Setting -Xmx3G asks Java to make up to 3 GB available to the Minecraft server heap. It does not reserve exactly 3 GB for the entire Java process, and it cannot override a 32-bit Java runtime, a hosting-panel or container limit, or a computer that lacks enough free memory for Java, the operating system, and other processes.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Find the ceiling first: confirm that you are changing the dedicated server’s startup command, verify a 64-bit Java runtime, check the host’s memory cap, and leave physical-RAM headroom. Then set -Xms and -Xmx to values the machine and host can actually support.

What -Xmx3G actually controls
Java divides memory into several areas. The heap stores Minecraft world data, entities, chunks, plugins and other Java-managed objects. The -Xmx option sets the heap’s maximum size; -Xms sets its initial size. A fixed-size server command therefore commonly looks like this:
java -Xms3G -Xmx3G -jar paper.jar --nogui
Paper’s documented example uses the same form with 4G values: java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar paper.jar --nogui. Replace those numbers only after checking the available memory on your machine and any limit imposed by your host.

| Option | Meaning | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
-Xms3G |
Initial Java heap size | Not the total memory used by the process |
-Xmx3G |
Maximum Java heap size | Not a guarantee that Java can reserve 3 GB |
| Process working set | Heap plus native JVM memory, thread stacks, mapped files and other allocations | It can exceed -Xmx |
Paper notes that a Java process normally uses a little more memory than the -Xmx value. Native components, garbage-collection structures, thread stacks and the server’s runtime libraries all need room outside the heap. Consequently, a host limit set to exactly 3 GB can still terminate a server configured with -Xmx3G.
Make sure you are changing the server, not the game client
The Minecraft Launcher’s JVM arguments apply to the client installation selected there. A separately launched Paper, Spigot, Fabric, Forge or vanilla server has its own batch file, shell script, control-panel command or service definition. Editing the launcher does not automatically change that server.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check the actual launch command
- Stop the server cleanly.
- Find the command that starts the server. Look for a Windows
.batfile, a Linux or macOS shell script, a system-service definition, or the startup field in your hosting panel. - Confirm that the command contains the server’s jar and the memory flags, for example
java -Xms3G -Xmx3G -jar paper.jar --nogui. - Change the values in that command or in the panel’s Java-arguments field, then save and restart.
- Read the first lines of the new log to confirm that the intended Java executable and server jar were used.
If a panel generates the command automatically, a manually edited script may be ignored. In that case, use the panel’s dedicated memory or Java-arguments setting and check the generated startup line after restarting.
The four ceilings that can prevent a 3 GB heap
| Ceiling | Typical sign | What to verify | Reversible fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Java process architecture | Heap reservation fails at startup, especially with a 32-bit runtime | Whether the server reports a 64-bit VM | Install a compatible 64-bit Java runtime and point the script to it |
| Virtual address space | Could not reserve enough space for object heap |
Free virtual memory and competing processes | Close processes, lower the heap, or use a system with more capacity |
| Physical RAM | Startup failure, swapping, or operating-system out-of-memory termination | Installed and currently available RAM, plus other workloads | Lower -Xms/-Xmx or add compatible memory |
| Panel or container limit | Server is killed despite apparently sufficient machine RAM | Configured memory cap and the host’s accounting method | Raise the cap or leave more headroom above -Xmx |
These limits are independent. A 64-bit Java installation cannot bypass a 2 GB container limit, and a generous panel limit cannot create physical RAM that the computer does not have.
Step 1: verify that Java is 64-bit
A 32-bit process has a much smaller address space than a 64-bit process. Minecraft Help states that 32-bit operating systems have 4 GB of RAM as the maximum, while Oracle’s Java guidance explains that the process data model constrains the heap. In practice, a 32-bit runtime may fail before a nominal 3 GB heap can be reserved because the process also needs address space for the JVM and native libraries.

- Open the same terminal, script environment or panel console that starts the server.
- Run
java -version, or run the full path to the Java executable used by the startup script. - Look for wording such as
64-Bit Server VM. If the output identifies a 32-bit VM, do not keep increasing-Xmx. - Install a 64-bit Java version compatible with your Minecraft server version.
- Update the startup script or service to call that executable explicitly, then run
java -versionthrough the same path again.
It is common to have several Java installations. Checking a Java version in one terminal and starting the server with another executable can produce a false sense that the script is using 64-bit Java. Verify the executable named in the actual server command.

