They normally learn a location when they connect to your phone over Bluetooth or when a compatible phone in the tracker’s crowd-finding network passes nearby. If neither event happens, the map can remain on an old pin even though the tag is working normally.
Work from the nearest, simplest test outward: try to connect or ring the tracker, check its battery and permissions, verify network and power settings, then inspect the platform’s offline-finding setup. Only after those checks should you consider a faulty or incompatible tag.

What a stale Bluetooth-tracker location actually means
A Bluetooth item tracker usually broadcasts a short-range Bluetooth signal. It does not independently determine its position with a GPS receiver and does not continuously upload coordinates. A nearby phone detects that signal, determines the phone’s own location, and sends an update through the tracker’s service. Some systems also use a crowd network: another participating phone detects the tag and relays an approximate location without its owner manually connecting to the tag.

Tile Support states that “The Tile itself does not have GPS, or real-time location monitoring.” Its location is updated through the Bluetooth connection between the tag and a device running the app; the Tile Network can help when another participating device comes within range. Xiaomi gives the same basic explanation for Xiaomi Tag: the tag has no GPS, so remote updates depend on an assisting phone in the matching Find My or Find Hub network, the required permissions, and usable Bluetooth and internet coverage. Apple describes Find My accessories as being detected over Bluetooth by nearby Apple devices, which then report an approximate location.

Therefore, an old map pin means “last reported location,” not necessarily “the item is still there.” A tag can ring when it is next to you while its remote map entry remains hours or days old because no compatible network participant has passed near it. Conversely, a recent crowd-network pin confirms a detection event, not that the item has stayed at that point since then.
Last known does not mean continuously tracked
Apple says Find My may show an item’s last known location for up to seven days when it cannot display a current location. That seven-day period is Apple-specific; it should not be treated as a universal retention period for Tile, Xiaomi, Android, or any other platform. Always read the timestamp shown in the app and treat the age of that timestamp as part of the evidence.
First test: can the tracker communicate when it is beside you?
Bring the tag within a few feet of the phone that normally manages it. Open the relevant app and use its connect, find, or ring control. A successful ring or connection proves that the phone and tag can communicate locally. It does not prove that the crowd network has recently detected the tag at a distance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Open the tracker app while standing next to the tag.
- Wait for the tag to appear as connected, then select the app’s ring or find command.
- Listen for the sound and watch for a connection or “last seen” change.
- If it responds, record the current time and compare it with the remote map timestamp later.
For Tile, the official connection guidance says that a Tile that does not play its tune may have a dead battery. Other models can use different sounds, controls, and battery behavior, so do not assume that one manufacturer’s procedure applies to another.

- Your Privacy, Fully Protected: Certified by Apple MFi, this Bluetooth Air Tracker Tag uses end-to-end encryption to keep your location data private and secure. All communications are anonymous and encrypted, and no location data is stored on the device. Even if your item is lost, your information remains protected and cannot be accessed without your permission — not by Apple, the manufacturer, or any third party.
Check power without guessing the battery or reset method
Look for the battery indicator or warning in the app and follow the exact instructions for your model. Bluetooth trackers do not share one universal cell type, replacement procedure, or reset sequence. Some batteries are user-replaceable; others are sealed or require a manufacturer-specific process. Buying a generic coin cell or applying a reset sequence from a different model can damage the tag or remove its pairing.
- Read the model name printed on the tag or shown in the app.
- Use the maker’s support page for that exact model and hardware revision.
- Replace or recharge the battery only as instructed, observing polarity and any water-resistance warnings.
- After servicing, reopen the app and perform a nearby ring test before judging remote reporting.
If the tag remains silent immediately beside the phone after the documented battery procedure, the problem is more likely power, hardware, or pairing than a lack of crowd-network coverage.
Verify Bluetooth, phone location, and app permissions
The phone must be allowed to use Bluetooth and location information for local detection and map updates. Tile’s troubleshooting instructions specifically call out Bluetooth permission, Location Services permission, and current versions of both the phone software and app. Android separates the device-wide Location switch from each app’s location permission, and menu labels vary by Android version and phone manufacturer.

