Why XRP Market Cap Can Mislead When Much of Its Supply Is Locked or Held Off-Exchange

XRP market capitalization is a standardized valuation estimate, not a promise that the same amount of cash could be withdrawn from the market. It normally equals a reference XRP price multiplied by an estimated circulating supply. That estimate can include or exclude different classes of tokens, while the price reflects the latest marginal trade—not the price at which every holder could sell. Locked escrow, company-held XRP, self-custody wallets and off-chain transactions make the headline number especially easy to misread.

What XRP market cap actually measures

CoinMarketCap states the calculation plainly: “Market Cap = Price X Circulating Supply.” The price is a reference market price, and circulating supply is an estimate of the XRP considered to be circulating in the market and in the general public’s hands. The result is useful for comparing assets under a common convention, but it is not a liquidation quote, a bank balance or a count of dollars invested in XRP.

Suppose a tracker uses a reference price of P and an estimated circulating supply of S. Its displayed market cap is P × S. That arithmetic does not answer several different questions:

  • How many XRP can be sold immediately?
  • How much buy-side liquidity exists near the quoted price?
  • What price would result if large holders sold?
  • How much cash has ever been invested in XRP?

Those questions require information about ownership, restrictions, exchange balances, order-book depth, trading activity and transaction arrangements. Market cap itself contains none of those variables.

Why the circulating-supply denominator is an estimate

Circulating supply is not a single protocol-defined counter that every data provider must display identically. CoinMarketCap describes it as “the best approximation of the number of assets that are circulating in the market and in the general public’s hands.” Its methodology reviews project information and blockchain data, then applies classifications to balances that may be locked, strategic, insider-controlled or otherwise not treated as public float.

That means two providers can publish different circulating supplies without either having made an arithmetic error. They may classify the same address differently, use different evidence about control or restrictions, or update on different schedules. An XRP figure is therefore incomplete unless it carries the provider name and timestamp.

Circulating, total and fully diluted values are different metrics

Metric What it combines What it does not tell you
Circulating market cap Reference price multiplied by a provider’s estimated circulating supply Immediate sellable liquidity, market depth or total cash invested
Total-supply valuation Reference price multiplied by the provider’s total-supply figure Whether every token is unlocked, publicly distributed or available to trade
Fully diluted valuation A price applied to a specified maximum or future supply basis When additional supply becomes available or how buyers would absorb it
Exchange-balance estimate XRP identified in addresses controlled by exchanges, if the estimator can identify them Self-custodied XRP, company wallets, private trading arrangements or off-chain transactions

CoinMarketCap specifically distinguishes circulating supply from unlocked supply. A token can be technically unlocked yet still be omitted because it is considered strategic, treasury-held or otherwise not part of the public float. Conversely, a token held outside an exchange is not automatically excluded if it is transferable and judged to be in public hands.

Locked escrow is unavailable until its condition is met

XRPL escrow is a protocol feature that places XRP under a time or condition lock. The XRP Ledger documentation says escrowed funds cannot be used or destroyed until the specified conditions are met. While an escrow is active, the holder cannot simply transfer those funds to an exchange or sell them in the ordinary way.

Ripple’s 2017 explanation gave the scale of its original program: “To provide additional predictability to the XRP supply, Ripple has locked 55 billion XRP (55% of the total possible supply) into a series of escrows.” That statement describes the amount Ripple placed into escrows at that time; it is not a claim that the same balance remains locked today.

A release ceiling is not a sales report

Ripple’s Q1 2025 XRP Markets Report separated XRP available in wallets from XRP subject to on-ledger escrow. It said XRP in escrow was not accessible until its monthly release. A monthly release therefore represents the maximum amount that could become accessible under the escrow schedule, not the amount sold to buyers.

Released XRP can be held, returned to escrow, transferred, used for operations or sold through one or more venues. Without a transaction-by-transaction sales disclosure, treating the release limit as monthly market supply or monthly selling overstates what the evidence establishes.

Ripple also said the report would be sunset in its current form beginning in Q2 2025. Readers should not assume that the same report format or reporting cadence continued afterward.

Off-exchange XRP is not the same as locked XRP

“Off-exchange” describes where XRP is held, not whether it can move. XRP in a self-custody wallet, a corporate wallet or another address outside a centralized exchange may still be transferable and could be sent to a venue for sale. It may be inactive for practical or strategic reasons, but the address location alone does not prove a protocol lock, a legal restriction or illiquidity.

The reverse distinction matters too: XRP held by an exchange may belong to customers with different intentions and withdrawal rights. An exchange-address estimate is not a complete measure of public float because it omits self-custodied coins and may not reveal internal customer accounting.

On-chain visibility has limits

A 2025 SEC-filed registration disclosure stated that some XRP transactions occur off blockchain and therefore do not appear on the XRP Ledger. An on-chain address review can show ledger movements, but it cannot by itself prove the full amount of trading, ownership changes or liquidity when some transactions are recorded elsewhere.

This is why a wallet-counting exercise should be described narrowly: it measures identifiable ledger activity under the chosen assumptions. It does not establish the total immediately executable supply.

