Start by diagnosing the scan rather than immediately filling holes or applying heavy smoothing. Recapture missing views whenever possible, then use mesh-repair tools only for defects that cannot be captured again.
First identify what kind of defect you have
The same model can contain several different problems. A true opening, a noisy patch, a tracking seam and a shadowed recess need different fixes. Zoom in on the mesh and compare the defect with the physical object before changing settings.

| What you see | Most likely explanation | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| Open boundary or visible gap | The scanner had no usable observations from that area, often because of occlusion or insufficient angles. | Capture the hidden surface from additional angles and merge the supported passes. |
| Broad graininess or a sandy texture | Unstable tracking, unsuitable distance, difficult reflectance, uneven lighting or calibration drift. | Stabilize the setup, check distance and lighting, then run the scanner’s calibration process. |
| Small bumps on shiny areas | Reflections are confusing the projected light or laser. | Use only the surface preparation and exposure guidance approved for your scanner. |
| A sharp seam between passes | Tracking or alignment changed while you moved around the object. | Rescan with slower, overlapping motion and the scanner’s recommended tracking features. |
| A filled area that looks flat or bridged | Software created a cap across missing data rather than recovering the real shape. | Inspect the physical object; recapture if the geometry matters. |
A localized opening generally calls for better visibility and coverage. Roughness over most of the model calls for checking capture stability, surface conditions and calibration first. This is a practical diagnostic pattern, not a guarantee for every scanner or software version.

Why a 3D scan has holes
The scanner could not see the surface
A scanner records only the surfaces visible to its sensor from its current geometry. An underside, deep cavity, narrow recess or area hidden behind a rim can remain completely unmeasured. When the software exports a mesh, those absent observations appear as holes or incomplete boundaries.

Move the object or scanner so the sensor has a clear line of sight into the missing area. Use several overlapping views rather than one extreme angle. If the workflow supports separate passes, capture the hidden region as another pass and merge it using the manufacturer’s alignment process. A mesh can be watertight after filling while still containing no measured information in the capped area.
Angles and overlap were insufficient
Even a surface that is technically visible can be missed if the scanner sees it for too few frames or at an unfavorable angle. Narrow features may disappear between passes when adjacent scans do not overlap enough for reliable alignment. Capture the object slowly enough to obtain repeated observations and deliberately revisit areas that border a hole.
Tracking was lost
When the software loses its reference, it may stop recording, reject frames or align a new section incorrectly. Repeated tracking loss can leave gaps, duplicated geometry or a visible seam. Check the recommended scanning distance first. If the scanner’s workflow uses markers, texture or scene features, add only the type and placement described in its manual. Changing the setup or adding suitable features can be more effective than repeatedly circling the same area.
The surface or background confused the sensor
Glossy, reflective, transparent and very dark materials can produce weak, scattered or unpredictable returns. Mixed glossy and matte areas can be especially difficult because the signal changes abruptly as you move. A background with excessive contrast can also interfere with some capture methods. For laser workflows, sparse lines and incomplete capture on dark or mixed-finish objects are known troubleshooting symptoms.

Do not assume that every scanner needs powder or spray. Some devices and materials require a removable scanning spray; others have different exposure or mode recommendations. Check the current manual for your exact model, confirm that the product is compatible with the object, and consider whether it can be removed without staining or damaging the surface.
Why a 3D scan looks rough or grainy
Unstable motion or capture rate
Moving too quickly can reduce the number of useful frames and make alignment less reliable. Frequent surface errors may improve when you slow the scanner’s movement or increase its capture rate, if that control exists in your software. Keep the sensor at the recommended distance and use a steady speed rather than stopping and starting at every feature.
Reflectance, color and exposure
Shiny surfaces can reflect projected light into the wrong direction, producing bumpy or uneven patches and sometimes holes. Transparent objects may transmit or refract the pattern instead of returning a stable measurement. Dark surfaces can return too little signal. Avoid overexposure and harsh, uneven illumination; change the setup when the surface is clipping, blooming or disappearing from the preview.

Calibration problems
If the entire model remains rough after you have stabilized distance, motion and lighting, calibration is a sensible diagnostic step. Calibration resets internal scanner parameters. Use the calibration object supplied with the device, or the target and procedure specified by its manufacturer. Do not substitute a generic target or invent a calibration interval; schedules and targets differ by model.

Reconstruction settings
Sometimes the raw observations are adequate but the reconstruction leaves noise at edges or between passes. Aggressive smoothing can hide that noise visually while removing real ridges, corners and small holes. Treat software cleanup as a finishing operation after you have ruled out a capture problem.
A reliable troubleshooting sequence
- Inspect the defect. Decide whether it is an open boundary, a noisy surface, a seam, duplicated geometry or an unscanned shadow. Compare it with the physical object under good lighting.
- Check the scanner’s surface guidance. Clean the object and prepare it only as the manufacturer allows. For transparent or specular materials, verify whether a removable spray is supported and appropriate before applying anything.
- Stabilize the setup. Set the recommended working distance, remove glare, avoid uneven illumination and choose a background that does not confuse the capture method. A neutral background and lower black-and-white contrast can help some laser workflows on dark objects, but treat these as model-specific options.
- Recalibrate when roughness is broad. Use the supplied calibration object and the current procedure for your scanner. Calibration is particularly appropriate when the output is consistently very rough or grainy rather than defective in one small recess.
- Recapture slowly. Move at a steady pace, maintain overlap and include the angles that expose undersides, recesses and edges. If tracking drops, adjust distance or the supported tracking features instead of forcing the scan forward.
- Reprocess the data. Align and merge the new pass with the scanner’s supported workflow. Inspect boundaries and fine details before deciding whether any hole filling or smoothing is still necessary.
How to capture missing areas successfully
Plan the path before scanning
Start with a stable reference area, then work around the object in overlapping arcs. Note every recess, underside and narrow channel that the sensor cannot see from the initial path. Pause briefly at difficult features so the software receives multiple frames, but do not hold the scanner so close or far away that it leaves the specified working range.
Use overlapping passes
When the object can be repositioned, capture one pass for the exterior and another for the underside or interior. Keep recognizable geometry in both passes so the software has common features for alignment. Follow the device’s instructions for automatic alignment, markers or manual registration; workflows differ substantially between scanners.

