Why Your 200Hz Monitor Is Only Showing 60Hz—and How to Fix It

A 200Hz rating is the monitor’s maximum in supported configurations, not a guarantee that every connected PC will offer 200Hz automatically. Windows may be set to 60Hz, the monitor may need a model-specific menu setting, or a port, cable, adapter, resolution, or graphics setting may limit the available modes. Start by checking Windows’ selected display and refresh rate; if 200Hz is missing, work through the monitor manual and the full connection path before changing drivers or buying hardware.

Why a 200Hz monitor can show 60Hz

Windows can select 60Hz even when the monitor supports faster refresh rates. The desired mode may also depend on the selected resolution, the monitor’s input and on-screen display (OSD) settings, or the capabilities of the connection from the graphics card to the monitor. A dock, adapter, KVM, or converter in that path can matter too.

Windows lists modes exposed by the current display configuration; Microsoft explains that “The refresh rates that appear depend on your display and what it supports.” So if 200Hz is absent from the list, it is not currently available through that configuration. The list alone does not identify which component is limiting it.

Set and verify the refresh rate in Windows

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. If multiple displays are connected, select the 200Hz monitor from the display selector.
  2. Check the reported resolution and refresh rate. Under Choose a refresh rate, select the highest mode you want that is actually listed. Microsoft’s instructions apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11; Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025. Microsoft’s Windows refresh-rate instructions.
  3. Check the resolution again after changing the rate. Windows marks rates that do not support the current resolution with an asterisk and says selecting one changes the resolution. Use the resolution-and-refresh combination specified for your monitor rather than assuming every listed rate works at the current resolution.

If 200Hz is not listed, continue with the checks below instead of forcing an arbitrary custom timing.

Check the monitor’s manual and OSD

Look in the exact model’s manual for its supported resolution-and-refresh combinations, required input, color-depth limits, and any OSD option named overclocking, high refresh, or maximum refresh. Requirements are not universal.

Example: ASUS ROG Swift PG35V Series

The ASUS PG35V Series manual describes a “Max Refresh Rate 200 Hz” option for DisplayPort input only. For this model family, the manual says to activate it by pressing the OSD control twice, then enable the rate in NVIDIA Control Panel after reboot. It also limits the mode to YUV422 or RGB/YUV444 at 8-bit color depth or below. These instructions and limits apply to that product family; other monitors can differ. The manual says that if no image appears after enabling the mode, disconnect the DisplayPort cable and retry with a safer maximum refresh rate through the OSD.

Isolate the cable, ports, and devices in between

Check the entire route from the graphics output to the monitor input. Microsoft recommends checking that cables are secure, trying another cable or video port, and testing another system or display when possible. Microsoft’s external-monitor troubleshooting steps.

  • Reseat the cable at both ends. If practical, connect the monitor directly to the computer, temporarily bypassing a dock, dongle, adapter, KVM, or converter.
  • Try another known-good cable and another graphics output if available. Test the monitor on another computer, or test a different display on the current computer, to help narrow down where the issue lies.
  • Check the monitor manual and graphics hardware specifications before choosing a port or cable. The required connection depends on the monitor, graphics output, resolution, color depth, and any device in between. The ASUS example’s DisplayPort-only requirement is not a rule for all 200Hz monitors.

Check the graphics-card refresh-rate settings

NVIDIA

Open NVIDIA Control Panel > Display > Change resolution, select the monitor, and check the available refresh rates. NVIDIA’s control panel also shows the connector it detects for a display and notes that bandwidth limitations can affect which color-depth options appear. NVIDIA’s Change Resolution guidance.

Choose an available rate under Screen Refresh Rate, and consult the monitor manufacturer’s documentation for supported modes. AMD’s refresh-rate instructions.

When to troubleshoot graphics drivers

Driver troubleshooting is most relevant if 200Hz worked before and disappeared after an update, or if the display setup recently changed. Microsoft lists resetting the graphics driver, restarting, rolling back a driver, and reinstalling one among its troubleshooting options. Reset the graphics driver with Windows key + Ctrl + Shift + B; use the graphics-card vendor’s current instructions if reinstalling. A missing mode does not, by itself, prove the driver is at fault. Confirm the result—and distinguish refresh rate from frame rate

Return to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and confirm the selected monitor, resolution, and current refresh rate. That report tells you the display’s selected refresh rate. It does not establish how many frames a particular game is rendering; check the game’s or a GPU utility’s frame-rate counter for that separate figure.