Dated figures that need careful attribution

Regulatory filings provide useful context, but their figures are dated disclosures rather than live market dashboards. A Federal Register publication of an SEC-filed XRP registration statement dated February 20, 2025, reported approximately 62 billion XRP in circulation and approximately 17% held by the top 10 wallets. Those are estimates stated in that filing; they should not be presented as a current exchange-balance snapshot or as an independently verified figure for October 2026.

A later SEC registration-statement amendment reported approximate balances as of May 2026: 35–38 billion XRP in escrow and 6–8 billion XRP in operational wallets. The ranges must remain attached to the May 2026 as-of date and the filing context. They should not be combined with the February 2025 circulation estimate as though all figures described one simultaneous moment.

Disclosure Figure How to read it
Ripple explanation, 2017 55 billion XRP, described as 55% of the total possible supply, placed into escrow Historical statement about the escrow program, not a current balance
SEC-filed registration material published February 20, 2025 Approximately 62 billion XRP in circulation; approximately 17% held by the top 10 wallets Dated filing estimates, not a live market measurement
SEC registration-statement amendment, balances as of May 2026 Approximately 35–38 billion XRP in escrow; 6–8 billion XRP in operational wallets Ranges tied to the stated May 2026 date and filing methodology

Why market cap is not the amount invested in XRP

Market capitalization changes when the marginal trading price changes, even if no comparable amount of new money enters or leaves the asset. If a relatively small trade establishes a higher reference price, that price can be multiplied across the entire estimated circulating supply. The resulting increase is a change in quoted valuation, not proof that an equivalent quantity of cash flowed into XRP.

The same logic works in reverse. A few transactions at lower prices can reduce the displayed market cap without every holder selling and without an amount of cash equal to the decrease being withdrawn. Market cap is therefore a mark-to-market estimate, not a ledger of cumulative investment or a guaranteed pool of proceeds.

Liquidity: the missing variable behind a “can everyone sell?” question

To estimate what holders could collectively realize, you need market depth: the quantity of bids available at successive prices across relevant venues. A large sell order consumes the highest bids first, then encounters lower bids. The average execution price can be far below the headline quote, a phenomenon known as price impact or slippage.

Market cap does not report:

  • Bid and ask depth at each price level.
  • Trading volume separated by venue and time period.
  • Concentration of ownership among addresses or entities.
  • Whether holders intend to sell, hold or transfer their XRP.
  • Private, over-the-counter or off-chain transactions that are not visible on the public ledger.

Consequently, a large market cap can coexist with a much smaller amount that could trade near the quoted price. It can also coexist with substantial liquidity if many independent participants supply bids. The headline number cannot decide between those cases.

A practical way to interpret any XRP market-cap figure

  1. Record the exact timestamp. Prices and supply estimates change. Write down the date, time zone and provider before comparing two figures.
  2. Identify the metric. Confirm whether the page shows circulating market cap, a total-supply valuation, a fully diluted value or an exchange-balance estimate.
  3. Read the supply methodology. Check whether the provider excludes escrow, strategic holdings, insider balances or other restricted categories, and whether its definition is an approximation.
  4. Separate protocol locks from custody location. Escrow conditions can make XRP unavailable; an off-exchange address alone does not.
  5. Keep dates aligned. Do not add a 2025 circulation estimate to May 2026 escrow ranges and label the result a current total.
  6. Check what the source actually measured. A filing may provide management disclosures, while a ledger analysis may cover only visible on-chain movements. Neither automatically measures immediately executable sell-side liquidity.
  7. Look for market-depth evidence. If the question is how much can be sold near a price, inspect order-book depth and execution conditions rather than relying on market cap.

Common mistakes and the correction for each

“All escrowed XRP is circulating because it will eventually be released.”

Future availability is not present availability. XRP under an active escrow cannot be used until its time or condition is satisfied, so it should be analyzed separately from currently transferable supply.

“Every monthly escrow release is sold.”

A release establishes access, not a disposition. Without a sales record, call it a release or unlocked amount rather than market selling.

“Off-exchange means illiquid.”

Self-custodied or corporate-held XRP can still be transferred. Use “off-exchange” only to describe custody location unless evidence establishes a lock or restriction.

“Top-wallet concentration tells us exactly how much can hit the market.”

Wallet concentration is an ownership or address-distribution observation. It does not reveal the owners’ intentions, legal restrictions, internal controls or selling schedule.

“The market cap equals money invested.”

It is a price-times-supply estimate. It can move through marginal trades and does not represent cumulative deposits or guaranteed liquidation proceeds.

The most accurate conclusion

XRP market cap remains useful as a standardized comparison, provided its denominator and timestamp are visible. The number becomes misleading when readers treat it as immediately sellable supply, a cash total or a promise that every token can trade at the displayed price.

For XRP, at least four layers must stay separate: the reference price; the provider’s circulating-supply methodology; XRP that is protocol-locked in escrow; and XRP that is transferable but held away from exchanges. Add the limits of on-chain visibility and the effects of market depth, and no single headline figure can answer how much XRP could be sold immediately. A careful analysis names the metric, source, date and supply treatment before drawing a liquidity conclusion.
