wkhtmltopdf failures usually come from a mismatch between the binary you installed, the operating system and libraries it runs on, the resources your page needs, or the old WebKit engine it uses—not from one universal bug. Start by recording the exact command, version, OS, exit code and error output; then test a minimal local HTML file and add fonts, images, stylesheets and JavaScript one at a time. If the failure is caused by missing runtime libraries or resources, fix that environment. If the page relies on modern browser behavior, a maintained renderer may be the practical answer.
Why wkhtmltopdf is not working: diagnose the exact build first
The same HTML can render differently—or fail outright—depending on which package is running and where it runs. Before changing CSS or adding arbitrary delays, collect the details that distinguish a packaging problem from a page problem.
- Run
wkhtmltopdf --versionand save the complete output, including whether it sayswith patched qt. - Record the exact command, exit code, and all standard error output. Do not discard stderr; it can identify failed resource loads.
- Record the operating system and release, CPU architecture, container or base-image identity, and how wkhtmltopdf was installed.
- Run a minimal local HTML file through the same binary and runtime. Then add external CSS, images, fonts and JavaScript one at a time until the failure returns.
- Test every referenced URL and file from the same container, user account and network context that launches wkhtmltopdf. A URL that loads in your desktop browser may not be reachable from a server process.
This is also the information the project’s support guidance asks for when someone reports a problem: the version, OS and version, and a reproducible example. A minimal reproduction is much more useful than a large page that fails in several possible ways.
Why do wkhtmltopdf builds behave differently?
Do not assume every package bearing the wkhtmltopdf name has the same features or runtime requirements. The project explains that some PDF-related functions rely on patches to Qt, and that distribution packages may not include those patches. The version string is therefore part of the diagnosis, not a formality.

Check patched Qt for missing output features
If headers, footers, outlines or a table of contents are missing, first check whether the actual executable reports with patched qt, then confirm that the feature is supported by that particular build. The project’s release notes include fixes involving special pages and TOC behavior, so the presence of an option in an example does not prove that every packaged build implements it identically.
Distribution builds can differ from patched builds, and older patched builds may behave differently from builds using newer distribution web engines. Identify the precise package and feature before blaming your document markup.
Match the binary to the operating system
The project’s downloads FAQ describes platform-specific builds because operating systems ship different library versions. It also notes that Alpine uses musl rather than glibc. A binary intended for one distribution or architecture is not automatically suitable for another.
“Static” does not mean independent of the host. In this context, a static Qt build can still depend on system packages; the FAQ specifically calls out distribution libraries as well as fontconfig and freetype. If the executable fails to start with a shared-library error, check its intended target distribution and install or use a compatible package rather than treating the word “static” as a guarantee of zero dependencies.

Why does wkhtmltopdf show a network error?
A PDF conversion process has to fetch every remote stylesheet, image, font and other resource that the document references. It may be running in a container without the host’s network access, under a different account, behind a proxy, or with a filesystem layout unlike your development machine. A missing asset can look like a layout defect even when the HTML itself is valid.
- Use the error output and the options documented for your installed version to determine whether a resource load failed.
- From the conversion environment, check that each URL resolves and is reachable, and that local file paths exist and are readable by the process.
- Check whether redirects, authentication, certificates, firewalls or proxy configuration prevent the process from retrieving the resource.
- Try a minimal document with one resource at a time. If a local-only version works but a remote version does not, investigate access and loading rather than pagination or CSS.
The command-usage documentation describes load-error handling options, but their exact behavior should be checked against the version actually installed. Treat errors as evidence to investigate: suppressing or ignoring a failed load can produce a PDF that looks complete while silently omitting images or styles.
Why are fonts missing or text wrapping differently?
Font availability is part of the rendering environment. If a font is absent, unreadable or not discoverable through the installed font setup, the renderer may substitute another font. That substitution changes glyph appearance and can also change line breaks, table widths and page count.
- Check that the requested font files are present and readable inside the container or host where conversion runs.
- Check the fontconfig and freetype runtime dependencies noted by the project’s downloads FAQ, and verify that the system can discover the installed fonts.
- Compare a document using a known installed font with one using the intended font. If the known font works, focus on font installation, CSS font-family references and resource access.
- Re-run after changing the font setup; a font-related change can alter layout throughout the PDF, not only the text that first looked wrong.
A build that launches successfully can still render differently on another host because font packages and system libraries are not necessarily identical. Keep the OS image, binary, dependencies and fonts consistent when repeatable output matters.

Why is JavaScript missing from the PDF?
wkhtmltopdf uses an old Qt/WebKit rendering base, not the browser engine in a current desktop browser. Its project status page reports that Qt 4 has not been supported since 2015 and that its WebKit had not been updated since 2012. Those dates describe the project’s published status, not every downstream fork, but they explain why modern browser APIs and complex JavaScript-driven pages can behave differently.
Wait only when the page is genuinely asynchronous
If scripts populate the page after initial navigation, a capture can begin before that work finishes. The tool documents delay and window-status controls for waiting on dynamic content. Use the option supported by your installed version and choose a condition that corresponds to the page’s actual completion behavior; an arbitrary delay can make a conversion slower without fixing a script error.
Test the same page with JavaScript removed or with its final content written directly into static HTML. If static content renders but the dynamic page remains blank or incomplete, inspect script errors, resource access and timing. If the page depends on modern APIs or extensive client-side rendering, waiting longer will not make an obsolete engine equivalent to a current browser.
Fix blank, incomplete or incorrectly laid-out PDFs
Separate a load failure from a rendering limitation before trying CSS workarounds. A blank page can result from unreachable content, delayed JavaScript, a missing runtime dependency or behavior the old engine does not support.

- If the minimal reproduction depends on current browser APIs or modern CSS that the engine does not handle, compare a maintained renderer rather than endlessly adjusting markup around the limitation.
The project names WeasyPrint or commercial Prince as alternatives to consider for controlled report generation, and Puppeteer or a wrapper for pages that need dynamic JavaScript. These are choices to evaluate against your required HTML and CSS behavior, JavaScript needs, runtime packaging, security maintenance and licensing or cost. The project does not provide a current cross-tool benchmark, so none should be treated as universally faster or more accurate based on that guidance alone.

Security: do not convert untrusted HTML without isolation
The project status page warns: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server it is running on!” It recommends considering operating-system Mandatory Access Control such as AppArmor or SELinux. Sanitizing user-controlled HTML and JavaScript and containing the conversion process are important safeguards; a renderer should not be given broad access to a server simply because it produces PDFs.

When it is time to migrate
The main wkhtmltopdf GitHub repository is archived and read-only as of January 2, 2023. The project status page describes a stale Qt/WebKit foundation. This does not establish the status of every downstream fork, so check the maintenance and security posture of the exact build you use. But if your workload depends on modern web behavior or a supported rendering stack, migration may be more practical than accumulating workarounds.
- For controlled reports, assess WeasyPrint or commercial Prince against your HTML/CSS requirements and licensing needs.
- For JavaScript-heavy pages, assess Puppeteer or a wrapper and the browser runtime it requires.
- Before changing tools, test representative documents: CSS layout, page breaks, fonts, headers and footers, JavaScript behavior, packaging and isolation.
There is no universal winner established by the project material. Choose using a reproducible test set and operational requirements, not an assumption that a named alternative is automatically faster or more accurate.
