A monitor advertised as “up to 210Hz” will show 210Hz only when the selected resolution, input, cable path, graphics output and software mode all support it. Start in Settings > System > Display > Advanced display: select the affected monitor and see which refresh rates Windows offers at its current resolution. If 210Hz is absent, check the monitor’s exact manual and input limits before changing hardware. If it appears but is not selected, choose it, then isolate cables, adapters, ports and GPU settings if the rate will not hold.

What “stuck at 60Hz” usually means

Refresh rate is the number of times the display can update each second. A 60Hz setting updates 60 times per second; a 210Hz setting is a substantially faster mode. The number printed on a product page is not a promise that every resolution and every input can run at 210Hz. It normally describes a particular timing documented by the manufacturer.

With the exact monitor model, resolution, graphics card, Windows version and connection unknown, no single cause can be confirmed. The practical possibilities are narrower than they first appear:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Windows is using a 60Hz mode or the wrong display in a multi-monitor setup.
  • The selected resolution and the monitor input do not expose a 210Hz mode.
  • A cable, dock, dongle, adapter or output port is preventing the high-rate mode from being negotiated.
  • The GPU control panel is selecting a different mode from Windows.
  • In a specific Windows 11 game, Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) is limiting the game’s maximum rate.

Follow the checks in that order. Each result tells you whether to continue in software, consult the monitor specification, or test the physical connection. Avoid changing several variables at once: if you replace a cable, change a port and lower the resolution together, you will not know which change mattered.

1. Check the mode Windows is actually offering

Microsoft’s refresh-rate instructions for Windows 10 and Windows 11 use the Advanced display page. Open it exactly as follows:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System, then Display.
  3. Choose Advanced display.
  4. If more than one monitor is connected, select the display that is limited to 60Hz.
  5. Read the current resolution and refresh rate. Open the refresh-rate menu and choose the highest desired value that Windows lists for that resolution.

Windows builds this menu from the modes the display reports as available. Therefore, an absent 210Hz entry is useful evidence: the current display, resolution or connection is not exposing that mode to Windows. It is not proof that the panel itself is defective.

Microsoft also marks some entries with an asterisk when they do not support the current resolution. Choosing such an entry changes the resolution to reach that refresh rate. Treat the resolution and refresh-rate values as a pair, not as independent settings. If 210Hz appears only beside a lower resolution, the display’s documented timing—not the headline number—determines whether that trade-off is expected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm that you are changing the affected monitor. On a multi-monitor desktop, it is easy to inspect one screen while assuming the setting belongs to another. The selected display is shown in the Advanced display page, so compare its name with the monitor you are physically testing.

If the list contains 120Hz, 144Hz or another rate but not 210Hz, record the exact resolution and rate. That information is more useful to support staff than simply saying “high refresh does not work.” If the list contains 210Hz but Windows returns to 60Hz after you apply it, note whether the resolution also changes, whether the screen briefly blanks, and whether the problem returns after a restart.

Official instructions: Microsoft’s Windows refresh-rate guide.

2. Match the resolution and input to the monitor’s specification

Find the exact model number on the rear label, the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD) information page or your purchase record. Then open the manufacturer’s manual or specification table and look for a mode list that identifies:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Maximum refresh rate at each supported resolution.
  • Which physical input supports each mode.
  • Any distinction between native resolution, reduced resolution and overclocked modes.

“210Hz” by itself does not establish that 210Hz works at the monitor’s native resolution, through the input currently in use, or with every graphics output. The model-specific manual is authoritative for those combinations. Avoid relying on a universal rule about HDMI versus DisplayPort; connector names alone do not establish the limits of a particular monitor, graphics card or cable path.

If the manual lists 210Hz only for one input, connect the computer to that input directly and select it in the monitor’s input menu. If it lists 210Hz only at a particular resolution, set that resolution in Windows before checking Advanced display again. If the manual describes the top rate as an optional or overclocked mode, follow the manufacturer’s OSD procedure rather than inventing a timing in Windows.

Check whether the specification describes the rate as “maximum,” “up to,” or an optional overclock. Those terms indicate a ceiling or special mode, not necessarily the factory-selected setting. Some displays require an OSD toggle before the highest value is reported. Do not enable such a setting unless the manual names it and explains the supported resolution and input.

Also verify the active input on the monitor itself. A monitor can have several connectors, and the computer may be attached to one while the OSD is set to another. A direct connection to the documented input removes that ambiguity. If the manual does not clearly state which combination supports 210Hz, the exact model information is necessary before choosing a cable or adapter.

