Why Windows Keeps Switching Your Default Browser Back to Edge

Windows is not always changing the system-wide browser setting when Microsoft Edge opens. The result depends on where you clicked: an ordinary web link follows Windows’ default-app association, while Outlook, Teams, Windows Search, widgets and some Edge-dependent features can use their own rules. Windows 10 and Windows 11 S mode also require Edge as the default browser.

Start by identifying the link source, then check the Windows default-app setting, individual protocol associations, S mode and the affected app’s preference. Microsoft documents these as separate controls; an Edge update is not documented as a universal cause of browser defaults being reset.

What “switching back to Edge” can mean

There are three different behaviors that look identical at first glance:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
What you click Which setting normally controls it What Edge opening tells you
A link in a document, another browser or a general Windows app The Windows default for web protocols and related link types The system association may be Edge, or one protocol may still be associated with Edge.
A link in Outlook or a Teams chat The app’s link-handling choice, which can be separate from Windows’ default Outlook or Teams can deliberately open Edge without replacing your Windows default. Microsoft documents this distinction.
A result in Windows Search, a widget or an Edge-dependent Windows feature The feature’s built-in integration Edge opening is expected for some of these entry points and does not prove that your ordinary browser default changed. See Microsoft’s list of apps and widgets that depend on Edge.
A PC running Windows 10 or Windows 11 in S mode The S mode platform restriction Microsoft says Edge is always the default browser in S mode. The S mode FAQ explains the rule.

The fastest diagnosis is therefore not “Which browser did I select?” but “Which application or Windows feature launched this particular link?”

Identify the link source before changing settings

Test an ordinary web link

Open a text document or an unrelated application that contains a normal https:// link and click it. If that link opens your chosen browser but an Outlook message opens Edge, Windows’ system default is probably working and the difference is app-specific. If every ordinary link opens Edge, continue with the default-app checks below.

Test more than one protocol

Web pages generally use HTTP or HTTPS, but Windows also maintains associations for file and link types. A browser can be the preferred handler for one association while Edge remains selected for another. Test both an http:// and an https:// link when possible, and note whether local web files or another link type behave differently.

Separate Outlook and Teams from Windows

Microsoft states that Outlook and Teams may open links in Edge even when another browser is the Windows default. That behavior is controlled separately, so changing Windows’ default does not necessarily change what those apps do. If only messages or chats are affected, go directly to the apps’ link-handling settings rather than repeatedly resetting the browser in Windows.

Recognize Search, widgets and integrated features

Windows Search web results and some widgets use Edge-linked components. If Edge appears only after a search in the taskbar or from a Windows widget, that is an entry-point rule, not evidence that a normal web-link association was overwritten. Microsoft describes these integrations in its support guidance on Edge-dependent apps and widgets.

Set the Windows default browser again

Windows 11

Use Microsoft’s current path, keeping in mind that labels can vary slightly by Windows release:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps, then Default apps.
  3. Find and select the browser you want to use.
  4. Choose Set default.

Microsoft gives this flow in its default-browser instructions. After selecting Set default, close Settings and test a link launched from outside the browser itself. Testing from another app matters because opening a link inside a browser does not test Windows’ external association.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Apps, then Default apps.
  3. Locate Web browser.
  4. Select the current browser and choose your preferred browser from the list.

The wording and layout can change with Windows updates, but Microsoft’s documented Windows 10 route is Settings > Apps > Default apps > Web browser. If the selected browser remains shown after you leave Settings, Windows has retained the system-level choice; an Edge launch from one particular app must then be investigated separately.

Repair an individual association instead of changing everything

Windows supports defaults by both application and file or link type. Microsoft’s Change Default Apps in Windows guidance explains that you can select an app or choose a specific file type or link type.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Default apps.
  2. Search for the file type or protocol that is misbehaving, such as HTTP or HTTPS, if your release presents associations that way.
  3. Select the current handler.
  4. Choose your preferred browser and confirm the change.
  5. Repeat for any other affected association, then test each link type separately.

This targeted approach is important when ordinary HTTPS links open correctly but a particular protocol, file extension or application still invokes Edge. Do not infer that the whole default changed from one failing association.

Stop Outlook or Teams from choosing Edge for links

Outlook and Teams can have a link-opening preference independent of the Windows default. If links from those apps are the only ones that open Edge, open the relevant app’s settings and look for its browser or link-handling option. Choose the option that uses your system default or your preferred browser, if that choice is offered by your edition and app version.

