Allowing OAI-SearchBot makes your public pages eligible for discovery and inclusion in summaries and snippets; it does not guarantee a high position or a citation. OpenAI says ChatGPT ranks results using multiple factors and that placement is not guaranteed.
Why can good content be invisible to ChatGPT?
“Invisible” can mean several different things: ChatGPT Search may not be able to crawl a page, may not select it for a particular query, or may show results without citing that page. OpenAI’s publisher guidance addresses crawler access and says public websites can appear in ChatGPT Search, but it does not publish a complete ranking formula. A page’s quality alone therefore cannot guarantee that it will appear or be cited.

OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot if you want site content to be eligible for summaries and snippets. Search results can also be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect, so a citation is a pointer to check—not proof that a page is accurate.
How do I get my website to appear in ChatGPT Search?
1. Check whether robots.txt blocks OAI-SearchBot
Review your site’s robots.txt file and make sure it does not disallow OAI-SearchBot if you want your pages considered for ChatGPT Search. OpenAI’s publisher FAQ says, “For your site content to be included in summaries and snippets in ChatGPT, make sure you aren’t blocking OAI-SearchBot.” See OpenAI’s Publishers and Developers FAQ for its publisher guidance.

2. Check the whole route to your pages
A permissive robots.txt rule is not enough if another layer blocks the crawler. OpenAI advises publishers to allow requests from the published OAI-SearchBot IP ranges. Check your hosting provider, content delivery network (CDN), firewall, and bot-mitigation settings for rules that might reject or challenge those requests. OpenAI lists crawler details and IP ranges in its Overview of OpenAI Crawlers.
3. Allow time for a robots.txt change
After changing robots.txt, allow about 24 hours for the change to adjust in OpenAI search systems, according to OpenAI’s crawler documentation. This is an operational estimate, not a promise that a page will then rank, appear, or receive a citation.

4. Check the page and its claims
If ChatGPT cites a page, open the source itself and verify the relevant claim, context, and publication or update date. OpenAI warns that Search results and citations may be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect. Its publisher FAQ explains crawler access and referral tracking; its ChatGPT Search guidance discusses result placement and citation limits.

Allow OAI-SearchBot if you want public pages to be discoverable for ChatGPT Search. Blocking it can prevent your content from being included in ChatGPT Search summaries and snippets. That setting affects search discovery; it is not a lever that guarantees ranking or citations.

Does allowing GPTBot affect ChatGPT Search?
No: OpenAI describes OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot as separate controls. OAI-SearchBot is used for search discovery; GPTBot relates to content that may be used to train generative AI models. ChatGPT-User supports some user-triggered visits and does not control automatic Search inclusion. OpenAI says these controls are independent.
| Crawler | Purpose described by OpenAI | What the setting affects |
|---|---|---|
| OAI-SearchBot | Search discovery | Whether pages can be discovered and considered for ChatGPT Search summaries and snippets |
| GPTBot | Content that may be used to train generative AI models | Training-related crawling, independently of the OAI-SearchBot setting |
| ChatGPT-User | Some user-triggered visits | Does not control automatic ChatGPT Search inclusion |
OpenAI documents these distinctions and the independence of the controls in its Overview of OpenAI Crawlers. Choose robots.txt rules according to whether you want search discovery, training-related crawling, or user-triggered access; changing one does not serve as a substitute for changing another.
How can I track traffic from ChatGPT?
OpenAI says publishers can track ChatGPT referrals in their analytics. Referral URLs use utm_source=chatgpt.com. This can help identify visits attributed to ChatGPT, but referral counts do not reveal a page’s Search position or establish the quality of its citations. OpenAI provides this referral information in its Publishers and Developers FAQ.
What crawler access can—and cannot—fix
- It can: remove an access barrier that may prevent OAI-SearchBot from discovering your public pages.
- It cannot: guarantee that a page will appear for a query, rank highly, or be cited.
- It does not establish: that a cited answer is current or correct; verify the source page when accuracy matters.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search documentation says results are ranked using multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information, but placement is not guaranteed. The crawler guidance describes access controls, not a complete recipe for visibility.