- Open Settings and confirm Bluetooth is on.
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services; turn Location Services on and allow the tracker app the access it requests.
- Check the app’s entry under Settings > [app name] for Bluetooth and location access.
- Update the tracker app and install any available iOS or iPadOS update that the manufacturer supports.
On Android
- Open Settings > Location and turn the device Location setting on. The exact path can differ by manufacturer.
- Open Settings > Apps > [tracker app] > Permissions and allow the location and nearby-device permissions requested by the app.
- Keep Bluetooth enabled and install updates for the tracker app and Android system.
- Review any “Nearby devices,” Bluetooth scanning, or precise-location controls offered by your phone’s Android version.
Turning on a permission after the app has been denied may require closing and reopening the app, restarting Bluetooth, or restarting the phone. Do not disable location access immediately after a test: the app needs the permission while it is trying to detect and report the tag.

Check internet access and battery-saving restrictions
A local Bluetooth connection and a remote map update are separate events. The phone can hear the tracker but still fail to upload the observation if its Wi-Fi or cellular connection is unavailable. Tile’s incorrect-location guidance says to use a secure Wi-Fi or cellular connection and turn battery saver off to obtain the most up-to-date locations. That is Tile-specific advice; other services may use different names or background-operation rules.
- Switch between a reliable Wi-Fi network and cellular data to rule out a blocked connection.
- Temporarily turn off Battery Saver, Low Power Mode, or an equivalent background restriction while testing.
- Allow the tracker app to run in the background if your phone offers a per-app battery setting.
- Open the app after changing these settings and perform another nearby find operation.
Power-management rules are especially important for crowd networks. A participating phone that aggressively suspends Bluetooth scanning or the tracker app may not contribute detections promptly, even when its owner is carrying the phone through the tag’s vicinity.
Platform-specific fixes
Tile: “Tile isn’t connecting” or an incorrect location
Use Tile’s direct Find control while standing next to the tag. If it does not play a tune, investigate the battery and the exact model instructions. Confirm Bluetooth and Location Services permissions, update the phone and Tile app, and use a secure Wi-Fi or cellular connection. Disable battery saver during the test. A successful ring establishes local communication; a stale remote location can still result when no other Tile-network device has passed near the item.

Apple Find My
Find My relies on nearby Apple devices to detect a compatible accessory over Bluetooth and report an approximate location. When a current report is unavailable, the app can display the last known location; Apple documents availability for up to seven days. Check the displayed timestamp, keep Bluetooth and Location Services enabled on the managing device, and test the accessory at close range. Do not interpret an old Find My pin as proof of continuous movement or continuous presence.

Android Find Hub
Google’s Find Hub uses Bluetooth scanning to detect nearby items and provides choices for how the device participates in offline finding. In the Find Hub help flow, an out-of-sync accessory can be sent a Sync recent location request. If it still will not sync, Google’s guidance is to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for a factory reset and then reconnect the accessory. Android setting names and feature availability vary by phone maker and Android version, so use the labels shown on your device rather than a menu path copied from another handset.
Xiaomi Tag: “Why is the location of a Xiaomi Tag sometimes not updated promptly?”
Xiaomi states that Xiaomi Tag itself does not support GPS positioning. A remote update requires an assisting phone in the matching network, the necessary location permissions, and stable Bluetooth and network coverage. If the tag rings nearby but its map remains old, inspect those conditions before assuming the tag is defective. In a sparse area or where few devices participate in the relevant network, an update may simply have no opportunity to occur.
Understand crowd-network delays and coverage
Remote finding is opportunistic. The tag must be within Bluetooth range of a compatible, participating phone, and that phone must be able to submit the detection. A busy urban area with many participating devices can produce more opportunities than a rural road, warehouse, basement, or building with restricted radio coverage. A network’s participation setting can also reduce detections.
This limitation explains a common pattern: the tag works when you stand beside it, yet the map remains stale when you leave it somewhere. Nothing is necessarily wrong with the tag. No compatible participant may have passed close enough, or a participant may have had Bluetooth, location, internet, or background activity disabled.

