Why won’t my phone connect to my Chromebook? Phone Hub troubleshooting and FAQs

The usual fix is to set up the phone through Chromebook’s Phone Hub or Connected devices menu—not through the ordinary Bluetooth pairing screen. Turn on Bluetooth on both devices, confirm they meet the relevant ChromeOS and Android requirements, sign in to the same Google Account, install pending Android and Google Play Services updates, and remove any old pairing before trying again. If Phone Hub connects but app streaming or tethering fails, those features have separate requirements.

First, identify what “won’t connect” means

Several different failures are described as a phone not connecting to a Chromebook. The correct fix depends on where the process stops.

What you see What it usually means Where to troubleshoot
Your phone is missing from the Chromebook’s Add Bluetooth device list This is expected. Google does not use ordinary Bluetooth accessory pairing for a phone-to-Chromebook connection. Use Phone Hub or Settings > Connected devices.
Set up Android phone is missing or setup will not start The Chromebook, phone, account, software version, or administrator policy may not meet the requirements. Check compatibility, account, updates, Bluetooth, and management restrictions.
The phone appears, but verification remains pending The devices may not be able to complete internet-based verification. Check internet access on both devices and retry the setup.
Phone Hub works, but app streaming or tethering does not Those are separate features with narrower device, network, permission, and version requirements. Use the feature-specific checks later in this guide.

Check compatibility before changing settings

Google documents more than one Android-phone connection path, so there is not one universal minimum version for every feature.

Feature or path Documented minimums and conditions What it enables
Phone Hub setup Chromebook running ChromeOS M89 or later; Android phone running Android 5.1 or later. Phone notifications, recent photos, messaging, open Chrome tabs, phone status, and—where supported—app streaming.
Broader Android-phone connection instructions ChromeOS 71 or later and Android 6 or later. Messaging, photos, mobile-network connection, and unlocking.
App streaming Supported models only. Google lists Pixel 4a or later on Android 13 or later, Nothing Phone (1) and (2), and selected Xiaomi models on Android 13 or later. The phone and Chromebook must be nearby and on the same Wi-Fi network. Running supported phone apps in a Chromebook window.
Instant Tethering ChromeOS 71 or later, Android 8.1 or later, the same Google Account, and a Chromebook that supports Instant Hotspot. Carrier rules may limit or charge for hotspot use. Using the phone’s mobile data connection on the Chromebook.

Use the Phone Hub minimums for Phone Hub itself and the separate requirements for each additional feature. A phone can satisfy the basic connection requirements without supporting app streaming or Instant Tethering.

Set up the phone through Phone Hub

Do not begin in the Chromebook’s generic Bluetooth-device picker. Google’s Bluetooth guidance explicitly says a phone cannot be paired to a Chromebook with Bluetooth; the Android-phone connection flow is required.

  1. On the Android phone, turn on Bluetooth. On the Chromebook, select the status area near the clock and turn on Bluetooth.
  2. Select the Phone Hub icon near the Chromebook clock. If it is not visible, open Settings > Connected devices.
  3. Choose Get Started or Set up beside Android phone.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts, including selecting the phone and confirming the Google Account connection.
  5. When setup finishes, select Done. Open Phone Hub to check the available features.

Labels can vary slightly by ChromeOS release, but the route remains the Android-phone setup flow under Connected devices. Selecting Add Bluetooth device is for accessories such as keyboards and headphones, not for Phone Hub.

Work through the fixes in this order

1. Confirm Bluetooth is enabled on both devices

Phone Hub uses Bluetooth during setup and for proximity-related functions. Turn Bluetooth off and back on from the phone’s quick settings or Bluetooth settings, then verify that it is enabled on the Chromebook. Keep the devices close together while setup is running.

(3) Faster data sync (480Mbps) with minimal signal interference

2. Use the same Google Account

The Chromebook and Android phone need to be signed in to the same Google Account for Google’s phone connection features. On the Chromebook, check the account shown in the status area or under Settings > Accounts. On the phone, check the account under Settings > Passwords & accounts or the equivalent account screen supplied by the phone maker. If several accounts are present, make sure the account used by ChromeOS is also added to the phone.

3. Install pending updates

Update Android and Google Play Services on the phone, and install any available ChromeOS update on the Chromebook. A missing setup option or an apparently incompatible phone can be caused by outdated system components rather than by the hardware itself. Restart the phone after Android or Play Services updates finish, then retry the Phone Hub setup flow.

4. Remove an old pairing and reset the connection state

Stale pairing information is a common reason a phone that worked previously will not reconnect.

