Work through the checks below before removing or resetting a device.
Start by identifying what is failing
“Nest” covers several kinds of devices, and their setup instructions are not interchangeable. Note the product type and model, whether this is first-time setup or a reconnect, and what happens in the app.

- Every device is offline: investigate the internet connection or router first.
- Only Nest is offline: check its supported network, signal, and device-specific setup steps.
- The Wi-Fi network is missing from the list: check discovery, hidden-network settings, and band compatibility.
- The network appears but the password is rejected: verify the password and, for cameras, consult the setup error code.
- Nest joins Wi-Fi but will not finish setup in the app: check the phone, app, Bluetooth, and permissions.
- The problem began after a router or password change: restore the previous network details if possible, or use the product’s network-change procedure.
Google’s Nest connection troubleshooting guide explains that products can retry connecting periodically, but an offline device may still need in-person troubleshooting.
Check whether the internet and Wi-Fi are working
On a phone or computer connected to the same home Wi-Fi, open a webpage. On a phone, turn off cellular data—or use airplane mode and then turn Wi-Fi back on—so a working mobile connection cannot disguise a failed Wi-Fi test.

- Each nest Wi Fi router provides up to 2200 square feet of fast, reliable Wi Fi coverage for your home. [1]
If other devices also cannot get online, restore the internet connection or contact your internet service provider before troubleshooting Nest. If they work, continue with the Nest-specific checks.
Prepare the phone and app used for setup
Connect the setup phone or tablet to the Wi-Fi network the Nest device should use. Turn on Bluetooth, use the appropriate current Google Home or Nest app, and allow the permissions the app requests. On iOS 14 or later, make sure the app has local-network access. Google lists these checks in its pairing troubleshooting guidance.

- The product is refurbished, is fully functional and in excellent condition. Backed by the 90-day Amazon Renewed Guarantee.
- Confirm the phone is on the intended home Wi-Fi, not cellular data or a different network.
- Enable Bluetooth and check the app’s required permissions, including local-network access on iOS 14 or later.
- Quit and reopen the app. If setup still fails, restart the phone, Nest device, router, and modem, then retry.
- For a camera, scan its QR code during setup before mounting it. Keep the QR sticker in a safe place in case it is needed for later setup or troubleshooting, as described in Google’s camera setup instructions.
Make sure the network suits the specific Nest model
Do not force every Nest product onto 2.4 GHz. Supported bands vary by product: Google says the 2nd generation Nest Thermostat and Nest Protect use 2.4 GHz only, while some speakers and displays can use either band. For a dual-band router, Google suggests trying both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz for speakers and displays. Camera radio support also depends on the model; check Google’s camera and doorbell specifications and Nest and Home device specifications.

- Nest Wifi Pro is up to 2x faster than Wi-Fi 6, so you get super fast speeds and a reliable connection for your entire home[1]
- Three Wi-Fi routers provide up to 6600 square feet of fast, reliable Wi-Fi[2]; and you can customize your setup to create a mesh Wi-Fi system for the coverage you need
- Nest Wifi Pro uses the latest, most advanced Wi-Fi 6E technology[3], so it isn’t compatible with previous generations of Google Wifi or Nest Wifi
- Nest Wifi Pro automatically adjusts your Wi-Fi network’s performance and activity; it prioritizes video calls and helps websites load quickly
- It has built-in technology to make sure your connection is strong and consistent, even at the edge of your Wi-Fi network’s coverage[2]
Networks that are incompatible or discouraged
- Captive portals: networks that require a browser sign-in page, often found in hotels or airports, do not work with Nest products.
- Enterprise 802.1x/RADIUS: this authentication setup is incompatible.
- Public or open Wi-Fi: Google discourages using these networks.
- Someone else’s guest network: Google also discourages relying on another person’s guest Wi-Fi.
- Hotspots: compatibility and reliability depend on the product and situation; do not assume a phone hotspot is supported.
See Google’s list of incompatible or not-recommended Wi-Fi networks.
If the Wi-Fi name is missing or the password will not work
For a camera or doorbell, allow the app time to discover nearby networks and scroll to the bottom of the list. A hidden network may need to be entered manually using its exact SSID (network name) and the correct security type. Recheck the password for typos, including capitalization, and confirm that the router is not blocking the device through firewall rules or IP/MAC filtering.

- Nest Wifi is a scalable and flexible Wi-Fi system. These Nest Wifi devices work together to blanket your whole home in fast, reliable Wi-Fi and eliminate buffering in every room – with coverage up to 4400 square feet.[1]
- 1 Wi-Fi router plugs into your internet provider’s modem to create your Wi-Fi network. The other extends the wireless network and keeps your connection fast to devices in every room. For more coverage, add Nest Wifi routers or points to your system.
- Nest Wifi routers are strong enough to handle up to 200 connected devices, and fast enough to stream multiple 4K videos at a time.[2] Compatible with Google Wifi; Ethernet ports included on each router. 15W power adapter.
- Intelligently works behind the scenes to make sure your Wi-Fi remains fast.[3] Walk from room to room on a video call with an uninterrupted signal. Nest Wifi automatically updates itself to get new features and help your network stay safe and sound.
If the setup screen points to firewall or network settings, first confirm internet access and the router configuration. Change firewall or filtering settings only if you understand the router controls; if you temporarily relax a security setting to test setup, restore it afterward. Google’s camera Wi-Fi discovery steps also recommend moving the camera or router closer before trying again. The company notes, “A couple of feet can make a big difference.”
Camera and doorbell setup error codes
These groupings apply to camera and doorbell setup, not to every Nest product. Match the code shown in the app against Google’s current camera and doorbell setup-message guide.

Reconnect after changing a router or Wi-Fi password
If you replaced the router, restoring the old network name (SSID) and password on the new router is often the simplest route: many Nest products can reconnect using the saved details. If that is not practical, follow the network-change instructions for the specific device.
For cameras and doorbells, Google says Wi-Fi details cannot be updated in the Google Home app. The usual process is to remove or reset the device and set it up again. Save any important video clips before taking this step. Follow Google’s camera and doorbell Wi-Fi change instructions; do not assume the same reset steps apply to a thermostat, speaker, or display.
Improve a weak signal at the device
If Nest connects near the router but fails at its installed location, distance or obstructions may be the issue. Move the device or router closer and retry before changing router security settings or buying equipment. For a camera, Google recommends trying a closer placement; if the intended location is still too far away, a Wi-Fi range extender may help extend coverage.

It will not fix an internet outage, incorrect password, unsupported Wi-Fi band, or incompatible captive-portal or enterprise network. Escalate without resetting too soon
Use this order to avoid a reset that does not address the cause:
Quick Recap
- Verify the home internet works on another device without cellular fallback.
- Check the setup phone’s Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, app permissions, and app state.
- Confirm the Nest model supports the network and band, and rule out an incompatible network type.
- Restart the app, phone, Nest device, router, and modem; retry with the device nearer the router.
- For a camera or doorbell, use the exact on-screen error code and its Google help page. For another product, follow that model’s setup or connection guide.
- Only then use the product-specific remove/reset and setup-again procedure. Save important camera clips first.