- Read the timestamp. Note when the map last changed and whether the app labels it current, recent, or last known.
- Stand beside the tag. Use the app’s connect or ring control and wait for a response.
- Check power. Follow the exact model’s battery or charging instructions; do not substitute a universal part.
- Enable radio access. Turn on Bluetooth and grant the app the required nearby-device or Bluetooth permission.
- Enable location. Turn on the phone’s Location setting and grant the app the required location level.
- Restore connectivity. Use dependable Wi-Fi or cellular data and retry the operation.
- Remove power restrictions. Temporarily disable battery-saving modes and permit background activity for the tracker app.
- Update software. Install supported updates for the phone, app, and tracker firmware when offered.
- Use the platform command. In Find Hub, try Sync recent location; in other apps, use the equivalent refresh or find control.
- Test away from the tag. After local communication works, leave the tag in a safe place and check whether a compatible network participant eventually reports it.
- Reset only as a last resort. Use the manufacturer’s documented reset and reconnection procedure, because a reset can remove pairing and account association.
How to decide whether the tag is faulty
Evidence of a fault is stronger when the tag does not respond at close range after the documented power, permission, and pairing checks. A remote-only delay is weak evidence of failure because crowd-network reporting is not continuous or guaranteed.
- Likely network limitation: the tag rings beside the phone, permissions are enabled, and only the remote map is old.
- Likely phone or app configuration issue: the tag works with one phone but not another, or changing permissions and battery settings immediately restores updates.
- Possible power or hardware issue: no sound or connection occurs beside the phone after the model-specific battery procedure.
- Possible compatibility issue: the accessory cannot be added to the phone’s supported app or network, even after following the maker’s setup instructions.
Document the model, phone operating system, app version, last successful local ring, and map timestamp before contacting support. Those details distinguish a dead battery from a permission problem and a functioning tag in an area with little network coverage.
If you replace the tracker
Replacement makes sense only after diagnostics suggest a failed, incompatible, or impractical device. Choose against the phone ecosystem and the way you intend to find the item, not merely against a advertised range claim.
| Decision point | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Phone compatibility | Supported iOS or Android version and the required app | An otherwise healthy tag cannot report through an unsupported phone or account. |
| Location network | Which Apple, Android, or manufacturer network detects the tag | Remote updates depend on nearby participants in that specific network. |
| Account and app | Whether setup requires a particular account, permissions, or background access | Missing access can look like a dead or out-of-sync tracker. |
| Local finding | Ring, connect, and close-range finding behavior | Useful when you are near the item, independent of crowd coverage. |
| Remote finding need | How much you rely on crowd-network reports | A new tag cannot create nearby participants where coverage is sparse. |
No replacement can guarantee continuous location reporting from a Bluetooth-only design. If your use case requires independent, continuous positioning, first confirm that the product category and its documented capabilities actually provide that function; do not infer it from a Bluetooth tracker’s map interface.
Safety: an unknown-tracker alert is a different problem
This guide concerns your own item tracker. If your phone warns that an unknown tracker is traveling with you, changing the phone’s Bluetooth or Location setting does not stop the tracker from sharing its location. Google’s safety guidance says to follow the manufacturer’s instructions to disable the tracker itself. Use the alert’s safety workflow and local authorities or trusted contacts when you believe someone may be tracking you without consent.
Common mistakes that prolong a stale location
- Assuming every map pin is live: read the timestamp and platform wording.
- Expecting GPS behavior: Bluetooth tags need a nearby phone to obtain and relay a location.
- Resetting too soon: a reset can erase pairing when the real issue is battery saver or a missing permission.
- Using another model’s battery advice: cell type and replacement method are model-specific.
- Confusing a local ring with a network update: close-range success does not prove remote coverage.
- Turning off location to save power: that can prevent the phone from contributing a detection.
- Expecting a replacement to solve coverage: a different tag still depends on its compatible network and nearby participants.
What to remember
A Bluetooth tracker that is not updating its location is often behaving within the limits of its design. Start with a nearby ring test, then verify the exact model’s power, Bluetooth, location permissions, connectivity, battery-saving settings, and platform sync controls. If local communication works, investigate network coverage and the age of the last report before replacing the tag. Treat each map entry as an observation made at a particular time, not as a continuous GPS trail.
