Why You Need a Solar Filter for Every Partial Phase of an Eclipse

Use a special-purpose solar filter whenever any part of the Sun’s bright face is visible. That means wearing compliant eclipse glasses or using a handheld solar viewer during every partial phase before and after totality, throughout any partial eclipse, and during the entire annular phase of an annular eclipse. The only direct-view exception is the brief total phase of a total solar eclipse, and only for an observer inside the path of totality after the Moon completely covers the bright face. Put the filter back on before the bright Sun reappears.

What “partial phase” means for eye safety

A solar eclipse is not automatically safe to watch because the Moon blocks part of the Sun. During a partial phase, an uncovered portion of the Sun’s photosphere remains intensely bright. Your eye can still receive damaging solar radiation through that opening, even if the Sun looks thinner, dimmer, or visually less impressive.

A total solar eclipse has a partial phase as the Moon moves in front of the Sun and another partial phase as it moves away. Filters remain necessary for both. If you are outside the path of totality, the Moon never completely covers the bright face from your location, so what you experience is a partial eclipse and you need protection throughout the event.

An annular eclipse is also never safe for unaided direct viewing without a filter. The Moon appears smaller than the Sun and leaves a bright ring, or “annulus,” visible at maximum eclipse. That ring is still direct sunlight; there is no filter-free interval.

  • 2023 ANNULAR AND 2024 TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSES - On October 14th 2023, an annular eclipse (when the sun forms a ring around the moon) will cross the United States from Oregon to Texas. We will then experience a once-in-a-generation Total Solar Eclipse on April 8th 2024 - the only USA total eclipse until August 23rd, 2044. You will be amazed as the moon completely blocks the sun during Totality, which lasts but mere minutes. Soluna Glasses are what you need to safely view both of these eclipses.

When can you take off eclipse glasses?

The narrow totality exception

You may remove a direct-view solar filter only during totality: the total phase of a total solar eclipse, viewed from inside the path of totality, when the Moon completely covers the Sun’s bright face. The scene becomes markedly dark and the bright photosphere disappears. This is the short interval when unaided direct viewing is safe.

Replace the filter immediately when any bright portion of the Sun returns. Do not wait for the Sun to become “mostly” visible or for the sky to brighten. The instant the bright face reappears, direct viewing without a filter is unsafe again. Totality’s duration depends on the particular eclipse and your location, so follow the event’s timing and local observing instructions rather than assuming a standard number of minutes.

What the exception does not cover

The totality rule applies to unaided viewing only. It does not make a camera, binocular, spotting scope, or telescope safe to use without a filter. Magnifying optics can concentrate sunlight and injure eyes or damage equipment even when the observer is wearing eclipse glasses.

Why ordinary sunglasses cannot replace an eclipse viewer

Regular sunglasses, including very dark or polarized pairs, are not designed to reduce the Sun’s radiation to a safe level for direct observation. The American Astronomical Society (AAS) says purpose-made solar viewers are at least 1,000 times darker than ordinary sunglasses. Darkness that feels comfortable in everyday sunlight is therefore not a meaningful safety test.

Homemade filters and improvised materials are equally unsuitable. Household plastics, smoked glass, photographic film, stacked sunglasses, and similar substitutes may transmit invisible ultraviolet or infrared radiation or have uneven filtering. You cannot judge their safety by looking through them at a lamp or by checking whether the Sun appears dim.

Choosing a safe product for unaided viewing

Eclipse glasses and handheld viewers

For looking directly at the Sun without optical magnification, use purpose-made eclipse glasses or a handheld solar viewer that conforms to ISO 12312-2. AAS identifies ISO 12312-2:2015 as the relevant international standard for filters used for direct observation of the Sun; AAS says the standard was affirmed in 2020 and applies internationally. An ISO standard is a technical benchmark, not a law, and local labeling or availability can differ by country.

Use the current AAS supplier guidance when buying. A printed “ISO 12312-2” statement on a package is not proof that the product was tested. AAS says manufacturers should have products tested by a properly accredited laboratory and publishes a list of manufacturers and publicly identified authorized resellers. Check the specific maker or reseller against that current list instead of trusting an unverified marketplace listing.

