Search Central notes that CDN and hosting infrastructure can affect crawl access. Ask your hosting, CDN, or security provider to check whether legitimate crawler requests can reach important URLs and receive the page content rather than an access challenge or block.

This is an access diagnosis, not evidence that a crawler has selected your page. If a provider investigates, specify the affected URLs and ask them to review the request path and any security rules that may apply.

OpenAI describes OAI-SearchBot as relevant to ChatGPT Search, while GPTBot serves a different purpose. Check the bot that matches your goal; allowing or blocking one should not be treated as a substitute for checking the other. OpenAI’s crawler documentation explains the distinction.

Verify Google’s view of the page
Use Google Search Console to check the Google-side status of the affected URL. In Search Console, open URL Inspection and review the indexing information and the rendered page or HTML Googlebot received. This can reveal Google crawl, indexing, or rendering problems that are worth fixing.
A Google result or successful inspection does not certify access for OAI-SearchBot. Use this check to diagnose Google’s view of the page, then separately verify the OpenAI crawler’s access path.

Make important business information easy to find
Google recommends making important content accessible and useful, linking to key pages from elsewhere on your site, and providing important information in text rather than relying on content that is difficult to read or extract. For a business, that means making core details—such as services, locations, and relevant explanations—clear on the pages where people and crawlers can reach them.

- Make essential information available as readable page text.
- Ensure structured data reflects information that is actually visible on the page.
Google says special schema.org markup is not required for its AI Search features. Its guidance also advises against spending effort on unnecessary AI text files or inauthentic mentions. Focus on accessibility, clear content, and ordinary search fundamentals instead of tactics that claim to force an AI answer to name a company. See Google Search Central’s guidance on AI features.

Choose crawler settings according to your goal
There are separate questions: whether you want content available for ChatGPT Search discovery and summaries, and whether you want it available for other OpenAI purposes. OpenAI’s documentation distinguishes OAI-SearchBot from GPTBot; do not assume you need to enable every crawler to address search visibility.
OpenAI also documents a separate case involving ChatGPT Atlas: if it obtains the URL of a disallowed page from a third-party search provider or other pages and has signals that the page is relevant, it may surface the link and page title. OpenAI says publishers who do not want that should use a noindex meta tag, and the crawler must be allowed to read the relevant page to see that tag. This is a separate control consideration, not a way to improve ChatGPT Search visibility. Consult OpenAI’s crawler guidance before changing access rules.
Recheck after making a change
- Identify the affected business page and the access or content problem you intend to address.
- Update the relevant robots.txt rule, hosting or security configuration, internal links, or page content.
- Recheck the page and its access rules after the change. Use Search Console URL Inspection for Google’s crawl and rendered-page view, and have the relevant provider verify any hosting or security changes.
- Check ChatGPT Search over time, but do not interpret the absence of a mention as proof that one particular technical setting is still wrong.
OpenAI and Google do not promise that a technical fix will produce an immediate ChatGPT citation or business recommendation. The useful outcome of these steps is knowing whether your pages are accessible and presenting their information clearly—not control over which sources an AI answer chooses.
