A new DDR4 PC that “won’t boot” can fail at four different points: it may receive no power, power on without producing a picture, stop before completing POST, or enter firmware but fail to load the operating system. Each symptom has a different first check. Identify the exact behavior before replacing parts.
Work through the sequence below, using the exact motherboard manual for slot locations, headers, indicators and reset procedures. Disconnect AC power before touching components, and stop if you are uncomfortable working inside the system.

Start by identifying where startup stops
Observe one complete attempt to start and classify it using this table. Do not assume a DDR4 problem merely because the build is new.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| What you observe | Where startup is failing | Best first checks |
|---|---|---|
| No fans, lights or other response | Power delivery or the case power-switch circuit | Outlet, PSU switch, 24-pin ATX cable, CPU 4/8-pin cable, GPU power and front-panel header |
| Fans or lights run, but the monitor stays blank | Display path, graphics hardware or an earlier hardware error | Monitor input, cable, correct video output, graphics-card seating and board debug indicators |
| It never reaches the firmware screen or repeatedly restarts | POST (power-on self-test), often involving CPU, memory, graphics or firmware compatibility | Minimal-component test, one DIMM, support-list check and BIOS version |
| Firmware opens, but the operating system does not start | Boot drive detection, boot order or the OS installation | Confirm the drive appears in firmware and select the intended boot entry |
AMD describes these as separate no-power, no-display and no-boot/OS-loading branches in its boot-failure troubleshooting guidance. That distinction prevents you from chasing RAM when the case switch is miswired, or changing a graphics card when the system is simply booting from the wrong drive.

Before opening the case
- Turn the PSU off and remove the AC cord before reseating a cable, DIMM, graphics card or other component.
- Keep the motherboard manual, the exact board model, the exact CPU model and the memory-kit label available. Support information is model-specific.
- Use a nonconductive work area and avoid touching gold contacts on memory modules or expansion cards.
- Remove unnecessary USB devices, external drives and accessories during diagnosis. They can obscure which component is preventing startup.
Do not repeatedly force a failed start while cables are loose. A single careful inspection is safer and gives more useful information than many uncontrolled attempts.
If nothing lights up or the fans never move
Check the external power path
- Test the wall outlet with another device and make sure the power cord is fully inserted into the PSU and outlet.
- Set the PSU’s rear switch to the on position. If the PSU has a voltage selector, use the setting required for your region and follow its label; do not guess.
- Confirm that the motherboard’s 24-pin ATX connector is completely latched.
- Confirm that the CPU power connector near the processor socket is connected. Depending on the board, this is a 4-pin, 8-pin or split 4+4 connector.
- If a discrete graphics card is installed, connect every auxiliary power lead specified for that card.
AMD and ASUS both list loose internal power connections as common reasons a fresh build remains dead; ASUS’s current checklist is in its no-power, no-boot and no-display troubleshooting article. A CPU power lead is not interchangeable with a graphics-card PCIe lead. Intel specifically warns that CPU and PCIe power connectors are different; forcing the wrong plug can damage hardware.
Verify the case power-switch header
The case’s tiny power-switch wires must be on the two motherboard pins labeled for the power switch. Use the front-panel diagram in the exact board manual rather than a similarly named model. Polarity normally does not matter for a simple switch, but using the wrong pins does. To test the possibility of a bad or miswired switch, follow the motherboard manual’s approved method for momentarily bridging the power-switch pins with a screwdriver. Do this only with the correct pins identified.

If the outlet, PSU switch, connectors and switch wiring are correct yet the machine remains entirely lifeless, a PSU or motherboard fault is plausible. The available guidance does not identify which part has failed. Test with known-good compatible hardware or use the vendor’s support and warranty process instead of buying replacement components at random.