Checks before you look

  • Confirm that the maker or authorized seller appears in current AAS supplier guidance.
  • Read the product’s use and warning instructions; do not assume every solar viewer is intended for every application.
  • Hold the viewer up to a room light and inspect it for scratches, punctures, tears, loose seams, or other damage. Discard a damaged viewer rather than taping or patching it.
  • If you wear prescription glasses, keep them on and place the solar viewer over them if the design permits a secure fit.
  • Supervise children and make sure they understand that the filter must cover their eyes before they face the Sun.

How to use eclipse glasses safely

  1. Put the eclipse glasses or handheld viewer over your eyes before turning toward the Sun.
  2. Look only through the intact filtering material. Do not peek around its edges.
  3. When you finish, turn away from the Sun before removing the viewer.
  4. During totality, remove the viewer only after the bright face is completely covered. Put it back on before the first bright photosphere appears.
  5. When passing a viewer to another person, keep it pointed away from the Sun and have the next observer put it on before looking up.

Partial eclipses and the partial phases surrounding totality progress slowly enough that a group can share a limited number of direct-view viewers. Sharing does not change the wearing rule: every person must cover their eyes before looking at the Sun, and no one should watch while taking a viewer off or handing it over.

Filters for cameras, binoculars, and telescopes are different

Eclipse glasses are made for direct viewing by the unaided eye. They are not a filter for an optical instrument. Never look through a camera viewfinder, binoculars, telescope, spotting scope, or telephoto lens at the Sun while wearing eclipse glasses in front of your eyes. The instrument can focus sunlight into a concentrated beam that overwhelms the glasses and can cause severe eye injury.

For an instrument, use a solar filter designed for that specific equipment. It must fit securely over the front opening—the objective or aperture—before the instrument is pointed at the Sun. A filter placed at the eyepiece end can be exposed to concentrated heat and may fail suddenly, making it dangerous.

The ISO 12312-2 standard for direct-view solar viewers does not apply to optical filters. AAS notes that optical filters should instead be evaluated for appropriate transmission, uniformity, material, and surface-quality requirements and used exactly as designed. Because filter size, attachment, and optical construction vary, seek advice from an experienced astronomy equipment specialist before solar observing or imaging through magnifying optics.

Common mistakes and the safe correction

“The eclipse is only partial, so it is dim enough.”

Correction: Any visible bright solar face requires a special-purpose filter. Partial coverage changes the shape of the Sun, not the need for protection.

“Very dark sunglasses should work.”

Correction: Ordinary sunglasses are not solar viewers, regardless of tint or darkness. Use a purpose-made viewer that meets the appropriate standard and has a verifiable supply chain.

“My glasses say ISO 12312-2, so they must be safe.”

Correction: Treat the printed claim as something to verify, not as independent proof. Check the maker or publicly identified authorized reseller in current AAS guidance and inspect the product’s condition.

“I can wear eclipse glasses while using binoculars.”

Correction: Never combine unfiltered magnifying optics with eye-level eclipse glasses. Install a suitable front-aperture solar filter on the instrument instead.

“A small tear will not matter.”

Correction: Discard scratched, punctured, torn, or otherwise damaged viewers. Do not repair them for continued solar use.

“I can remove the viewer while still facing the Sun.”

Correction: Turn your head away first, then remove it. During totality, remove protection only after the bright face is entirely covered and replace it before reappearance.

A simple decision guide for eclipse day

  • Can you see any bright part of the Sun? Wear an intact, compliant direct-view solar filter.
  • Are you inside totality and is the bright face completely covered? Unaided direct viewing is safe only for that total phase; refit the viewer before bright light returns.
  • Are you outside the path of totality? Keep the filter on for the entire event.
  • Is a bright ring visible at maximum eclipse? That is an annular eclipse; keep the filter on continuously.
  • Are you using a camera, binocular, or telescope? Stop using direct-view glasses as protection and install a properly fitted solar filter over the instrument’s front aperture.

The AAS summarizes the rule plainly: “The only safe way to look directly at the uneclipsed, partially eclipsed, or annularly eclipsed Sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as ‘eclipse glasses’ or handheld solar viewers.” Applying that rule to every partial phase prevents the most common and most dangerous misunderstanding about eclipse watching.
