WizTree can inventory an NTFS drive quickly because, when run as administrator, it reads the volume’s Master File Table (MFT) directly instead of asking Windows to walk through files and folders one by one. That shortcut explains the speed, but it does not guarantee that every 1TB drive will scan in less than a second: results depend on the drive, scan mode, and filesystem.
How WizTree scans an NTFS drive
NTFS maintains a Master File Table, or MFT, containing records about files and folders. WizTree’s official explanation says that on NTFS volumes it reads this table directly. Rather than opening and querying each item through the usual Windows filesystem path, the program can inventory the volume from its metadata and then build its folder tree and treemap.
In practical terms, this is closer to looking up an index than inspecting every item individually. The scan concerns filesystem records and allocated space; it is not a byte-by-byte inspection of every file’s contents. WizTree describes the direct method as bypassing Windows and providing a substantial performance boost (WizTree’s About page).
Why “a 1TB drive in less than a second” is not a guarantee
Drive capacity alone does not determine scan time. The direct MFT method avoids much of the work involved in ordinary filesystem traversal, but the official documentation does not promise a sub-second result for every 1TB volume. Hardware, the amount and layout of filesystem metadata, and whether the scan can use the direct MFT path all matter.

WizTree’s version 4.21 release notes, dated 24 October 2024, report that MFT scanning was up to 15% faster in certain cases. They also report scans more than four times faster on some SSDs in non-administrator mode. These are qualified results from those release notes, not a universal benchmark or a specific promise for all 1TB drives (version 4.21 release notes).
When WizTree can use its fastest scan method
Whole NTFS volumes
For an NTFS volume, the direct-MFT approach is the reason WizTree can be much faster than a tool that discovers files by walking the directory structure. Running WizTree as administrator is required for its fast MFT scanning path, according to the official FAQ.

Folders and other filesystems
A scan of an individual folder normally uses the Windows API. WizTree’s release notes say MFT scanning can be forced for very large folders, but that is a different case from scanning a whole NTFS volume. WizTree also supports FAT, FAT32, network drives, USB drives, and individual directories; those sources do not all provide the same direct-NTFS-MFT advantage (About; release notes).
- NTFS volume: direct MFT scanning can provide the major speed advantage.
- Individual folder: normally scanned through the Windows API; MFT scanning may be forced for a very large folder.
- FAT or FAT32: supported, but there is no NTFS MFT to read.
- Network or USB drive: supported, but the direct-MFT benefit depends on the filesystem and access method; it should not be assumed for every device or share.
Why results can differ from Windows’ used-space figure
A disk analyzer’s total and Windows’ reported used space need not be identical. WizTree’s release notes explain that reserved NTFS space and other filesystem data, including directory indexes, can contribute to a difference between WizTree’s allocated total and Windows’ used-space number (release notes).

Hard links are another potential source of confusion when interpreting a tree: one file can have multiple directory entries. WizTree says it handles hard-linked files without counting the same data more than once, and that its allocated total matches Windows’ report (WizTree). A displayed difference should therefore be read in context rather than treated automatically as evidence of a missing scan or duplicated file.
How WizTree compares with WinDirStat or Explorer
The central distinction is scan method, not simply the size of the drive. When WizTree can read an NTFS MFT directly, it can inventory metadata without the conventional file-by-file traversal. A tool using normal filesystem APIs, including Windows Explorer’s ordinary folder browsing, has to discover items through that route. On a non-NTFS volume, a network location, or an individual folder, the comparison changes because WizTree may also need to use Windows API or filesystem methods.

When comparing disk analyzers, check the scan method available for your specific volume, whether administrator privileges are needed, support for the filesystem and network location, treatment of hard links and reserved space, and the tree, treemap, and export features you need. A speed claim for one NTFS setup does not establish how another tool will perform on a different drive or scan target.

WizTree’s tree and treemap can help identify large files and folders, but size alone does not show whether an item is safe to remove. The software itself cautions users to take care before deleting files needed for correct PC operation (About). Verify what a file belongs to and use the application or Windows settings that manage it before deleting system or application data.