If the preview freezes, jumps or begins to duplicate a region, stop moving. Return to a previously captured, recognizable area at the correct distance and let tracking reacquire before continuing. If the problem repeats, change the setup, add approved features or markers, or alter lighting as directed by the manufacturer. Continuing through a tracking failure often creates a seam that is harder to repair than a short rescan.

Control lighting and background
Use even illumination without strong reflections or rapidly changing shadows. Avoid overexposure. For workflows that are sensitive to background contrast, a neutral background can prevent the object from blending into or competing with the scene. These changes address capture reliability; they do not repair data already missing from the mesh.
Surface preparation: when spray or treatment is appropriate
Surface treatment is a capture aid, not a universal cure. Shiny or glossy objects can produce uneven scans, and transparent or specular materials may require a scanning spray in workflows documented for those materials. The correct product, thickness, drying time and removal method depend on the scanner and the object.
- Read the current manual for the exact scanner and scanning mode.
- Confirm that the coating is removable and safe for the object’s finish.
- Apply a thin, even layer only where the instructions call for it; excessive coating can obscure fine detail.
- Do not spray a surface merely because a different scanner uses spray. Some systems solve the same problem through exposure, lighting or mode changes.
- Test on an inconspicuous area when the object is valuable, porous or chemically sensitive.
For dark or mixed glossy-and-matte objects, changing background and contrast may help a laser scanner produce denser lines. If the device still cannot obtain stable returns, a compatible removable treatment may be needed, but only when the manufacturer supports it.

What hole filling actually does
Hole-filling algorithms infer a surface between the edges of an opening. They can close a mesh for visualization, 3D printing or downstream software that requires a watertight object, but they cannot recover a hidden cavity, undercut or edge that the scanner never observed. A cap may be flat, curved or bridged according to the algorithm rather than the object’s true shape.

When filling is reasonable
- The opening is small and the surrounding surface provides a clear, plausible continuation.
- The repaired mesh is for appearance, approximate volume or a use that does not depend on the missing detail.
- You have verified the result against the physical object or a reliable drawing.
When to recapture instead
- The hole lies on a functional mating surface, measurement datum, edge or thin wall.
- The area contains a cavity, undercut, lettering or other geometry that an algorithm cannot infer safely.
- The filled region will be used for dimensional inspection, engineering, tooling or medical decisions.
Use smoothing conservatively
Smoothing can reduce random noise and make a surface easier to inspect, but it rounds sharp edges, softens embossed details and can change dimensions. Apply the smallest region and strength that solves the visible problem. Compare the result with the unsmoothed mesh and the object before exporting.
Recapture or repair? Choose by the information you need
| Remedy | What it changes | Advantages | Risks and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Additional scan pass | Adds new measured observations. | Preserves real recesses and edges when the sensor can see them. | Requires access, stable tracking and suitable surface conditions. |
| Surface preparation | Changes how the scanner receives light or laser returns. | Can make glossy, transparent or dark areas measurable. | Model-specific; an unsuitable coating can damage or obscure the object. |
| Lighting or background adjustment | Improves signal and tracking conditions. | Non-destructive and often quick to test. | Cannot reveal a physically occluded surface. |
| Calibration | Resets internal scanner parameters. | Useful for broad roughness or graininess. | Must use the correct target and procedure for the device. |
| Hole filling | Creates inferred geometry across a gap. | Can make a mesh watertight when recapture is impractical. | Does not restore measurements and may cap a cavity incorrectly. |
| Smoothing | Reduces high-frequency surface variation. | Improves visual cleanliness and can reduce noise. | May erase fine details, sharpened edges and dimensional accuracy. |
Quality checks before you export
- Check for remaining openings: use the software’s boundary or watertightness inspection, then view the model from inside and outside if possible.
- Check repaired regions: compare every filled or smoothed area with photographs, measurements or the physical object.
- Check edges and small features: inspect holes, slots, lettering, mating faces and thin walls at high zoom.
- Check alignment: look for doubled edges, steps or seams where separate passes meet.
- Check scale and dimensions: calibration and alignment errors can make a visually attractive model unsuitable for measurement.
- Check the intended use: a cosmetic model can tolerate an inferred cap that an engineering or inspection model cannot.
Preventing holes and roughness on the next scan
Before pressing capture, read the current manual for the scanner’s working distance, supported materials, calibration procedure, tracking options and recommended lighting. Clean the object, plan views of every hidden surface and prepare a neutral setup. During capture, keep motion steady, maintain overlap and watch the live preview for holes or tracking jumps instead of waiting until the final mesh.
Save the raw scan data before aggressive processing. If a later software version changes alignment or reconstruction behavior, the original observations let you try again without repeating the physical capture. Record which surfaces were treated, which passes covered them and where the scanner was repositioned; that information makes a targeted rescan much faster.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Bottom line
Fix the cause before the appearance. A hole is usually a visibility or coverage failure, while widespread roughness points toward motion, distance, lighting, reflectance or calibration. Add measured views whenever you can. Fill holes and smooth surfaces only after recapture is impractical, and approve every repaired area against the object and the purpose of the model.
