Why Winged Termites Swarm and What Happens After They Land

Winged termites, called alates or swarmers, are the colony’s reproductive adults. They leave a mature colony in a coordinated flight to find mates, spread into new territory and, if a male–female pair survives, start another colony. The flight is a reproduction and dispersal event—not the stage that eats your house.

After landing, a successful pair drops its wings, finds a protected, suitably moist place, seals a tiny nest chamber and begins the difficult process of raising the first workers. Most swarmers die or fail to establish a lasting colony. Species, location, season, daylight and weather determine when and how the flight appears.

Why do winged termites swarm?

Swarming is the termite colony’s reproductive launch

A mature termite colony produces winged males and females when conditions are suitable. These alates leave the parent colony, fly a limited distance, pair with a mate and search for a site where they can reproduce. The University of California Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program says new kings and queens generally fly less than 100 meters from their original colony, so a swarm does not necessarily come from the structure where you see it: it may have emerged in nearby soil, a stump, a neighboring yard or another piece of wood. UC IPM explains the dispersal flight and colony cycle.

The flight puts many reproductives into the open at once. Birds, lizards, ants and other insects consume them, while exposure, dehydration and the difficulty of finding a compatible mate and nest site eliminate many others. UC IPM reports that very few swarmers pair and establish a colony, and that very few colonies that are established ultimately reach maturity. The University of Georgia likewise describes establishment by swarming as having an extremely low success rate. No reliable universal percentage applies to every species or region.

The swarm is conspicuous, but it is not the damaging caste

Alates are built to fly and reproduce, not to excavate structural wood. Worker termites are responsible for feeding the colony and causing the wood damage associated with an infestation. Consequently, a cloud of winged termites can be alarming without being the part of the colony that is weakening a building. The concern is what the swarm reveals about a nearby or hidden colony, particularly when the insects emerge indoors or leave repeated piles of shed wings.

What happens after winged termites land?

The sequence varies by species, but subterranean termites follow a recognizable founding process.

  1. They stop flying and shed their wings. A male and female that remain together break off their wings at designated points. Wing piles are therefore evidence that alates landed and attempted to continue on foot; they are not discarded worker wings.
  2. They search for shelter. The pair looks for a protected, humid location such as soil, a crack, space beneath a rock or another piece of moist material. Texas A&M describes native subterranean termite pairs seeking cover under rocks or moist material after they lose their wings. Dry, exposed sites are poor choices because the termites rapidly lose water.
  3. They make a tiny nest chamber. UC IPM says a mated pair creates a small underground chamber, enters it and seals the entrance. Texas A&M similarly describes a very small nest made before mating. At this point the pair is not building a visible network of tunnels through a house; it is protecting itself while attempting to survive the founding stage.
  4. Mating occurs and the queen lays the first eggs. Mating generally follows soon after the chamber is sealed. The new queen initially lays only a few eggs, according to Texas A&M. For eastern subterranean termites, the University of Georgia says the first clutch of several dozen eggs is laid within days or weeks after pairing, followed by smaller numbers laid intermittently.
  5. The king remains with the queen. Unlike some social insects in which the male disappears after mating, the termite king stays in the founding chamber. He helps care for developing eggs and larvae. The queen and king tend the first young until enough workers exist to assume those jobs.
  6. Workers eventually take over colony labor. Once the first workers mature, they enlarge the nest, gather food, care for later broods and maintain the colony. This transition is why a successful founding pair can eventually produce a substantial colony, even though the initial chamber and first brood are very small.

That entire sequence is conditional. A pair may never find a mate, may dry out before sealing a chamber, may be eaten, or may fail to produce a viable first generation. Finding a shed-wing pair therefore does not prove that a new colony has succeeded, but it does show that reproductive termites were active in the area.

When do termites swarm?

There is no single “termite season” that applies everywhere. Species, latitude, local climate, colony condition, temperature, light and moisture all influence emergence. The dates below are regional examples rather than a calendar for every property.

Termite or setting Reported flight period and conditions How to interpret it
Reticulitermes in California Spring or fall; UC IPM notes flights can occur on clear afternoons after soaking rain. A California example; other species in the same state can follow different patterns.
Eastern subterranean termites in the eastern United States Commonly February–April; native subterranean termites generally swarm during the day. A broad regional pattern, not a guarantee for a particular county or year.
Dark southeastern subterranean termites Commonly April–June in the southeastern United States; daytime flights. Applies to this regional species group.
Light southeastern subterranean termites Commonly July–September in the southeastern United States; daytime flights. Later-season flights can still be normal for this group.
Formosan subterranean termites in the southeastern United States Often dusk to about midnight, April–July. Night flights in that region should not be assumed to represent all subterranean termites.

These eastern U.S. examples come from the University of Georgia’s termite biology guidance. UC IPM emphasizes that flight time changes with species and geography, while Texas A&M notes that heat, light and moisture affect emergence and that timing varies across Texas. A warm, damp spell can therefore produce flights outside the dates a neighbor or online calendar lists.

What does a swarm mean for your home?