5. Check internet access when verification is delayed

Google notes that internet problems can delay phone verification. Confirm that both devices can open a webpage, temporarily move away from a captive portal or unstable network, and retry. Bluetooth being enabled does not guarantee that account verification can complete.

6. Check whether the Chromebook is managed

A Chromebook issued by a school or workplace may have phone features disabled by an administrator. If the setup option is unavailable, a policy message appears, or the feature works on a personal Chromebook but not on the managed one, contact the organization’s administrator. Local troubleshooting cannot override an administrator policy.

If Chromebook Bluetooth itself is unreliable

When Bluetooth accessories also disconnect, fail to appear, or refuse to pair, treat the problem as a ChromeOS Bluetooth issue rather than a Phone Hub-only issue.

  1. Install the latest available ChromeOS update.
  2. Turn Chromebook Bluetooth off, wait briefly, and turn it back on.
  3. Restart the Chromebook and test the Android-phone setup again.
  4. If Bluetooth continues to fail across multiple devices, use Google’s ChromeOS hard-reset procedure for your Chromebook model. A hard reset is a last troubleshooting step; follow the model-specific instructions and save work first.

If headphones or another known-good Bluetooth accessory work normally while Phone Hub does not, return to the account, Phone Hub flow, stale-pairing, and managed-device checks above.

When Phone Hub connects but app streaming fails

App streaming is not simply another name for Phone Hub. It has stricter compatibility and network conditions.

Anker USB A to USB C Cable, USB to USB C Cable (2-Pack, 6 ft, Black) | For iPhone 17 Series, Samsung Galaxy S10 / S10+, LG V30, Beats Fit Pro, and More
  • The Anker Advantage: Join the 50 million+ powered by our leading technology.
  • Enhanced Durability: Improved construction techniques and materials make a cable that lasts 5× longer.
  • Universal Compatibility: Designed to work flawlessly with any device that uses a USB-C port.
  • Fast Sync & Charge: Supports fast charging up to 15W (3A/5V) and data transfer speeds up to 480Mbps. (Not compatible with Power Delivery).
  • What You Get: 2 × Premium Nylon-Braided USB-A to USB-C Charger Cable (6ft), welcome guide, everlasting warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • The phone must be a supported model. Google lists Pixel 4a or later running Android 13 or later, Nothing Phone (1) and (2), and selected Xiaomi models running Android 13 or later.
  • The phone and Chromebook must be near each other and connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Some public or private Wi-Fi networks do not support the required communication.
  • On the phone, allow the permissions requested for notifications, photos and media, and apps.
  • Some stream starts require the phone’s lock-screen condition described by Google. Unlock the phone when prompted and retry.

Therefore, successful Phone Hub setup does not prove that a particular phone can stream apps. Check the model, Android release, Wi-Fi arrangement, permissions, and lock-screen prompt separately.

When what you really need is mobile tethering

Instant Tethering shares the phone’s mobile data with the Chromebook; it is separate from basic Phone Hub pairing. It requires ChromeOS 71 or later, Android 8.1 or later, the same Google Account, and a Chromebook that supports Instant Hotspot. Your carrier may restrict hotspot use or apply an additional charge.

If Phone Hub works but tethering does not, check Instant Hotspot support and carrier terms instead of repeatedly deleting the Phone Hub pairing. Conversely, a tethering failure alone does not show that the Phone Hub connection is broken.

A short decision checklist

  • Phone absent from Bluetooth accessories: use Phone Hub or Connected devices; this absence is normal.
  • Setup option missing: check the documented ChromeOS and Android versions, updates, same-account sign-in, and administrator restrictions.
  • Verification pending: test internet access on both devices.
  • Previously connected phone: forget the old entries on both devices, toggle phone Bluetooth, restart the Chromebook, and set up again.
  • Duplicate phone listings: try the first listing, then forget it and try another if connection does not complete after a few minutes.
  • Phone Hub connected but streaming fails: check supported model, Android 13 requirement where applicable, same Wi-Fi, proximity, permissions, and lock-screen prompts.
  • Phone Hub connected but tethering fails: check Instant Hotspot support, Android 8.1 or later, ChromeOS 71 or later, account matching, and carrier limits.
  • All Bluetooth devices fail: update ChromeOS, toggle Bluetooth, restart, and consider a model-specific hard reset.

What information to collect before asking for help

If these steps do not resolve the problem, record the Chromebook model and ChromeOS version, the phone model and Android version, the Google Account arrangement, whether Phone Hub appears under Connected devices, and the exact message shown during verification. Also note whether other Bluetooth accessories connect and whether the Chromebook is managed by a school or employer. Those details distinguish compatibility, account, policy, internet, and Bluetooth failures without guessing.