If it powers on but the monitor is blank
Confirm the monitor and cable
- Turn the monitor on and select the input to which the computer is connected.
- Reseat both ends of the video cable. If available, try a known-good cable or another input on the monitor.
- Identify whether the cable is connected to the motherboard’s video output or to a discrete graphics card.
A motherboard HDMI or DisplayPort socket produces an image only when the installed CPU provides integrated graphics. If the processor lacks an iGPU, that socket cannot display firmware or an operating system. Intel’s support example notes that processor models with an “F” suffix require external graphics, so connect the monitor to the discrete card instead. Check the exact CPU specification rather than inferring graphics capability from the socket or chipset.
Check the discrete graphics card
- Switch the system off and disconnect AC power before checking that the card is fully seated in its PCIe slot.
- Connect the card’s required PSU cables; a card can light its fans or LEDs while still failing to initialize without auxiliary power.
- Use the card’s outputs for the monitor when a discrete GPU is installed and the processor’s integrated graphics are unavailable or disabled.
If the board has CPU, DRAM, VGA or BOOT indicators, note which one remains lit during startup. MSI explains that an EZ Debug indicator that stays on can identify the hardware category where initialization stopped. LED labels and meanings are board-specific, so interpret them only with the manual for your exact model, not with a guide for a similar board.
When the system fails POST or keeps restarting
Perform a minimal-component POST test
A minimal test removes storage, USB devices and expansion cards that are not required to reach firmware. MSI’s generic procedure calls for the CPU with its cooler, one memory module, the PSU and a monitor. Follow your board manual and disconnect AC power before removing anything.

- Power down, switch off the PSU and remove the AC cord.
- Disconnect USB devices, storage drives and nonessential PCIe cards. Leave only the CPU and cooler, one DIMM, the PSU, the motherboard and the display path required by your platform.
- Reconnect AC power and attempt to start. Observe the board’s debug light or POST-code display, if present.
- If the minimal configuration reaches firmware, shut down and reconnect one removed device at a time. The first device after which the symptom returns is the leading suspect.
This test does not prove that a removed part is defective; it shows which change alters the symptom. A drive, USB device or expansion card may be incompatible, incorrectly connected or simply hiding a separate issue.

Allow for first-start memory training
Some platforms take longer on the first start while the firmware trains memory. ASRock’s general FAQ says certain systems may require three to five minutes during this process. That is an example, not a guaranteed duration for every DDR4 motherboard. Leave the system undisturbed for the period specified by the board maker, but do not treat an indefinitely blank screen as normal. If the exact manual gives a different instruction, follow it.
Diagnose DDR4 memory without guessing
Use the board’s recommended single-DIMM slot
With AC power disconnected, remove and reinstall the module until both retention latches close as the manual shows. Start with one DIMM in the slot the exact motherboard manual recommends for a single module. Slot numbering is not universal: a slot labeled A2 on one board may occupy a different physical position than on another.
Test modules and slots separately
- Test module 1 by itself in the recommended slot.
- If there is no POST, test module 2 by itself in that same slot.
- If one module works, test the other in the same slot to distinguish a module issue from a slot issue.
- If neither works, try the other slots individually as directed by the manual.
AMD and ASUS recommend this separate-stick and separate-slot approach for memory-related startup symptoms. A result that follows one DIMM across slots points toward that module; a result that follows one slot while other modules work points toward the board or slot. These tests are indications, not automatic proof of a failed part.
Check compatibility, not just the DDR4 label
“DDR4” identifies the memory generation. It does not guarantee that a particular kit, capacity, number of modules, speed or profile is supported by every CPU and motherboard combination. Check the motherboard’s memory support list and recommended DIMM population for the exact kit and processor. Intel’s support guidance states: “The DRAM should also be compatible. Refer to your motherboard manufacturer’s site and the product specification page and the CPU to check memory compatibility.”

Do not order replacement RAM solely because the system failed once. First complete single-module testing and compare the kit with the board’s support information. A replacement is justified when testing points to a faulty module or when the documented compatibility information identifies a mismatch.
Confirm CPU support and the installed BIOS version
The socket and chipset family are not enough to establish support. A motherboard may need a particular BIOS revision before it can initialize a newer processor in the same socket.
- Read the exact motherboard model and revision from the board, box or purchase record.
- Open the motherboard maker’s CPU support page and locate the exact processor model.
- Note the minimum BIOS version listed for that CPU.
- Compare it with the BIOS version installed on the board, if the board label, firmware screen or seller information makes that known.
- If an update is required, download only the file and instructions for that exact model and revision.
Some boards provide USB BIOS Flashback or a similar update feature that can operate without a supported CPU; others do not. Use that feature only when the board explicitly supports it and follow its file-naming, USB-port, power and indicator procedure. A failed or interrupted update can create a second problem, so do not substitute a file for a different board.
Reset firmware settings when settings may be wrong
Changed memory settings, an unsuccessful overclock or corrupted firmware settings can prevent startup even when the hardware is otherwise compatible. AMD recommends a power flush or CMOS reset for certain no-boot conditions.

