That normal adjustment in smell perception is one possible explanation—not proof that you have a smell disorder, or that other people necessarily notice an odor. If odor persists despite basic care, changes, or comes with a sudden increase in sweating, seek medical advice.
Why can’t I smell my own body odor?
People can become less responsive to smells they encounter repeatedly. A review of human studies describes how repeated exposure can reduce perceived odor intensity and behavioral response (review of olfactory habituation and adaptation). In one long-term experiment, participants exposed to one of two odorants at home for two weeks showed odor-specific reductions in sensitivity and perceived intensity; for most, reduced sensitivity remained evident for up to two weeks after exposure ended (study of adaptation after long-term odor exposure).

That experiment tested particular odorants, not participants’ own body odor. It supports adaptation as a plausible explanation for why a familiar smell might be less noticeable to you; it does not establish that everyone who misses their own odor has a smell disorder, or that others can smell it.
What causes body odor?
Body odor often develops when sweat interacts with bacteria and yeasts on the skin. Heat, exercise, hormonal changes, some medicines, and some health conditions can also contribute. Odor alone cannot identify the cause (NHS guidance on body odor; American Academy of Dermatology guidance on sweating).

What can you do about body odor?
Wash, dry, and change clothes
Wash the armpits, groin, and feet with soap, then dry them thoroughly. Change and wash clothes regularly. Breathable fabrics and moisture-wicking socks can help manage moisture. A pharmacist can advise on gentler soap substitutes if ordinary soap irritates your skin (NHS guidance).
Choose a product for the job
Antiperspirants reduce sweating; deodorants address odor. Some products do both, so check the label and follow its directions. The American Academy of Dermatology puts the distinction plainly: “Antiperspirants help reduce sweating. Deodorants don’t.” (AAD self-care guidance).

When choosing a product, consider its intended function, active ingredients and directions, the body area it is meant for, and your skin’s sensitivity. If you need more help controlling sweat, ask a pharmacist about stronger antiperspirants or sweat shields; for foot odor, ask whether foot powder is suitable.

Be cautious with fragranced products on sensitive skin
Fragranced deodorant can irritate sensitive groin skin. The AAD also cautions against applying whole-body deodorant indiscriminately; use products as directed and consider the intended area (AAD guidance on whole-body deodorant, updated May 16, 2025).

When should you seek medical advice?
Consult a clinician if odor persists despite self-care, your usual smell changes, or sweating suddenly increases. New or worsening odor can have varied causes, so evaluation is more appropriate than trying to diagnose the cause from smell alone. NIH News in Health also advises medical evaluation for new or worsening body odor (“Smelling Sickness,” September 2018).
If you cannot smell ordinary odors or familiar smells seem distorted, a smell disorder is one possibility. A clinician can assess the problem; simply not noticing your own body odor is not enough to establish a smell disorder (National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders information on smell disorders).