The exact menu names differ between Outlook editions and Teams releases, so use the app’s own Settings search for terms such as links, browser or open links. The key diagnostic is scope: changing this preference affects links launched by that app, while the Windows Default apps page affects system associations. Microsoft’s explanation of this split is at Web links from Outlook emails and Teams chats open in Microsoft Edge.

Check whether the PC is in S mode

Windows 10 and Windows 11 S mode impose a platform restriction. Microsoft’s official wording is: “When you’re using Windows 11 in S mode, Microsoft Edge is always the default web browser, and Bing is the default search engine.” The same support page covers Windows 10 S mode.

To check, open Settings > System > About and inspect the Windows edition, or search Settings for “S mode.” If S mode is active, repeatedly selecting another browser will not provide a lasting replacement because Edge is required as the default under Microsoft’s documented rules.

Leaving S mode

Microsoft’s documented route is to switch out of S mode through the Microsoft Store. Before doing so, understand the trade-off: Microsoft says leaving S mode cannot be reversed. Once the device is switched out, it is no longer in S mode, and you can then set another browser through the normal Default apps page. Do not leave S mode merely to fix an Outlook or Windows Search behavior that would remain app-specific afterward.

Why Windows Search can still open Edge

Windows Search web results are a special case. Search is a Windows feature rather than a generic link launcher, and Microsoft lists Search and other Windows experiences among the features that depend on Edge components. As a result, choosing another browser for ordinary web links does not guarantee that a Search result will open in that browser.

The same qualification applies to certain widgets and integrated experiences. If Edge launches only from a Search result, widget card or another named Windows feature, compare that behavior with a test link from a document. A difference between the two is expected evidence of separate entry-point handling, not proof that Windows silently replaced your browser choice. Microsoft’s current list is available at Apps and widgets that depend on Microsoft Edge.

Did an Edge or Windows update reset the browser?

Edge is integrated with Windows and receives updates through its installer or through Windows updates. Microsoft provides separate documentation for Edge update settings and explains why the browser is not normally removable in Why can’t I uninstall Microsoft Edge?.

Those pages establish Edge’s integration and update mechanisms, but they do not establish that an Edge update universally resets every user’s chosen browser. If the issue began after an update, record that timing as useful evidence without treating it as the cause. Check whether the selected browser is still displayed in Default apps, whether only one app is affected, and whether the device is in S mode.

An update-related theory becomes more credible on a particular PC only if the association actually changed and the behavior can be reproduced outside a single integrated feature. Without that device-specific evidence, use the documented association and app-preference checks rather than assuming every update caused the switch.

A complete troubleshooting sequence

  1. Write down the source. Note whether Edge opened from an ordinary document link, Outlook, Teams, Windows Search, a widget or one specific application.
  2. Check the Windows default. In Windows 11 use Settings > Apps > Default apps, select the preferred browser and choose Set default. In Windows 10 check Settings > Apps > Default apps > Web browser.
  3. Verify persistence. Leave Settings, reopen it and confirm the preferred browser is still shown. Then test an external HTTP or HTTPS link.
  4. Inspect individual associations. If only certain links fail, use the Default apps page to inspect and change the affected protocol or link type instead of changing unrelated defaults.
  5. Check S mode. Confirm the Windows edition. If S mode is enabled, explain the permanent consequence before considering the Microsoft Store process for leaving it.
  6. Check the originating app. For Outlook or Teams, find the app’s link-opening preference. For Search and widgets, treat Edge launching as an integrated-feature behavior.
  7. Document the device state. Record Windows 10 or 11, edition, version, S mode status, the affected source and protocols, and whether the choice survives a restart. These details distinguish a system association problem from an app rule.

When the symptom needs deeper support

Escalate the issue after the basic checks if the preferred browser is visibly selected for the relevant association, the PC is not in S mode, and ordinary links from several unrelated applications still open Edge. At that point, capture the exact protocol or file type, the application that launched it, the Windows edition and version, and whether the setting changes back immediately or only after a restart. This information is more useful than simply reporting that “Windows switched browsers.”

Also distinguish a setting that fails to save from a setting that saves correctly but is ignored by one feature. The first points toward an association or edition restriction; the second points toward an app-specific or Edge-integrated entry point. Keeping those scopes separate prevents unnecessary changes to the rest of your Windows defaults.
