Why Your 180Hz Monitor Is Stuck at 60Hz—and How to Fix It

If your 180Hz monitor is running at 60Hz, first select the intended rate for the correct display in Windows. If 180Hz is missing from the list, the cause is usually somewhere in the complete display setup: the selected resolution, monitor input, graphics hardware, port, cable, adapter or dock, driver configuration, or a model-specific monitor setting. The title alone does not identify which part is limiting your setup, so work through the checks below rather than assuming you need a new cable.

Set the refresh rate in Windows first

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
  2. If you use more than one screen, choose the 180Hz monitor in the display selector.
  3. Under Choose a refresh rate, select 180Hz if it is listed, then apply the change.
  4. Check that the resolution is still the one you intend to use. Windows notes that a listed rate marked with an asterisk may change the resolution.

Windows shows rates available for the selected display configuration; it cannot offer a mode that the current setup does not expose. See Microsoft’s instructions for changing the display refresh rate.

If 180Hz is missing, check the supported mode

A monitor’s headline refresh rate does not necessarily apply at every resolution or through every input. Check the exact monitor’s manual or specifications for the refresh rates supported at your chosen resolution and on the input you are using. Then check that the computer’s graphics hardware and the whole connection path can output that same combination.

  • Confirm the monitor input in use, such as HDMI or DisplayPort, and whether its specifications list 180Hz at your selected resolution.
  • Check the graphics card’s output capabilities for that resolution and refresh rate.
  • Account for anything between the computer and monitor, including an adapter, dock, or hub; it may affect which modes are available.

Intel explains that available resolution and refresh-rate combinations depend on both the display and the computer configuration. Its troubleshooting advice includes trying a different display cable when a desired external-display mode is unavailable. That makes a cable swap a useful test, not a guarantee that buying a cable will fix the issue. See Intel’s guidance on changing display resolution and refresh rate.

Samsung 27" Odyssey G5 (G51F) Series QHD (1440P) Gaming Monitor | 180Hz, 1ms, AMD FreeSync, HDR10, Height Adj Stand, Black Equalizer, Virtual Aim Point, Auto Source Switch+ (LS27FG512ENXZA)
  • QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort

Test the connection and cable

  1. If possible, connect the monitor directly to the computer instead of routing the signal through a dock, adapter, or hub.
  2. Try another known-good cable that meets the monitor and graphics hardware makers’ requirements for the specific input, resolution, and refresh rate.
  3. Reopen Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and check the available rates again.

If you have another supported port or cable available, testing it before buying anything can help isolate the connection path. There is no single cable recommendation that fits every 180Hz monitor; the right requirements depend on the display, GPU output, resolution, and any equipment in between.

Check the graphics control panel

For an NVIDIA graphics card, open NVIDIA Control Panel > Display > Change resolution, select the relevant monitor, and inspect its refresh-rate options. If 180Hz is available, select it. NVIDIA’s control panel is another place to set the display mode, but it cannot overcome a limitation in the monitor, graphics hardware, input, or connection path. See NVIDIA’s instructions for changing resolution.

Look for model-specific monitor settings

Use the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD) and exact model manual to check settings related to input selection, DisplayPort, gaming modes, or refresh rate. These controls vary by model. For example, ASUS documents an XG27UCG setting called Frame Rate Boost whose supported refresh rate depends on a particular aspect-control setting. That example is specific to the XG27UCG; it does not establish that other monitors have the same control. Consult the manual for your exact model, such as ASUS’s XG27UCG support article.

Check Dynamic Refresh Rate on Windows 11 only if behavior varies

If Windows offers the expected desktop refresh rate but a particular app or content scenario still seems capped, check whether Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) is enabled. Microsoft says DRR requires a display with variable refresh rate (VRR) support and at least 120Hz support. It also notes that DRR can limit the maximum refresh rate for some content. If your system supports DRR, test whether disabling it changes the behavior; it is a troubleshooting check for this kind of content-specific symptom, not a universal fix for a missing 180Hz option. See Microsoft’s refresh-rate guidance.