3. Verify the rate in your graphics control panel

NVIDIA graphics

Open NVIDIA Control Panel, choose Display > Change resolution, select the affected monitor, and inspect the refresh-rate list. Pick a rate that is both listed there and supported by the monitor manual. NVIDIA’s instructions are documented in To select a screen refresh rate.

NVIDIA also documents bandwidth-related mode restrictions in its Change Resolution help. A bandwidth limit can remove some combinations of resolution, refresh rate and color-depth options. NVIDIA suggests trying a lower resolution or refresh rate when bandwidth affects those choices. That guidance explains why a mode may disappear, but it does not prove bandwidth is the cause of your particular 60Hz cap.

In the NVIDIA panel, make sure the display name matches the monitor you intend to change. Compare the resolution and refresh-rate values with Windows rather than assuming one panel overrides every other setting. If a rate is available only after selecting a different resolution, record that pairing and compare it with the manufacturer’s table. A lower rate or resolution can be a diagnostic test, but it is not evidence that the monitor should run 210Hz at every setting.

AMD graphics

AMD notes that some displays may not have their maximum refresh rate selected by default. Use the Windows Advanced display procedure above, then apply the options appropriate to your AMD software version. AMD’s documented steps are in Adjusting Display Brightness, Resolution and Refresh Rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use only modes shown by Windows or the GPU panel and supported by the monitor documentation. If one panel offers 210Hz while the other does not, record the exact resolution and color settings shown in each; that discrepancy helps identify a mode or bandwidth constraint rather than a simple selection error. Do not create a custom timing merely to make a number appear. A custom mode can be unsupported even if the control panel accepts it.

4. Isolate the cable, adapter and port

A direct, methodical connection test is more informative than immediately buying a cable. Microsoft’s external-monitor troubleshooting sequence supports these checks:

  1. Turn off or disconnect the computer and monitor as appropriate, then reseat both ends of the video cable firmly.
  2. Temporarily remove docks, dongles, adapters, extension devices and other accessories. Connect the computer directly to the monitor.
  3. Try another cable that is known to work, while confirming that its connectors and documented capabilities match both devices.
  4. Try another graphics-card output port if one is available.
  5. Test the monitor with another computer or graphics source, if available.

Observe what changes after each test. If 210Hz appears after removing a dock, the accessory or its path is implicated. If the result changes with a different cable, the original cable or its connection is implicated. If every cable and port behaves the same on one computer but the monitor works at 210Hz on another system, investigate the first computer’s output or configuration. If the limitation follows the monitor across systems, recheck its input selection and manual before considering a hardware fault.

Keep the test path simple: one computer output, one video cable and one monitor input. A dock may impose its own mode limit, and an adapter can change which display capabilities are reported. Disconnecting those devices does not prove they are faulty; it simply tells you whether the high-rate mode is available without them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When trying another output, use a port connected to the active graphics processor rather than an unrelated motherboard connector where applicable. The useful comparison is whether the same monitor and documented mode appear through a different output on the same computer. Record which port produced which list of modes.

Microsoft’s full procedure is available in Troubleshoot external monitor connections in Windows.

When a replacement cable is reasonable

If the high-rate mode still does not appear, test a known-good cable that meets the monitor and graphics-card specifications. This is a diagnostic step, not a guarantee that a generic cable will unlock 210Hz. Confirm the connector type, the monitor input’s documented mode and the graphics output’s capabilities first. Keep the test direct: computer to monitor, with no dock or adapter in between.

A cable swap is most informative when everything else remains unchanged. Use the same resolution, input and output port for both tests. If the second cable produces the expected mode, keep it only after confirming that it is suitable for the documented combination; do not infer a universal cable rule from one successful setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Check Windows 11 Dynamic Refresh Rate only when the symptom is game-specific

Windows 11 includes Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR), which automatically adjusts refresh rate based on activity. Microsoft says DRR requires a variable-refresh-rate-capable display and at least 120Hz support, and that it can limit the maximum refresh rate in some games.

DRR is therefore a targeted check, not a general explanation for a desktop that offers only 60Hz. If Windows shows a high rate on the desktop but a particular Windows 11 game remains capped, disable DRR temporarily and test that game again. If the desktop itself never lists 210Hz, return to the resolution, input and connection checks instead.

Separate a desktop limitation from a game limitation. First confirm the rate visible in Advanced display, then launch the affected game. If only that title behaves differently, note whether the cap follows the game or appears across all applications. DRR is relevant to the former situation; it does not explain why Windows fails to expose 210Hz at all.

The mode appears, applies briefly, then returns to 60Hz Reseat the cable, remove intermediaries, test another suitable cable or port, and confirm the selected mode is supported at that resolution.