Step 2: inspect the hosting panel or container limit
Managed panels and containers can enforce a hard memory ceiling that is lower than the number in your command. The panel may count the whole process, not just the Java heap. Because the process can exceed -Xmx, a 3 GB cap is unsafe for a server configured with -Xmx3G.
What to check
- Open the server’s resource, memory, plan or limits page.
- Record the exact cap and its unit. Some panels show a limit for the entire instance rather than for Java’s heap.
- Check whether the panel reserves memory for the operating system, backups, databases or other services running in the same instance.
- Review the panel’s event log for an out-of-memory stop or an exit without a normal Minecraft crash report.
Paper recommends checking system logs, reducing -Xmx by roughly 1–2 GB as an initial move, or increasing or disabling the panel limit where that is appropriate. On managed hosting, only the provider can raise the limit. Do not assume that changing the command is enough when the host account itself is capped.
Leave process headroom
If a host offers 4 GB to the whole server process, a safer heap is below 4 GB, not equal to it. The exact margin depends on the Java version, server type, plugins, thread count and workload, so treat the panel limit as a ceiling for the complete process. Start lower, observe stable operation, and increase gradually only when the host reports sufficient unused memory.
Step 3: compare the heap with the computer’s physical RAM
Oracle warns that a single Java application’s heap should never be set to all physical RAM: the operating system, other processes and other JVM operations also need memory. Minecraft Help gives a general recommendation of no more than half of physical RAM for a Java application on a 64-bit system.

| Machine condition | Why a 3 GB heap may be unsuitable | Initial approach |
|---|---|---|
| 4 GB total RAM | Half-RAM guidance is about 2 GB, leaving little room for the OS and native memory | Use a substantially smaller heap or move the server to a larger machine |
| 8 GB total RAM | 3 GB is below the broad half-RAM ceiling, but other applications still reduce available headroom | Close competing workloads and monitor; lower the heap if the host or OS reports pressure |
| 16 GB or more | Physical RAM is less likely to be the first ceiling, but a panel cap or 32-bit Java can still fail | Verify Java architecture and host limits before increasing the heap |
The table is a starting framework, not a performance promise. A desktop running a browser, backup software and a database has less server headroom than the same computer at an idle prompt. Conversely, a dedicated machine with few background services can give the server more room within the same installed-RAM total.
Measure available memory before changing flags
- On Windows, open Task Manager and inspect the Memory view while the server is stopped and while it is running.
- On Linux, use your distribution’s memory monitor or a command such as
free -hto see total, used and available memory. - On macOS, use Activity Monitor’s Memory pane and watch memory pressure rather than relying only on the installed-RAM figure.
Record the result during the workload that matters to you: world generation, player joins, scheduled backups and other services can change the available margin.
Step 4: choose -Xms and -Xmx values that can start reliably
Matching values such as -Xms3G -Xmx3G give the server a fixed-size heap. Administrators often use this arrangement to avoid heap growth during operation, but matching values do not bypass any memory ceiling. Both must fit within the Java architecture, host limit and physical-RAM budget.
- Start with a value clearly below the suspected ceiling. If a 4 GB whole-process host limit is involved, do not begin with a 4 GB heap.
- Set both flags to the same conservative value if you want a fixed heap, for example
-Xms2G -Xmx2Gon a machine where 3 GB cannot start reliably. - Restart and allow the server to complete startup.
- Test the normal workload and check system or panel memory readings.
- Increase in small steps only if there is enough headroom. Stop increasing when the host, OS or logs show pressure.
If startup fails, lower both values for the next test. Changing only -Xmx while leaving an oversized -Xms can still make Java request more memory than the machine or host can provide at launch.
Step 5: match the error to the cause
Could not reserve enough space for object heap
This message means Java could not reserve the requested heap. Check the 32-bit-versus-64-bit runtime first, then available virtual and physical memory, and finally any panel or container cap. Close competing applications or lower both heap flags before trying again. If the same command works at a lower value, the failure is a capacity ceiling rather than a syntax problem.

