Claiming a cabin for yourself is a separate process involving the Make Yourself At Home quest and a repaired cabin. “House” can mean several different things
The game’s official descriptions use cabins for the buildings you renovate and decorate to attract visitors. Nintendo’s Switch product description says, “Renovate cabins and decorate them to attract new visitors to the island—like Hello Kitty’s twin sister, Mimmy!” The official game site similarly describes decorating cabins as part of creating an island paradise.
That wording matters because a player may call any residence a house while the game is presenting a cabin interaction, a personal Home, or a multiplayer visitor space. Before trying to unlock another feature, identify which situation matches what you see.

If the building is not the type you thought it was, a correct action can appear to do nothing because you are looking for the wrong menu or expecting a move-in prompt where only a visitor-cabin furnishing prompt is available.
How to decorate a Visitor Cabin
Decorating starts after you enter the Visitor Cabin. The references do not document a single button sequence for Apple Arcade, Nintendo Switch, Steam, or PlayStation, so use the interaction prompt shown by your own platform rather than a button instruction from another device.
- Confirm the building. Make sure the location is a Visitor Cabin rather than a Home or another island structure. Cabins are the spaces described as usable by players, multiplayer friends, and Island Visitors.
- Use the cabin’s entry interaction. Approach the cabin and activate the in-game prompt that enters it. The documented workflow establishes that you must be inside before furnishing; it does not establish a universal controller or keyboard key.
- Open the furnishing interface. Once inside, open the cabin’s furnishing menu. Look for the option to add furniture.
- Choose Add Furniture. The menu presents furniture and décor that the game recognizes as available from your inventory. Items that are not in the inventory, or that the cabin cannot use, will not appear as usable choices.
- Select an available item and follow the on-screen placement controls. Placement controls vary by platform and are not specified in the available documentation, so follow the prompts displayed in your game.
That sequence is the documented furnishing path. It does not require you to claim the cabin as a personal residence first. The Make Yourself At Home quest belongs to the separate process of moving into a cabin, not to a blanket “unlock decorating” rule.

A move-in attempt has a different requirement. The documented sequence is:
- Complete the Make Yourself At Home quest. If you have not completed it, the personal-cabin option may not be available.
- Repair a Visitor Cabin. The cabin must be repaired before it can be claimed in the documented flow.
- Interact with the cabin’s outdoor sign. The sign is the interaction point for the ordinary cabin layout.
- Use the room plaque for an upgraded cabin. If the cabin has been upgraded and has a room plaque, use that plaque instead of relying on the outside sign.
- Select the move-in option. The move-in choice is the action that changes the cabin into your personal residence.
Do not treat these steps as a universal prerequisite for decorating every cabin. They explain why a player who is trying to claim a cabin cannot find the move-in action, while a player who only wants to furnish a Visitor Cabin should begin by entering it and opening the furnishing interface.

Visitor Cabin, personal cabin, Home, and multiplayer space: what changes?
Visitor Cabin
A Visitor Cabin is the documented setting for furnishing. You enter it, open the furnishing interface, and add items available in your inventory. The cabin concept is also tied to attracting Island Visitors, which is why the game’s official descriptions present renovation and decoration together.
Claimed personal cabin
A claimed cabin is still a cabin, but claiming it is a separate state. The quest, repair, and sign-or-plaque steps apply to moving in. If your goal is only to place furniture for visitors, do not wait for the personal-residence step unless the game is specifically asking you to claim the building.

The references distinguish Homes from Cabins. The cabin furnishing instructions therefore cannot be assumed to describe a Home’s menus or entry behavior. If the location is labeled or presented as a Home, note that fact when troubleshooting; do not infer that a missing cabin menu proves your account is locked.
Multiplayer friend access
A friend using a cabin through multiplayer is not the ordinary solo decorating flow. The documented invite process has host-side quest prerequisites, and the friend must be at level 4 or higher. Those conditions apply to the multiplayer use case; they do not establish a requirement for entering and furnishing your own Visitor Cabin in solo play.
Why you may be unable to enter

- You are at a Home rather than a Visitor Cabin. The documented cabin entry-and-furnish sequence may not appear at a Home.

Why you may be unable to decorate after entering
If you can enter but cannot place anything, check the furnishing interface rather than the personal-cabin quest first. The documented order is to open the interface and choose Add Furniture. The resulting list is based on items in your inventory that the cabin can use.

Confirm that you are inside a Visitor Cabin and have opened the cabin’s furnishing interface, not a general inventory or another room menu. If the building is a Home, the available cabin instructions do not establish what menu should appear there.
When the furniture list is empty
The documented menu displays usable inventory items. An empty or very short list therefore tells you to check which items are actually in your inventory and whether they are recognized as furniture or décor for that cabin. The references do not provide a universal item catalog or a rule that every owned object can be placed in every room.
When placement controls are unclear

The game definitely supports cabin renovation and decoration: that feature is stated in Nintendo’s product description and on the official game site. The documented furnishing workflow starts after entering a Visitor Cabin, while personal ownership has its own quest-and-repair requirement.
What is not established is a single cause for every player who cannot enter, a universal button prompt across platforms, or a confirmed current bug matching your symptom.