Indoor swarmers deserve investigation

Swarmers emerging inside a building may indicate an established infestation in the structure, beneath a slab, in a crawl space or in soil immediately adjacent to it. A pile of shed wings on a windowsill, floor, light fixture or near a door is especially useful evidence because alates often abandon their wings soon after landing. Maryland Extension calls flights or piles of wings an early homeowner sign and notes that most alates that fly indoors eventually die from dehydration.

An indoor flight does not prove that the entire building is structurally compromised, and an outdoor flight does not prove the insects came from the building. NC State Extension says outdoor swarmers may originate in a yard, a neighboring yard or nearby woody material. Location, repeated sightings and other evidence determine how urgent an inspection is.

Look for the workers’ evidence

Because workers cause damage, inspect for signs associated with their activity rather than judging risk by the number of flying insects alone. Maryland Extension lists shelter tubes, soil packed into cracks, damaged or blistered wood and other structural changes. A crawl-space pier, foundation joint, plumbing penetration or buried wood in contact with soil can provide a route into a structure.

Property treatment history matters as well. A previously treated building can still have a new entry point, an untreated addition or a gap created by landscaping or plumbing work. An inspector should review the age and scope of any prior termite treatment instead of assuming that an old treatment covers every current condition.

Killing swarmers is not termite control

Vacuuming, sweeping or otherwise killing visible alates removes the immediate nuisance but does not remove workers, queens, kings or hidden nest sites. NC State specifically warns that eliminating swarmers does not address an infestation or existing activity. Treat the insects as evidence to preserve and identify, not as the whole problem.

How to tell termite swarmers from flying ants

Winged ants and termites can appear together during warm weather, and misidentification can lead to the wrong response. Compare all three features rather than relying on color alone.

Feature Termite swarmer Flying ant
Wings Four wings are approximately equal in length; they may be shed after landing. Forewings are larger than the hind wings.
Antennae Straight, bead-like antennae. Elbowed antennae.
Waist Broad body with no sharply pinched waist. Narrow, distinctly constricted waist.

These diagnostic differences are summarized by NC State Extension and the University of Maryland Extension. If the insect is damaged, the wings are missing or the view is poor, save a specimen or several wings and take a clear close-up photograph. A pest professional or extension specialist can confirm the identification.

What to do when you find a swarm

1. Preserve evidence before cleaning

Photograph the insects where they appeared and note the date, room or outdoor location, weather and time of day. Place an intact insect or shed wings in a clean, sealable vial or container if you can do so safely. Do not rely on a color description; wing shape, antennae and waist structure are more dependable.

2. Check the immediate area

Look around windows, doors, plumbing penetrations, baseboards, crawl-space access points and foundation joints. Outdoors, inspect stumps, firewood, landscape timbers, mulch edges and soil-to-wood contact. You are looking for additional swarmers, shelter tubes, packed soil, blistered wood or repeated wing piles. Avoid pulling apart structural members or disturbing a suspected nest before it can be documented.

3. Decide whether the location raises the risk

  • Indoor swarm or indoor wing pile: arrange a termite inspection, especially if there are other signs or the building has no recent documented inspection.
  • Outdoor swarm with no building signs: identify the insects and inspect nearby wood and soil; the source may be off the property.
  • Repeated flights: record each event and its location. Recurrence can help an inspector trace an entry route or nearby colony.
  • Uncertain identification: obtain confirmation before choosing a treatment, because flying ants and termites require different management decisions.

4. Ask for an inspection, not just a spray

A qualified local termite professional should examine accessible structural areas, moisture conditions, soil contact, visible tubes, damaged wood and prior treatment records. Ask what evidence supports the conclusion, whether activity is live or old, which areas were inaccessible and what follow-up monitoring is recommended. A swarm alone cannot establish how large or mature a colony is.

What a swarm does—and does not—tell you

A swarm tells you that reproductive termites reached the area and attempted to disperse. It does not identify the species by itself, prove that a colony has been founded, measure the size of a hidden colony or show that structural damage is occurring at that moment. Species-level identification, the exact emergence point and corroborating worker signs provide the useful context.

The same caution applies to timing. A daytime flight is common for several native subterranean termites, while Formosan termites in parts of the southeastern United States may fly after dusk. A flight after rain is documented for some California Reticulitermes, but moisture, heat and light interact differently among species and regions. Interpreting the event requires geography and biology together, not a universal date or hour.

Why most new colonies fail

Founding a termite colony is an unusually vulnerable life stage. The pair must survive open flight, locate one another, avoid predators, retain enough moisture, seal a suitable chamber, produce viable eggs and care for the first larvae before workers exist. Predators can remove large numbers during the flight, and a pair that lands in dry soil, exposed wood or an unsuitable cavity may never establish. Even a pair that produces its first workers can fail before the colony reaches maturity. That is why a dramatic swarm can be biologically important without automatically becoming a mature infestation.

When swarmers appear indoors, however, the safest interpretation is practical rather than statistical: treat the event as a reason to investigate the property. Early confirmation distinguishes an outdoor event from termites emerging through the building and identifies conditions that can be corrected before worker activity causes further damage.