- Follow the specified waiting time and sequence. MSI specifically says to disconnect PSU power before using its CMOS jumper or removing the battery.
- Restore power and start with default settings. Reapply memory profiles or other tuning only after the system reliably reaches firmware.
Jumper location, battery access and reset timing vary by board. Never short pins or remove a battery based on a diagram for another model.
When POST succeeds but the operating system will not load
Reaching the firmware screen means the machine has progressed beyond the earliest hardware checks. AMD separates this condition from failure to POST. Enter firmware setup and verify that the intended storage drive is detected. Then check that the boot order points to the drive or boot entry containing the operating system.
- If the drive is absent, power down and check its data and power connections or its slot installation according to the drive and motherboard manuals.
- If the drive is present but not first in the boot order, select the intended OS boot entry and save the change.
- If firmware detects the drive but the OS still fails, continue with operating-system or installation recovery rather than repeating DIMM swaps.
A system that reaches firmware but cannot load an OS is not described by the same remedy as a machine with no display. Keep the diagnosis at the stage where the failure actually occurs.
Use debug lights and codes as evidence
Debug LEDs and POST-code displays narrow the search, but they are not universal diagnoses. Record the indicator that remains on after giving the platform an appropriate training period, then consult the exact board manual. A DRAM light can justify memory and slot checks; a VGA light can justify graphics and display checks; a CPU light can justify power, seating and BIOS-support checks. The label tells you where initialization stopped, not necessarily which physical part is defective.
If the indicator changes after a single controlled change, record that result. For example, a board that moves from DRAM to VGA after a DIMM swap has provided useful evidence that the memory path changed; it has not proved the graphics card is now faulty.
A practical decision path
| Result after the check | Next action | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| No response after verified power and switch wiring | Test with known-good compatible PSU components or contact support | That the motherboard is definitely the failed part |
| Fans run and the board reports VGA or the monitor remains blank | Check monitor input, cable, correct output, GPU seating and GPU power | That the DDR4 kit is the cause |
| One DIMM works while another does not in the same slot | Compare the suspect module with its support-list and warranty information | That every slot on the board is bad |
| No DIMM works in the recommended slot | Test other slots, verify CPU/board support and reset CMOS | That a replacement kit will solve it without compatibility evidence |
| Minimal hardware reaches firmware | Reconnect storage, USB devices and cards one at a time | That all removed components are defective |
| Firmware sees the drive but the OS fails | Check boot entry and proceed to OS recovery | That the system has a POST failure |
Common mistakes that prolong a new-build diagnosis
- Plugging the monitor into the motherboard output when the CPU has no integrated graphics.
- Using a CPU EPS power lead in a PCIe graphics socket, or the reverse. The connectors serve different purposes.
- Installing one DIMM in a slot that the manual does not recommend for single-module operation.
- Changing several parts at once, which removes the evidence needed to identify the trigger.
- Declaring a board dead before checking whether the CPU needs a newer BIOS.
- Interrupting a legitimate first-boot memory-training cycle immediately, while also waiting indefinitely on a system that has no documented progress.
- Interpreting another motherboard model’s debug-light meanings as if they were universal.
When to stop troubleshooting and seek service
Contact the motherboard, CPU, memory or PSU maker when the exact compatibility information and controlled tests point to a component, or when a board-specific update or reset procedure fails. Provide the model and revision, CPU, memory-kit part number, BIOS version if known, observed lights or codes, and the exact minimal configuration that was tested. This record is more useful to support than saying only that the PC “doesn’t boot.”
Do not continue experimenting with damaged connectors, a burning smell, visible scorching, liquid contamination or a PSU that makes abnormal sounds. Disconnect power and use the manufacturer’s support or warranty process.