Why a 210Hz label does not settle the diagnosis

Maximum refresh rate is conditional. A monitor can advertise a top rate that applies to one input and one timing while offering lower rates at other resolutions or through another connection. Windows exposes the modes reported by the active display path, and the GPU panel may further constrain combinations affected by available bandwidth.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That is why purchasing a cable or forcing a custom timing before checking the manual is inefficient. The same 60Hz symptom can result from a simple Windows selection, an unsupported resolution/input combination, an intermediary device, or a port-specific limitation. The tests above separate those cases without assuming which one applies.

The advertised number also does not identify whether the monitor needs a special OSD option. A documented overclock mode may have different conditions from the ordinary factory modes. Treat the specification table as a matrix of resolution, input and refresh rate rather than a single headline figure.

What not to do

  • Do not assume every HDMI or DisplayPort connection supports the monitor’s headline refresh rate.
  • Do not treat an asterisked Windows mode as a free upgrade; Microsoft says it may change the resolution.
  • Do not create arbitrary custom timings as a routine fix. Confirm supported timings in the monitor manual and use the monitor or GPU manufacturer’s guidance.
  • Do not use a dock, dongle or adapter during diagnosis unless the manufacturer’s documentation confirms the required mode.
  • Do not interpret a game-only cap as proof that the desktop connection is limited; check DRR when the symptom is confined to Windows 11 games.
  • Do not replace several components simultaneously. A controlled one-change-at-a-time test leaves you with evidence about the failing part.

A concise recovery path

  1. In Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, select the correct monitor and record its resolution and available rates.
  2. Look up the exact model’s manual and confirm 210Hz for that resolution and input.
  3. Choose the corresponding rate in Windows, then cross-check it in NVIDIA Control Panel or follow AMD’s documented Windows procedure.
  4. Connect the computer directly, reseat the cable, remove accessories, test another suitable cable and try another GPU output.
  5. Test another computer if possible to determine whether the limitation follows the monitor, cable path or original system.
  6. If only a Windows 11 game is capped, test with Dynamic Refresh Rate disabled.

Stop when the monitor runs the documented mode reliably. If no tested connection exposes 210Hz and the manual says the current resolution and input should support it, the remaining evidence points to a monitor, cable path or graphics-output problem that requires the manufacturer’s model-specific support process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my 210Hz monitor showing only 60Hz in Windows?

Windows may have selected 60Hz, you may be viewing the wrong monitor, or 210Hz may not be available at the current resolution and input. Check Advanced display first, then compare the exact model’s manual and test a direct connection.

Why is 210Hz not showing in Windows?

The active resolution, monitor input, cable path, adapter, dock or GPU output may not be exposing that mode. Verify the model-specific specification and test the computer directly with another suitable cable or port.

Can any DisplayPort or HDMI cable unlock 210Hz?

No universal cable rule can be applied. Use the monitor manual and graphics-card specifications to identify the required connector and mode, then test a known-good cable that meets both devices’ documented requirements.

Should I lower the resolution to get 210Hz?

Only if the monitor’s specification lists 210Hz at that lower resolution and you accept the trade-off. An asterisked Windows mode can change resolution, so treat both settings as a pair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does NVIDIA Control Panel not show the same refresh rates as Windows?

The panels may be presenting different resolution, color or bandwidth combinations. Compare the exact settings, select the affected display, and use only modes supported by the monitor manual.

Could a dock or adapter be limiting my refresh rate?

It is possible. Disconnect docks, dongles and adapters and connect the computer directly to the monitor. If 210Hz then appears, investigate whether the intermediary supports the required mode.

Why is my desktop at a high refresh rate but a Windows 11 game is capped?

Dynamic Refresh Rate may be limiting that game. Microsoft recommends disabling DRR temporarily when this game-specific symptom occurs. DRR is not a general explanation for a desktop that offers only 60Hz.

Should I create a custom 210Hz resolution?

Not as a routine fix. First confirm the supported timing in the monitor manual and follow the monitor or GPU manufacturer’s guidance. An arbitrary custom timing may be unsupported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the monitor works at 210Hz on another computer?

Compare the original computer’s output port, GPU control-panel mode, resolution and connection path with the working system. The difference points toward the original system or its cable path rather than proving the monitor is defective.

The Bottom Line

A 210Hz monitor is not automatically a 210Hz display at every setting. Select the correct monitor in Windows Advanced display, match resolution and input to the model’s manual, cross-check the GPU panel, then remove adapters and test the cable and ports one at a time. Use the Windows 11 DRR check only when the cap occurs in a particular game. If the documented 210Hz mode never appears after those tests, contact the monitor manufacturer with the model, resolution, input and connection results.
