Removing the stray carets fixed the malformed login data; adding -L tells curl to follow the redirect. The correct fix for your router still depends on its exact form fields, cookies, tokens and JavaScript.
What -d actually does
curl’s -d (or --data) option sends an HTTP request body and, by default, makes the request a POST with application/x-www-form-urlencoded content. It transmits the data you provide; it does not repair copied shell escapes, add hidden fields, create a browser session or execute JavaScript. Therefore, changing to -X POST does not correct an incorrect body: -d has already selected POST.
Read the response before changing the command
Use headers and the response status to determine whether the router accepted the request, rejected it, or is sending you elsewhere:

HTTP/1.1 302 Moved Temporarily
Location: /start.ghtmlA 302 is a redirect, not the final page. Without -L (or --location), curl stops after displaying that response. Follow it and inspect the final request:

'http://ROUTER_ADDRESS/'For 301, 302 and 303 redirects, curl normally changes the redirected request to GET. Do not assume that the original POST body is sent again; confirm the router’s observed flow.

Construct the form body exactly
Remove copied caret characters
The example command contained caret characters between values. The poster reported that removing those carets fixed the initial login problem. Do not copy browser- or shell-escaped characters into the HTTP body unless they are genuinely part of a value.
Encode reserved characters
--data expects an already URL-encoded value. Passwords or usernames containing spaces, ampersands, plus signs, equals signs or other reserved characters can therefore be split or interpreted incorrectly. Encode individual fields with --data-urlencode:

'http://ROUTER_ADDRESS/'This is an illustrative shape, not a verified command for every ZXHN H108N or any other router. Add fields such as frashnum only when your own form submission includes and requires them.
Reproduce the browser request, not just its visible fields
- Open developer tools. In the browser’s Network panel, load the router login page and submit it once.
- Record the request URL and method. The POST target may differ from the page URL.
- Copy the complete form payload. Include hidden inputs such as
Frm_Logintoken, field names, and the content type. - Check response headers. Note the status,
Locationand anySet-Cookievalues. - Compare the final page. A login-looking HTML response is not proof of authentication; verify that the redirected page is the authenticated interface.
The SitePoint example used a POST to http://192.168.1.1/ with fields including frashnum, action=login, Frm_Logintoken, Username and Password. Those names and that endpoint belong to that reported ZXHN H108N V2.5 interface; other firmware can use different names and paths.

Preserve cookies when the router uses a session
Some interfaces issue a cookie when the login page is fetched and expect the same session on the POST. Test that possibility by saving and reusing a cookie jar:

'http://ROUTER_ADDRESS/'This is a diagnostic pattern, not proof that the router in the forum thread required cookies. Check the browser trace for a cookie dependency. Treat the cookie jar as sensitive and delete it after troubleshooting.

Do not hard-code stale hidden tokens
Frm_Logintoken was shown as a changing hidden value in the discussion. Fetch a fresh login page and use the value submitted by that session. Its generation and lifetime were not established for all firmware versions, so a token copied from an earlier request may be rejected. Never publish real credentials, tokens or session cookies.
Why “enable SSID and click submit” is a different problem
Logging in and changing wireless settings are separate requests. A router’s Submit button may call JavaScript such as pageSubmit() or ESSID_Enable(), alter fields, and post to another endpoint with a larger payload. A generic -X POST neither runs that JavaScript nor supplies omitted fields.
Capture the network request generated when you enable the SSID in the UI. Recreate its actual URL, method, body, cookies, token and headers only after login succeeds. The SitePoint discussion does not provide a verified minimal SSID-change command, so do not assume that a guessed POST is safe; a malformed configuration request could disable wireless access.
A practical comparison checklist
- Exact POST URL and HTTP method
- Every form field, including hidden fields and their current values
- Content type and whether each value is URL-encoded
- Fresh token and session cookies
- Initial status code, redirect target and final URL
- Whether the final response is genuinely authenticated
Security considerations
- Credentials in command arguments can appear in shell history or local process listings.
- Use a safer local credential method where practical, and remove history entries containing secrets.
- Run these requests only against equipment you own or are authorized to administer.
- Use the router’s address and protocol shown by your own browser trace; do not assume every device uses the same endpoint.
What the 2019 example does—and does not—prove
The discussion concerns one ZXHN H108N V2.5 interface on April 11, 2019. It establishes the reported caret fix and the observed 302 redirect to /start.ghtml, but it does not establish current firmware behavior, universal token rules, or a general router-login recipe. curl’s online manual is continuously updated, so verify option details against the curl version installed on your system.

The Bottom Line
-d already performs a URL-encoded POST. Correct the body, use fresh fields and tokens from your router’s form, preserve cookies when required, and add -L when the response redirects. Diagnose the exact browser request before attempting later configuration actions.
