Why Your Brand Isn’t Showing Up in ChatGPT Search—and What to Check

Your brand can be missing from ChatGPT Search because OpenAI’s search crawler cannot access your site, a page is excluded from indexing, or the page simply is not selected for the prompt being asked. Check the technical access conditions first, then test relevant customer queries. Passing those checks makes a site eligible to appear; it does not guarantee a mention.

1. OAI-SearchBot is blocked in robots.txt

OpenAI says public websites can appear in ChatGPT Search and recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot so site content can be included in Search summaries and snippets. Review the live robots.txt file for rules that apply to the pages you want discovered. A rule disallowing the crawler can prevent it from accessing those pages. See OpenAI’s publisher and developer FAQ.

  • Check the live file at your domain’s /robots.txt path.
  • Look for a disallow rule applying to OAI-SearchBot, including broader rules that may affect it.
  • Adjust the rule if you want those pages available to ChatGPT Search, then verify the updated file is publicly accessible.

2. Your host, firewall, or CDN blocks OpenAI crawler traffic

A robots.txt permission is only one part of access. OpenAI also says the hosting environment must allow traffic from its published searchbot IP addresses. Review firewall, web application firewall, hosting, and CDN rules for blocks or challenges affecting those addresses, and allow them as described in OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search guidance. If requests are blocked upstream, changing robots.txt alone will not resolve the problem.

3. You are checking GPTBot instead of OAI-SearchBot

OpenAI discusses GPTBot separately in its guidance about opting out of training. For ChatGPT Search eligibility, check the Search crawler, OAI-SearchBot; a setting for GPTBot alone does not establish whether Search can crawl your pages. The distinction is covered in OpenAI’s publisher and developer FAQ.

4. The page is marked noindex or otherwise excluded

Inspect page-level indexing directives and any site rules that intentionally exclude the URL. OpenAI says it needs permission to crawl a page to read its noindex meta tag. Its guidance also notes that if a disallowed URL is discovered elsewhere, ChatGPT Atlas may show only the page title and link when relevance signals exist; publishers who do not want that limited display can use noindex. This is distinct from being cited as a useful source in a Search answer.

5. You are judging visibility from one answer

A single prompt is a poor basis for deciding that a brand never appears. Try several realistic customer questions and record what happens: whether the brand is named, whether a page is cited, and whether a title-and-link result appears without a citation. ChatGPT Search may use different targeted queries and results, so this is a practical way to observe outcomes—not a published OpenAI ranking requirement.

6. The page does not answer the prompt clearly

A site may be accessible yet not selected for a particular question. Compare the wording and intent of the prompt with the page itself: does the page clearly explain the relevant product or service, the geography it serves, and evidence that supports its claims? Make the information explicit for readers. OpenAI says Search uses multiple factors intended to find relevant and reliable results, but it does not publish a complete ranking formula; these editorial checks are a diagnostic, not a statement of specific hidden ranking signals. See OpenAI’s Search guidance.

7. You expect crawl eligibility to guarantee a mention

Allowing the crawler and meeting access conditions make content eligible; they do not promise that a brand will be named or placed at a particular position. OpenAI’s Help Center states, “Placement is not guaranteed.” It also describes Search as using multiple factors to find relevant, reliable results. No official statistic in the cited guidance quantifies how often brands are omitted or how much any one technical fix changes visibility.

How to compare a result that appears with one that does not

Use the same checks for both sites, while treating the content-match and result-type checks as practical observations rather than disclosed ranking factors.

Check What to compare What it tells you
OAI-SearchBot permission Whether robots.txt permits the crawler to access the relevant pages. A technical eligibility condition described by OpenAI.
Host and CDN access Whether OpenAI’s published searchbot IP addresses are allowed through access controls. A separate technical access condition; robots.txt alone does not confirm it.
Page exclusions Whether the page has a noindex directive or another deliberate exclusion. Whether the page is intended to be available for discovery.
Prompt and page match Whether the page directly addresses the topic, product or service, and location in the prompt. A useful editorial diagnostic, not a confirmed ranking factor.
Observed result Whether the brand is named, a page is cited, only a title and link appear, or nothing appears. Separates different outcomes instead of treating all absence as the same.

Measure visits separately from answer visibility

When ChatGPT sends a visitor to your site, OpenAI says the referral URL includes utm_source=chatgpt.com. Publishers can use that marker in analytics to monitor inbound referral traffic. It measures visits attributed to ChatGPT referrals; it does not establish how often a brand was mentioned without a click. See OpenAI’s Search guidance.
