An AirPods beep is often a low-battery warning, a charging-case sound, or a Find My locating signal. First work out whether the sound comes from an earbud or the case, then check the battery and whether Find My recently started playing a sound. The meaning and available controls depend on your AirPods and charging-case model.
First, identify where the beep is coming from
Listen for whether the tone comes from the left or right earbud, or from the charging case. Note when it happens: while you are wearing the AirPods, as you start charging the case, or while someone is using Find My to locate them. Those details help distinguish the documented alerts from an unexplained sound.

- An earbud tone: Check the charge of both AirPods. Apple says a low-battery tone can sound in one or both earbuds.
- A case tone when charging starts: Some newer cases play a sound when charging begins or when case battery is low.
- A series of beeps while locating: Find My may be playing a deliberate sound to help locate nearby AirPods.
Apple does not publish a complete sound-code chart, so an unusual beep alone does not establish a hardware fault.

Apple says a tone sounds in one or both AirPods when their charge is low: once at 10 percent remaining, then again just before the AirPods turn off. On an iPhone or iPad paired with the AirPods, check their battery status in the AirPods or Bluetooth settings. You can also check the status on a Mac or use the case status light; available details vary by device and model. Apple also lists iPhone and iPad low-battery notifications at 20, 10, and 5 percent. These notification thresholds are separate from the earbuds’ audible warning. Apple’s AirPods charging guidance explains the checks and warnings.

If an earbud or the case is low, place the AirPods in the case and charge it. The correct cable depends on the case: confirm whether your model uses USB-C or Lightning before choosing one. Some wireless charging cases can also be charged wirelessly; support varies by model.
Check whether the charging case is making a normal sound
Apple lists a charging-start or low-case-battery sound for AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, AirPods 4 (ANC), and AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case. If one of these cases sounds as charging begins, the tone may be expected behavior. Apple says the charging-case sound can be turned off on the supported models it identifies. Check the AirPods settings for your specific model rather than assuming the control is available on every case. Turning off this case sound does not disable the earbuds’ separate low-battery warning. Check whether Find My is playing the beeps
Find My can play a series of beeps to help locate nearby AirPods; this is a locating action, not necessarily a fault. On an iPhone, open Find My, choose Devices, select your AirPods, and review the available controls. If a sound is playing, use the controls shown there to manage or stop it. Apple describes this feature in Find your lost AirPods with Find My.

If Find My shows Offline or No location found, the AirPods may be out of range or need charging, and a sound may not be playable. If the beep appears during setup or a connection problem
Do not assume that every beep signals a pairing issue. But if the sound coincides with an alert that AirPods setup is incomplete, follow Apple’s setup guidance: check that the device software is current and that Find My and Bluetooth setup are in place, then close the case briefly and reopen it to continue pairing. When the sound remains unexplained
If the battery warning, a supported case sound, and Find My playback do not account for the beep, identify your AirPods and case model and contact Apple Support for model-specific help. Apple’s published guidance covers several common sounds, but it does not diagnose every persistent or irregular beep. Do not infer a defective battery, moisture damage, or another hardware problem from the sound alone.