The process is killed without a normal crash log
An operating-system or panel out-of-memory killer may terminate Java before Minecraft can write a crash report. On Linux systems where the command is available, inspect the kernel log with:
dmesg -T | grep -i killed
Also check the hosting panel’s event history. If the kernel or panel records an out-of-memory kill, reduce the heap and remove competing workloads, or raise the enforced limit.
The server starts but appears to use almost all assigned memory
High reported usage alone is not necessarily a fault. Paper explains that Java may retain heap space for garbage-collection efficiency, so the process can look full even when it is healthy. Treat it as a problem when you see out-of-memory crashes, severe swapping, repeated panel kills or consistently bad garbage-collection times. In that case, reduce the heap, investigate plugins and workloads, or move to a machine with more headroom.
The command is rejected or the value seems ignored
- Check the spelling and placement of the flags. They belong before
-jarin the usual Java command. - Confirm that the panel did not replace your command with a generated startup template.
- Make sure you edited the script for the server instance that is actually running.
- Check for a second service or scheduled task starting another copy with different arguments.
Paper, Spigot, vanilla and modded servers
The JVM options have the same meaning across server implementations, but the file or interface that supplies them differs. Paper’s documented command is:
java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar paper.jar --nogui
For Spigot, vanilla, Fabric or Forge, use the jar name and startup mechanism supplied by that project or your host. Do not copy a Paper-specific filename into another server and assume it is the active command. Locate the executable script, service definition or panel startup field, then verify the complete command after saving.

Modded servers can have additional native libraries, loaders and worker threads. That increases the importance of leaving room above the heap for non-heap memory. A 3 GB heap on a lightly loaded vanilla server and a 3 GB heap on a heavily modded server can have very different total-process requirements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsClient allocation is separate from dedicated-server allocation
Minecraft Java Edition 26.1 raised the default client allocation to 4 GB. That launcher change concerns the game client. It does not rewrite the startup flags for a separately launched dedicated server. A server still uses the Java command, service or panel that starts its jar. If a server refuses -Xmx3G, changing the client’s allocated memory will not fix the server’s architecture, host limit or physical-RAM problem.
Decide whether to reduce the heap, raise a limit or upgrade hardware
| Option | Best when | Trade-off | Reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|
Lower -Xms/-Xmx |
Java starts at a lower value or the machine is short on available memory | Less heap headroom for large worlds, plugins or bursts of activity | Fully reversible by editing the command |
| Raise the panel or container limit | The physical machine has capacity but the account or instance is capped | May require a larger plan or provider action; the whole process still needs headroom | Usually reversible in the panel or by the provider |
| Close or move other workloads | Browsers, databases, backups or other servers consume the missing memory | Those workloads must run elsewhere or at different times | Reversible operational change |
| Add compatible RAM | Physical memory is the limiting ceiling and the computer supports an upgrade | Requires checking motherboard, memory type, capacity limits and operating-system support | Hardware purchase and installation are not as easily reversible |
A memory kit such as 16GB DDR4 is only an example category, not a universal recommendation. Check the motherboard or computer specifications for supported DDR generation, module capacity, speed, slot availability and operating-system limits before buying.
A practical diagnostic checklist
- Write down the exact server command or panel startup field.
- Confirm that the command starts the dedicated server jar, not the Minecraft Launcher client.
- Run
java -versionthrough the executable named by that command and verify a 64-bit VM. - Record the host or container’s complete-process memory cap.
- Measure installed and available physical RAM with other services stopped and running.
- Remember that the Java process can exceed
-Xmx; do not set the heap equal to a whole-process cap. - Set conservative, matching
-Xmsand-Xmxvalues if a fixed heap is desired. - Restart and inspect the startup log, panel events and operating-system memory readings.
- If Java cannot reserve the heap, lower both values and retest.
- If the process is killed, inspect system and panel logs for an out-of-memory event.
- Increase the panel limit, add compatible RAM or relocate the server only after identifying which ceiling was reached.
Why simply typing 3G often fails
The number in a startup flag is only one part of the memory budget. A 32-bit Java process may not have enough address space. A container may terminate a process as soon as its total usage crosses a lower cap. A small computer may need most of its RAM for the operating system and other applications. Even when all three conditions are favorable, Java’s native memory and thread overhead sit outside the heap.
Once you separate those ceilings, the fix is predictable: configure the server command you actually run, use a compatible 64-bit runtime, reserve less than the host and machine can safely provide, and use logs to distinguish a reservation failure from an external out-of-memory kill.
