Why You Shouldn’t Run Some Appliances on a Power Station, Even If You Can

If an appliance plugs into your portable power station and turns on, that does not mean the pairing is safe or sensible. Whether a particular appliance is a suitable load depends on three things: the station’s continuous and surge output, the appliance’s startup demand, and how long you need it to run. Some appliance types deserve extra scrutiny, and a few situations call for a different backup plan altogether.

Why “it turns on” is not the test

A power station’s output ratings set the ceiling for what it can supply. Continuous output is the load it can deliver steadily. Surge output is a short-term higher limit, which matters because many motor-driven appliances draw more power for a moment when they start than they draw while running. A station can run an appliance once it has started and still be unable to start it, or it can start the appliance and then drain its battery far faster than you expected.

The Delaware homeowners emergency-preparedness handbook, an older document hosted by the NOAA Repository, uses a refrigerator to illustrate this gap between startup demand and running demand. The handbook also says equipment varies, so its example shows the principle rather than a specification for any refrigerator you own.

How to check a specific appliance against a specific station

Work from the labels and manuals, not from general wattage guesses. The table below lists the values to compare and where to find each one.

Value What it tells you Where to find it
Appliance rated input The power the appliance is designed to draw Appliance rating label and owner’s manual
Appliance startup demand The brief higher draw when a motor or compressor starts Appliance manual or manufacturer’s technical documentation; if not stated, treat startup demand as unknown and leave margin
Station continuous output The steady load the station can supply Station specification sheet and manual
Station surge output The short-term peak the station can supply during startup Station specification sheet and manual
Battery capacity The total energy available before recharging Station specification sheet
Runtime you need How long the appliance must run during an outage Your own plan; the station manual’s operating instructions describe how the station behaves under load

Use this sequence:

  1. Read the appliance’s rating label and find its rated input in watts or amps.
  2. Check the appliance manual for any stated startup or inrush figure. If none is given, do not assume the appliance is light to start.
  3. Open the station manual and confirm the continuous output and surge output in watts, plus the voltage and outlet types it supplies.
  4. Confirm the appliance’s running draw sits below the station’s continuous output with clear margin, and that its startup draw sits within the surge rating.
  5. Estimate runtime from battery capacity and the appliance’s draw, then compare the result with how long you actually need the appliance to run.
  6. Follow the station manual’s operating instructions. If the manufacturer says a load is not supported, that instruction governs.

Loads that deserve particular scrutiny

  • Refrigerators and freezers. Their compressors create the startup demand described above. Check the surge rating against the appliance’s startup figure before relying on a station for food storage, and use an appliance thermometer to monitor temperature during the outage.
  • Medical devices. The CDC notes that outages can be life-threatening for people who depend on home-use medical devices. Confirm both the device’s and the station’s specifications, and arrange a backup plan with the device’s provider rather than treating a station as a guaranteed solution.
  • Heating appliances. Heating elements draw substantial power. Do not treat a station as a home-heating source. The EPA warns against using combustion appliances such as gas stoves, ovens, barbecues, or dryers to heat a home during an outage.
  • Major appliances on extension cords. The U.S. Fire Administration advises plugging major appliances directly into a wall outlet and never using an extension cord with a major appliance, because the cord may overheat and start a fire. Its Appliance and Electrical Fire Safety page (last reviewed May 4, 2023) cites 2021 estimates of 24,200 residential building electrical fires reported to U.S. fire departments, which caused an estimated 295 deaths and 900 injuries. Those figures describe electrical fires generally, not power stations. For a station, follow the manuals rather than improvising a cord arrangement.

Indoor air: a station is not a generator

The EPA’s power outage guidance, last updated February 18, 2026, draws a clear line between battery or solar power stations and fuel-powered generators. It states: “They are often less powerful than traditional gas-powered generators; however, they do not generate toxic fumes, and so they can be used in indoor spaces, on balconies, or near doors, vents, and windows.” Fuel-powered portable generators should be run outdoors and far from buildings.

The absence of exhaust fumes does not make every load or connection suitable. The check-the-ratings steps above still apply, and the EPA’s warning about unvented combustion appliances for indoor cooking or heating still applies too.

A product-specific warning: Aeiusny 400W and 500W stations

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a warning on September 4, 2025 telling consumers to stop using Aeiusny 400W and 500W portable power stations because of fire and explosion risk. The CPSC reported 24 fires and explosions involving these stations, including three reports of smoke inhalation and burn injuries requiring medical attention and 10 reports of property damage totaling approximately $450,000. Those figures apply to the warned models and the period covered by the warning page, not to all power stations.

If you own one of these models, follow the CPSC’s instructions: stop using it, follow local hazardous-waste procedures, and contact your local collection center before taking the device there. Do not put a defective lithium-ion device in regular trash or general recycling.

What to prioritize during an outage

The CDC’s Power Sources page, dated April 18, 2024, notes that the average U.S. household loses about four hours of power each year. Because most outages are short, the CDC’s preparedness checklist emphasizes lower-demand items before high-draw appliances. Its suggestions include emergency lighting, power banks and adapters for phones, backup smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, appliance thermometers for refrigerators and freezers, and warm clothing. A power station can cover some of these needs, but these items often matter more than running an appliance from a battery.
